Sir Richard Arkwright founded Masson Mills at Matlock Bath in 1769 to showcase automated cotton spinning using his new patented Water Looms. It made him a very rich man and the business prospered and grew. The mill finally stopped production in the early 1990s - one of the last UK cotton mills.
Large parts have been preserved intact and it's almost as if the workforce had just walked out of the shop - odd small items and paperwork left lying around the machines. It's also untidy and not terribly clean; which is just great really. It certainly conveys the look, sounds, smell and feel of a working cotton mill.
When the Lancashire and Yorkshire looms are running the clatter makes polite conversation impossible, but that's just two looms - the main weaving floors here could run 1000 of these simultaneously!
The Museum has an excellent little cafe too and very nice knowledgeable staff. It is still rather unknown on the Peak District tourist trail, but if you like industrial history, steam engines or machinery in general, this is the place for you!

This was installed in 1988, and was designed by Richard Ponzi, Ray Grimm, Jere Grimm, and Roger Sheppard. Every day at noon it is updated (with music, lights, and mist) to indicate what the next day's weather will be with a symbol at the top of the globe. The three symbols are a silver blue heron (which is shown here and which is the city bird of Portland) indicating changing weather, Helia the sun goddess which indicates sunny weather, and a copper dragon which indicates approaching storms. The Weather Machine also indicates the temperature and air quality for the area.

Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.
Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.
In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.
This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.
This Maker Art class was taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. We met every week for 12 workshops of 90 minutes each, Thursdays at 3:30pm, from January 5 to March 30, 2017. Our teachers are part of the Tam Makers learning community and we prepared materials for this project in our state-of-the-art makerspace at the nearby Tam High School.
