Quite common in the area, this parasitic plant is often one of the most noticeable features of the trees here. Seen directly adjacent to McKillops Bridge, Snowy River National Park, Victoria.
Mesquite Mistletoe(Phoradendron californicum) growing on a Catclaw Acacia(Acacia greggii). In Utah, this Mistletoe only grows in Beaver-Dam Wash, and usually on Acacia instead of Mesquite. When an Acacia has mistletoe, and almost all do here, it won't leaf out until very late in the spring. Their Berries are loved by birds, especially Phainopeplas.
Unmanaged timber stand also impacted by invasive mistletoe. Thinning projects in the area are part of the Rocky Point-White Swan Forest Resilience Targeted Implemntation Plan (TIP) under Montana Focused Conservation (MFC) and complement other projects completed by CSKT. This TIP is in partnership with Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Lake County Conservation District, and the Montana Departmnet of Natural Resources and Conservation. The purpose of the TIP is to improve forest resilience to weather and pest issues, decrease the likelihood of catastrophic wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface, and improve forest health. This work may also decrease risk to homes in the area from wildfire. Lake County, MT. June 2021.
It was night time, windy and no tripod =(
I would have loved to have another go at this beautiful tree.
A mistletoe growing, and flowering, on a Swamp Gum. It's the most common mistletoe in the area - there are two others.
I see clusters of mistletoe in the trees. I think I'll plan a sneak attack on my beloved when we go for a walk later.
Mistletoe in a tree beside our pond. Mistletoe isn't a good thing for a tree; it says the tree's health isn't good.
Омела на ветке дерева. Видно, что омела начинает вегетацию раньше, чем дерево в целом, что отличает ее от ведьминой метлы (witches broom), листья на ветках которой появляются однорвменно с листьями на других (здоровых) ветвях дерева.
I meant to upload this the other day but forgot. It's an outtake from the shoot where I was taking my mistletoe photos, and there was something about it that made it impossible for me to delete.
Last year a man was arrested for shooting mistletoe out of a tree four miles from this one. In rural areas, a shotgun might be an effective way to harvest mistletoe. But he shouldn't have tried it on trees growing at a shopping mall.

Mistletoe is the common name for obligate hemiparasitic plants in the order Santalales. They are attached to their host tree or shrub by a structure called the haustorium, through which they extract water and nutrients from the host plant.

“You don’t want her to grow to an old maid, do you?”
Colton huffed, turning back to Claire. “I can see where you get your powers of persuasion from,” he said quietly.
“It’s alright, it doesn’t matter,” muttered Claire, her face flaming. She could barely look him in the eye. “It’s just a stupid superstition.”
“Oh, come on!” Briony chimed in now. “It’s Christmas!”
He laughed uneasily again. Quickly, before she’d even realized it was happening, he moved close in one step and ducked his head toward hers.
She held her breath. Her hand clamped so tightly around the stem of the wine glass she feared she’d crack it in two.

Australia has more than 90 species of mistletoe. They are parasitic plants that get their sustenance from the trees they grow on. But contrary to popular belief,
they don't kill the trees. Nor are they poisonous to people or livestock. In fact they play a really important role in biodiversity as they provide food and shelter for many native birds.
