Il viale delle foglie che cantano

.

Fra la fitta nebbia e l’albeggiar

d’una fredda mattina autunnale

nelle inquiete penombre

di un viale d’alberi secolari

s’ode un fil di voce lamentare e

lunghi pianti singhiozzare.

A piedi nudi e passo incerto

coperta da un lercio

e fiorito abitino…

vaga, quasi danzando,

da sola una minuta bambina

fra le fredde lastre del viale.

Non lontan da lei

c’è un “angelo custode”

che,…fra le umide panchine e

le cadute foglie rinsecchite,

acquattato, fa capolino a vegliar

l’incerto volteggiar

e solitario vagar

di quell’anima solitaria.

Tutt’un tratto si ferma e

immobile rimane,

abbandonate e dritte

le sue esili braccia al corpicino

col capo chino a guardar

dei suoi piedini scalzi

le dita giocherellare fra

le foglie secche scricchiolare.

Pian pianino mi avvicino e…

fermo li rimane,

quell”angelo custode”

rimango solo io in quel freddo e lugubre viale.

The avenue of singing leaves

.

Between the thick fog and the dawn

of a cold autumn morning

in the restless shadows

of an avenue of centuries-old trees

you can hear a thread of a voice lamenting

and long sobbing cries.

Barefoot and with an uncertain step

covered by a dirty

and flowery dress…

a tiny little girl wanders, almost dancing,

alone

among the cold flagstones of the avenue.

Not far from her

there is a “guardian angel”

who,…between the damp benches and

the fallen dried leaves,

crouching, peeps out to watch

over the uncertain whirling

and solitary wandering

of that solitary soul.

Suddenly she stops and

remains still,

her slender arms stretched out and straight

her head bowed to watch

her bare feet

her fingers playing among

the dry leaves crackling.

I slowly approach her and...

she remains still there,

that "guardian angel"

scrutinizes me but lets me pass.

I address her but...

smiling and with a soft voice

she says to me: SSsss....can you hear them?, they are talking to me,

the leaves of the avenue are singing

they are my enchanted leaves.

I remain stunned and moved

frightened I turn towards...

a loud rustling of leaves swept by the wind

looking for someone, a relative

a mother who can explain to me.

But suddenly the silence becomes deathly

there is no one left, everything has vanished,

even that “guardian angel” has flown

I am the only one left in that cold and gloomy avenue.

Canto Della Terra - Andrea Bocelli

It is only mid-June and in going over photos already taken this month I am overwhelmed by the volume and the task of deciding which I might upload. This happens every spring, perhaps explained by this image....a simple look at a feature of a type found throughout the woodlands. Every walk or venture out on the lake yields endless photo ops and by the time I get back, I find I have inevitably taken between 50-100 shots. I probably have many years of accumulation which I have never properly looked at because the next day adds to the volume.

This is the time of year when the green is stunning in its perfection. Even using the magnifier, which I encourage, I challenge you to wander the woods and try to spot even a touch of brown on any of the fresh and perfect growth. And with blue skies peeking through the canopy, all one can do is breathe deep and be grateful.

As an aside, I was happy to see Flickr reactivated the note function lost for no apparent reason in all the changes a few years ago. While I never abused it, it could be useful in a number of ways. For those unfamiliar with it or, like me, couldn't figure out to use it now, or don't want to use it or have it used on their images, here's the tutorial: www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157668990488722/

Pocket magnifier - Essential for the masses of small print which seems to multiply with age

Dance fly - Empis tessellata.

I was scanning the philadelphus aureus through my magnifier on the back of the screen hoping to find some pleasing contrast when this chap landed right where I was pointed, I quickly took a shot in case he disappeared which is just as well because he did, just there for an instant - luckily it was in decent focus and the sun at a nice angle, bright and from my right making all the pollen on him sparkle enough to give sleepless nights. Chuckle.

Unless my wife finds them for me this is the only way I ever catch flies and other insects, they are either there already on the flower when I go to it, or they land when I am in the process. Bees and buzzers are a bit different as I can sort of track them with my ears

Pittosporum Japonica Gold Star

Tiny, beautifully scented little flowers with a perfume which seems to get stronger when the sun has gone down. I guess in its native environment these shrubs would grow into small trees, but here they are not natively hardy and have to be over wintered with care. This is a small shrub in a pot and the flowers are so small and tucked away my wife has to locate them for me, and even then through my 20x magnifier I still can't find them so she had to keep her finger right next to this one!

Taken at almost max magnification, then in apsc mode for another 50%, and with a crop.

The sky was darkening and I wanted to take a photo of the mountains under the lowering cloud. I was trying to locate them through my 20x magnifier on the back of the LCD screen when the sun popped its head out and dramatically lit up this cloud, so I decided to photograph that instead. I had no idea I had caught the tops of the mountains at all and even wehn I uploaded to the big screen at home it was quite some time before I realised. Chuckle. Rather glad I did though for as you can see there are plenty of tiny sheep happily grazing over there.....

Non provo più dolore

gelidi si fanno i miei pensieri.

Silenziosi e angoscianti

there, where every gesture of mine is born

every thought of mine

my voice.

I feel no more pain

the evil shadows return,

dark darkness envelops me

my thoughts grow cold.

Silent and anguished

2" X 3"

When i was grovelling in the woods over a week ago for my first Bluebell shot of the season I have to admit age and some limitations didn't help but I do love vintage bokeh though was finding it extra difficult.. Jonathan bought this lens for my birthday which incidentally is today, because I had looked at many reviews and thought the auto focus might help in this new lens, length 135mm f/1.8.. It was ordered one day and delivered the next and in time for me to test that is was fine. So the other day when i went the first of two short walks. I was able with the Sony A7RM3 to auto focus on the flower I wished, I then had the facility to override the auto focus using manual focus DMF in the camera settings and also bought up the focus magnifier to tweak where I wanted it sharp. It definitely is not vintage but I personally still loved the painterly bokeh I was able to get but with a little help initially from the auto focus ability of the lens. The new lens is a Samyang 135mm f1.8 and I will hopefully get some portrait shots too which is one of its main strengths but I don’t use any lens conventionally tbh….

Built 1860 on Sainte Catherine in Montreal. This is my favourite church in Montreal. It takes my breath away every time I see it.<3 View it large and use the magnifier, see every gargoyle and every stone.

There’s a story behind this one so I decided to put it up.

For almost 4 years now old Magoo has been trying to capture one of the red kite birds that leisurely circle over our house on a regular basis and he’s failed miserably! Hundreds and hundreds of attempts and not a single one deserving of putting up. Four years. Sigh. Chuckle.

These fighter jets on the other hand, occasionally pass over and nothing about them is leisurely, you hear them coming at a terrific rate of knots , they are on you with a roar and then whoosh - gone. I’ve never had a camera with me when they do - or not with the right lens anyhow. But on this day I did have and was in a good place in the garden.

I heard it coming, no time to lift my 20x magnifier, no time to think or check aperture or exposure, I just turned towards the noise and then it was on me, unseen but without thinking I guessed at height and direction and spun around to get ahead of it, paused an instant and then hit the shutter button - one shot. No time to see if I had been unbelievably lucky for there was another one coming. I quickly turned towards it, made the same guess, spun ahead, paused and fired! Again, one shot.

I lifted up my 20x magnifier to take a look and see what if anything I had - the shots were taken so I knew I had clouds but I was beyond flabbergasted to discover I had caught the very fast moving jet not once, but twice. Honestly, I stood there stunned, it seemed….insane. It still does. Of course I didn’t know if they were sharp or blurred I can never tell even with the 20x but as you can see it was sharp, they both were.

Two shots, two hits on the lightening fast jet I think earns Magoo the title of ‘Topgun’ on this occasion at least, whilst my attempts at the slow moving kites earn me an empty water pistol award. Hopefully, I’ll be successful one day but until then these two photos give me cause for optimism and still raise a bemused and amazed smile and quite a bit of head scratching:^)

My dad was an ophthalmology professor and was the director of the optics course for the eye surgeons in training at Washington, DC. He always wanted to teach me about the practical applications of optics; this meant cameras, microscopes, telescopes, harnessing the Sun with magnifying glasses - on and on. One of our favorites was the Arthur Seibert Emoscop. He had ordered one for both of us and we played together with these for hours on end. He was not much for playing catch or soccer, but we had a lot of quality time examining the unseen world. He often carried a Minox subminiature spy camera with him so many of my childhood photos were on microfilm 😂.

The Emoscop came in very handy for reviewing these Minox negatives!

Seibert Emoscop made in Wetzlar, Germany 1950s - 60s

"The three parts are combined to give a telescope of 2.5x, magnifications of 5x, 10x,15x and a microscope of 25x and 30x.

The top and middle pieces (see photograph above) are combined to give an adjustable 2.5x telescope.

The middle piece is a 5x magnifier.

The bottom piece (far right) is a 10x magnifier.

Middle and bottom combine to give 15x magnification.

All three combine to give 25x microscope. By pulling the ocular out of the objective tube magnifications between 25x and 30x can be obtained. The ocular is itself a x5 magnifier when viewed through the tube.

When used as a microscope the working distance is 24mm from the object."

°°°°°°°°°°°

Very wide aperture lenses, often called “bokeh masters”, are the stuff of dreams. Ultra-bright, they allow you to work in low light, create a very shallow depth of field and magnify a subject by developing a very pronounced front-to-back blur.

I made use of another feather, thank you Mr Seagull.

I used a water sprayer to put a fine mist onto the feather and used the crop 1.6 setting on the R5 which acts just like an APSC sensor. Went out for sunrise in the mist this morning oh was it good pics to come in due course .

Employed here is Klaus Opdenkelder's patented 'Swing-the-camera-on-the-tripod-to-my-Lou-my-darling' method. If interested, another example of this highly sought after technique can be found in the first comment box below.

Detailed viewing with the magnifier is kinda cool, if that's your sorta thing.

Every May, just outside my kitchen window where I sometimes sit at my laptop, there appear a colony of these giant red poppies that flower for perhaps 5 or 6 weeks. They are enormous and their vibrant reds dominate their less extravagant neighbours. Those bright reds tug at me incessantly, until I inevitably succumb to their charms and pick up my camera to spend some time with them. How many pictures I've taken of them this year I do not know. Lots. Most shots are deleted within 5 minutes of being taken but one or two demand to be seen by a wider audience. This one definitely fits that bill!

Umm... this is getting a little weird. First, I want to say that, Richard and I have not pre-alerted each other to any forthKcoming images or King Crimson song seleKctions, with the exception of the third set and in that partiKcular case, even though he forewarned me that he was going to use Schizoid Man, I had already decided I would use In The Court... from the same album. However, in wanting to somewhat match his song selection, I moved my fourth image up to third, consequently moving this one to fourth. I have been putting the link to his entries last in the narrative but, it might be appropriate for me to stick it here:

Here is a link to Richard's corresponding fourth entry:

The King Crimson Series: Fracture

Both images with a PANO-Vision sabotaged building... not so unusual for him, of course but, nothing I had come close to in the three previous entries. Gets stranger though... song choice from the young lad - Fracture from the Starless and Bible Black album! I have been putting the link to my musiKcal choice a little later in the narrative but, it might be appropriate for me to stick it here:

'Frakctured' - King Crimson

My song for this was already picked from the construKction of light album. Okay, so maybe not earthshatteringly strange or eerie but, a rather quirky sort of synergy going on that makes one wonder, I would think. S'pose though, that's if one goes in to wondering about these type of things at all, otherwise it's probably just a coincidence and leave it at that. Hmm... maybe? Still one more entry to go.

With mountains of colours to choose from, where to next?

I don’t suppose the old Helios lens that I used to shoot this with was aimed particularly at the macro photographer but with a magnifying lens attached to the front of it it ain’t half bad. It manages to retain that legendary bokeh that the Helios 44 lenses are famous for while still doing a passable job in the sharpness department.

This was actually not a shot that I thought I'd be keeping as I was only shooting these little flowers as a test shot to see how a vintage lens I was trying out was rendering on my Sony digital camera. But the more I looked at it the more I personally liked it.

Groovy tune that just might getcha up off your rump and pump out the jams: 'That Ain't Classy' - Classified.

Might I be so bold as to suggest the magnifier for this... some rather cool stuff in the details, if that's your sort of thing.

Sometimes, it's just so hard to find the PNG image you downloaded a while ago and only gave it a vague label. In this case, this is the one I used however, mine was much more varied in colour so, perhaps there is another version out there, or I edited it with more colours whilst having a couple of beers and forgot I did so: PNGWING.
