100 Strangers Project
I was recently visiting with a couple friends and we stopped at Saint Jo, Texas, for lunch. Along the square we passed by a shop teaching bootmaking and that is how I met Carl. You see, he is a master bootmaker and has won all kinds of awards for his craft.
We struck up a conversation and it was then that he invited us into the bootshop to watch a class making boots, and also met another master bootmaker named Mike. Carl then invited us across the square to his bootshop.
Bootmaking is still alive and well in Texas and the boots he has made are nothing short of incredible. We stood in the shop with taxidermy on the walls and a myriad of bootmaking supplies and equipment all around and he was so informative and showed us around his shop. Now this is what I call Texas hospitality at it's best!
From his website I learned...
"Carl is probably best known for his dress cowboy boots which can include multiple rows of intricate stitching, fancy inlays, decorative collars, beading, candy-stripe piping, filigree work, carving, and hand-tooling. He works with all types of leather including buffalo, bull, kangaroo, ostrich, alligator, stingray, French Calf, lizard, bullfrog, and more. Customers choose whatever leathers, colors, heel height, and toe styles they desire. Just like his father’s, grandfather’s, and Mr. Humphries’ boots, Carl’s boots are still made tough enough to meet the demands of working cowboys, yet his boots are right at home in urban environments too."
"He has won more than 20 bootmaking awards including multiple wins in the Master’s Division along with the Academy of Western Artists “Will Rogers” award for the 2011 Boot Maker of the Year. "

I had taken several photos of Carl with the boots he has made but I chose this photo simply because the quality of the photo was better.
Thank you Carl for being so kind to three strangers and sharing your talent with us! We so much appreciated it and our day in Saint Jo was certainly a highlight of our visit!
