I spotted this tree covered in moss in the woods close to Coombe Hill at the start of my walk this morning.

Moss Force, a 100m (328ft) high waterfall, as seen from the top of the fall. The fells across the valley are those of Grasmoor. Although an easy hike from the road, it doesn't seem to be particularly popular, which means it is very peaceful.

The Moss-backed Tanager is typical chunky-bodied Bangsia tanager with a comparatively large-looking head, which is violet-blue, contrasting with the largely dull green body plumage, and the yellow center to the upper breast. It is a group-living bird, which is found just as frequently apart from other species as within mixed-species flocks. Another unusual behavior of the Moss-backed Tanager is the propensity for individuals to perch high on an exposed perch in a clearing or above the forest canopy. The species is distributed from west-central Colombia to northwest Ecuador, and ranges to elevations around 2100 m in wet and mossy cloud forests.

I chose the outside of the Moss Cottage for Fence Friday. Named for the Spanish Moss in the lush trees. Built in 1896 for William Struther's and later owned by the Macy family for 20 years. His neighbors on Millionaires Village were the Morgan's, Rockefeller's, Goodyear and the Vanderbilt's. Jekyll Island, GA.

Happy Fence Friday!

Eastbound coal loads descend Alleghany grade at Moss Run, VA, behind five month old CSXT 31. I had forgotten how nice the ACs looked when they were new.

We were out for a drive and ended up driving past the Moss Vale showground. We saw the show jumping event set up so we went in for a look. It was interesting to watch. I think it was actually part of the Moss Vale show.

Moss covered limbs deep in the forest seemed to be trying to tell me something.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!

As found. No additional saturation.

Late afternoon light hits a autumn mountainside along Deer Creek in the southern Sierra Nevada. The boulder sits alongside the Deer Creek Mill road in the Sierra National Forest in Tulare County, California. The area lies in Giant Sequoia National Monument which is administered by the National Forest.

The Moss Landing public marina and the natural gas powered electricity generation plant located in Moss Landing, CA at the midpoint of Monterey Bay. Its large stacks are landmarks, visible throughout the Monterey Bay Area. The plant is owned and operated by Houston-based Dynegy and currently has a generation capacity of 1020 MW (net) from its two combined cycle generation units.[3] It was once the largest power plant in the state of California, with a generation capacity of 2560 MW, before its two large supercritical steam units were taken offline. It is to be the site of a new battery storage power station for grid battery storage of over 567MW / 2,270MWh of power, potentially the world's largest when completed.

Mosses and lychen on a piece of bark which I found encased in ice while hiking. Once home I put the bark on top of pebbles in a glass container and filled it with water. It has been some four days since I did this and the mosses are turning a lighter green and growing ever so slightly every day.

The green (what we usually expect if someone says, "look at that moss,") is the gametophyte phase of this moss. The plants make eggs, and sperm, that fertilizes the egg. Then, if all goes well, a non-green structure, the sporophyte, grows from the fertilized egg. Each sporophyte has a capsule on its end, and spores are grown there, then released, and washed or blown to another occasion.

This entire assembly was (and most likely still is) growing on a downed tree trunk.
