Rehearsal for the Green Machine gig at the Celtic Connections festival - taken at Berkeley Rehearsal Studios in Glasgow. This was the only opportunity to rehearse with the full band before the concert.Slightly disconcerting to have notes, rests, whole sequences of music changed at the last minute - even more disconcerting when this happened at the soundcheck on the night with half an hour left before the concert started!!
Still, in the end it went very well and seemed to have been well received. The Scotsman newspaper review of the gig talked about a tsunami of sound - now given that tsunamis are pretty destructive things, I'm not sure that was entirely complimentary!! The music is very interesting and enoyable to play though - a mixture of folk, jazz, heavy metal, sampling, dance... or as Martin Green himself describes it: "The Sound of a powerful yet beautiful hangover resulting from a night out dancing with Frank Zappa and Astor Piazzolla, each with a girl on their arm and Duke Ellington buying chasers at the bar…. "

From Wikipedia:
"In a Wimshurst machine, the two insulated disks and their metal sectors rotate in opposite directions passing the crossed metal neutralizer bars and their brushes. An imbalance of charges is induced, amplified, and collected by two pairs of metal combs with points placed near the surfaces of each disk. These collectors are mounted on insulating supports and connected to the output terminals. The positive feedback increases the accumulating charges exponentially until the dielectric breakdown voltage of the air is reached and a spark jumps across the gap.
The machine is self-starting, meaning that external electrical energy is not required to create the initial charge. However, it does require mechanical power to turn the disks against the electric field, and it is this energy that the machine converts into electric power. The output of the Wimshurst machine is essentially a constant current that is proportional to the area covered by the metal sectors and to the rotation speed. The insulation and the size of the machine determine the maximum output voltage that can be reached. The accumulated spark energy can be increased by adding a pair of Leyden jars, an early type of capacitor suitable for high voltages, with the jars’ inner plates independently connected to each of the output terminals and the jars’ outer plates interconnected. A typical Wimshurst machine can produce sparks that are about a third of the disk's diameter in length and several tens of microamperes."

The finished pendant, showing the glass bottle stopper in place. The stopper was a pain to set as it broke on me the first time I tried and the section into which a groove had been cut sheared off completely. Fortunately, there was enough material left to cut another groove. The shorter stopper looks better, but that is pure luck!

The Dream Machine is a factory built biplane designed and first built by Curtis Pitts over fifty years ago. This biplane design was inspired and modeled after the very first airplane designs, including two wings, fly wires and fabric covering. This design can be seen in aerobatic competitions today as well as airshows all over the world. The biplane design captures the true romance of what airshows are all about.
The Dream Machine can be changed from one seat to two seat configuration by swapping the canopies. The transformation can be made rather quickly, allowing for more versatility for both airshow performances and media rides. The single place canopy improves the performance by reducing drag and increasing the acceleration. Aside from a handheld GPS used for cross country flights, the instruments are your basic airspeed, altitude and engine monitoring gauges. The overall design and mission of this beautiful machine is purely stick and rudder skydancing.
