The Mistletoe Bird is the only Australian species in the Flowerpecker family. It is found throughout Australia and is highly adapted to its diet of mistletoe berries. It lacks the muscular gizzard (food-grinding organ) of other birds, instead having a simple digestive system through which the berries pass quickly, digesting the fleshy outer parts and excreting the sticky seeds onto branches. The seed can then germinate quickly into a new plant. In this way, the Mistletoebird ensures a constant supply of its main food. It will also catch insects, mainly to provide food for its young.

It is always exciting to see a "new" bird around our house. This morning I noticed the mistletoe in one of the gum trees had berries so I went looking to see if I could find a Mistletoe bird. After about 30 mins of listening and searching I saw two young birds high in the treetops. After lots of attempts to photograph the two birds, I had to settle for just a few "in focus" shots. Hopefully I will get another opportunity now I know they are living in the trees near the dam.
Mistletoe, away from Anglesey and near to home and while it's Christmas, so nice to see the Mistletoe growing up north.

Mistletoe is a fascinating plant with a rich history and unique characteristics. Here are some key points about mistletoe:
1. Parasitic Plant: Mistletoe is a hemiparasitic plant, meaning it attaches itself to the branches or trunks of trees and shrubs to extract water and nutrients. Despite this, it can still perform photosynthesis.
2. Appearance: Mistletoe has green, oval leaves and produces small, white berries. These berries are toxic to humans but are an important food source for birds.
3. Cultural Significance: Mistletoe is famously associated with Christmas traditions. It's often hung in doorways, and people standing underneath it are expected to kiss. This custom dates back to ancient times and is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
4. Medicinal Uses: Historically, mistletoe has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including epilepsy, hypertension, and arthritis. However, its effectiveness and safety are still subjects of scientific research.
5. Ecological Role: Mistletoe plays a crucial role in ecosystems. It provides food and habitat for various wildlife, including birds, insects, and mammals. Some species of mistletoe are even considered keystone species, meaning they have a disproportionately large impact on their environment.
Mistletoe's blend of botanical intrigue and cultural lore makes it a plant worth knowing about, especially during the festive season. 🌿🎄
