This shot was taken on 12th December 2013 and shows the last Marigold in my wife's garden beset by dew and still finding solace in the weakest rays of winter sunshine.

What am I doing instead of sleeping when I'm super tired? Taking macro photos! So I got a cheap $9 extension tube to achieve (relatively) absurd macro and felt compelled to do something with it before I would let myself sleep. So cliche watch macro is a go! Talk about razor-thin depth of field. Dusty too.
Lighting info: Turns out lighting a macro shot with less than a couple inches of working distance is non-trivial. But an SB-600 with LumiQuest Softbox III to the left, and a random nearby black sock immediately to the left of the subject to flag the light and stop the terrible glare I was getting without it worked out. Triggered via Cactus V4.
My new rig has got four main improvements compared to my old one :
- a steel plate which perfectly fits the Duaflex,
- another plate to fix a tripod,
- a stabilisator for the lens,
- a ring for the neck strap.
And it's not so heavy…

mutant mascara
Not much time today to grab a shot, so went for something I use everyday. I seem to collect mascara, always looking for the magical product that will give me a full set of fluttering lashes! ;0)
Anyway, seeing this close up kind of made me think "I actually put this gloop on my eyes!?!?" Oh, and it is black mascara - the wand is pink!!

Allergies are hitting me hard this season, so I'm taking mom's advice and eating garlic on bread. Raw garlic, the only way to eat it. It's not that bad actually.

The old saying goes, "If you're ever lost in the woods look for the side of the tree with moss on it beacause that's north."
In the Northwest we say, "If you're lost in the woods look to see if the trees have moss on all sides. If so at least you're still in the Northwest!"

Working with muscadines for the first time is a little different than other berries or fruits with which I've baked...I never thought I'd say the words "the dough to fruit ratio in my cobbler is too high!" but I guess there's a first time for everything!
I actually baked a second cobbler that same night, adjusting things, and it came out better. Still, more experiments with this "new-to-me" fruit seem to be in order...
