When Rollei makes a compact 35mm camera they do it right, proven in the Rollei 35 lineup. Now, mine is a later Singapore model, but it still shines. However, that doesn't mean the camera is without its faults, it's incredibly frustrating to load, rewind, and the scale focus doesn't help. But when it does work, it's magic.

Taking the middle of the road, RPX 100 is a fantastic film if you need more speed that RPX 25 and more contrast than RPX 400. Again a successor to the legendary APX 100 stock.

As many who know me know, I have a bit of an issue getting the results I like out of Retro 80s, at least until I souped in Microphen, there's a certain ethereal look about the images, the Yellow Filter probably helped.

A roll of 127 size roll film, with a standard 135 cassette to show the size. It's a tiny bit longer than the 35 mm cassette (the film itself is 46 mm wide), and quite a bit slimmer. Incidentally, '127' is a completely arbitrary code for this size; nothing about a 127 film measures 127 mm, or 27 mm, or anything like that. The Efke film shown here is good stuff. You can get several other kinds sold under the Rollei brand. I get mine mail order from Germany (macodirect.de) - worth it if you're buying enough. In the UK, I can recommend Silverprint or Ag Photographic.

To load the roll, you have to cut or tear the paper tape around the roll (the green bit here; not the backing paper that covers the whole width of the roll). That frees the end of the backing paper. Then, taking care not to let the roll unwind and expose the film, put the roll in the supply side of the camera (the side without the winding knob). You also need an empty spool in the camera, in the side with the knob. Pass the tapered end of the paper across to the mpty spool, and tuck it through the slot in the spool. Wind enough paper onto the spool that it's secure, then close the camera back and wind on until you see first some dots, then the number '1' in the red window (it takes quite a bit of winding). Then it's ready to take your first picture. Then wind to frame '2', etc. You get eight 4x6 cm, twelve 4x4 cm, or sixteen 3x4 cm pictures, depending which camera you have. If you're lucky enough to have one of the better 4x4 TLR cameras, the winding on may be a tiny bit different; with my Yashica 44LM, you only have to wind on the frame 1, then press a button on the side of the camera, and you don't need the red window for the rest of the roll.

[An aside, on using 35 mm film: I have heard of people loading 35 mm into a 127 camera. A cassette won't fit into any of my 127 cameras that I've tried; it does in some 120 size cameras. I know some people cut the film out of the cassette, cut it to length, and roll it up with an old 127 backing paper. In a Brownie 127, where the film is supposed to follow a curved path, the 35 mm film might go straight across, and so be in the wrong place; the pictures may be blurred (but I've seen some good ones; maybe the stiffness of 35 mm film makes it follow the curve. In other 127 cameras, with a flat film path, the edges of the 35 mm film may curl away from the pressure plate, and so be blurred there, but the blur will be among the film perforations anyway. I've never done this, but I've seen good pictures like this in the 127 format group pool.]

Honestly, I didn't have much hope for this film, with limited information online and not seeing any examples, I was expecting a grain fest, don't ask me why it's what my gut said. However, I was instead treated with a rich film with amazing tonality decent grain sharpness. An excellent first showing.

The parish was reportedly established in 1861 and had its own church in 1908, although evidence of baptismal records date back to at least to February 4, 1858 upon the baptism of John Dogerty [Dougherty], son of Bernard Dogerty [Dougherty] and his wife Mary Ann McConnell. The Louisbourg Grenadiers was a temporary unit of grenadiers formed by General James Wolfe in 1759 to serve with British Army forces in the Quebec campaign of the Seven Years' War. Grenadiers from the 22nd, 40th, and 45th regiments were brought together by Wolfe at the Fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia in preparation for action along the St. Lawrence River. The unit was involved in numerous battles during the months-long prelude to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, including the ill-fated Battle of Beauport on July 31, 1759. After Quebec City's capture, the Grenadiers went on to be involved in the fall of Montreal the next year.

For an upcoming episode John provided the gang with some fourth-party M42 lenses to test out to see how well they actually worked. I'm rather impressed at how well the lens I ended up with, the Sun Auto 85-210mm f/4.8 turned out. I'm sure it would do better in a camera that could actually stop it down and I ended up shooting this wide open the whole time because Zenit E. Over all there's little to no fall off on the corners, a bit of flare if I wasn't careful. But lovely sharp lens.
