I am happy to share with you a unique and moving moment I spent with a community living some 15km from Timbuktu in northern Mali in 2016. Thanks to a Quick impact project designed by a local NGO and supported by the Stabilization team of MINUSMA, it was possible to set up two water points in a very arid and remote area, one water point for humans and the other for animals. What was so moving in this visit was the fact that these communities had never seen running water from a tap. Therefore, when I arrived at the site coming from Bamako with my team and the NGO representatives together with the local community leaders to inaugurate the project, the site was full and colourful with women, children, men and animals, all ready to open the taps. After greeting everyone and hearing the explanation on the project, I was called by the group of women to stand beside them and turn the tap on, which they did with joy and pride. Water was pouring in front of their eyes, they were laughing, dancing, clapping and the atmosphere was all full of joy. After few long minutes, it was time to close the tap to save the precious water. The women refused to do so, saying ‘madam, would you let us enjoy seeing this marvellous dream come true as we never had water coming out this way’. It was magic! I was very touched, happy and sad at the same time. Here we are standing at 15 km from one of the most mythical cities in the world, where tourists and desert lovers used to come from all over the world to visit, worship, dream and yet in 2016 people living there had still never seen running water! I was so pleased that as civilian peacekeepers, we managed to change and improve their livelihoods and realized their dreams. It may not take much for some of us, but it means so much for others. Up until now, the community continues to be dedicated, responsible for ensuring the sustainability of the project."
