Makawao Maui - September 2013 For a day in Makawao, the colorful cowboy town at the edge of the forest, you may want to explore Haleakala Ranch lands by booking an eco-tour. Just outside of town, turn on Piiholo Road where one of the more unique horseback trail rides can be found. Piiholo Ranch features a working cattle ranch where horseback riders can help move the herd on certain days of the week. Also be sure to check out their new Piiholo Ranch Store in the heart of Makawao town.
Piiholo Ranch also just introducted a new Zipline Adventure. You can experience the thrill of five different ziplines, including the fifth zipline that is Maui's longest — over a half mile — while taking in the amazing view from the top of Piiholo Hill to the legendary Pools of Kalena.
The beauty and bounty of Upcountry Maui is an experience that can be enjoyed by all and appreciated by aloha 'aina — love of the land.

I'm just going thru some pics from my trip to Maui last summer. This was taken at a beach we reached after our bike ride down Haleakala.
It was amazing to swim with bunch of Honu (Turtule) this afternoon at Black Rock.

Hāna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 1,235 at the 2010 census. Hana is located at the eastern end of the island of Maui and is one of the most isolated communities in the state. It is reached mainly via the Hana Highway, a long, winding, 52-mile-long (84 km) highway along Maui's northern shore.
Like most of Hawaii, Hana was probably first settled between 500 and 800 AD by Polynesian peoples.
The winding, famously scenic Hana Highway was completed in 1926. Originally paved with gravel, it provided the first land vehicle access to the town. Hana's population peaked in the first half of the twentieth century, with a population of about 3500.
Near Hana are natural areas and several swimming holes in the Haleakala National Park.
Hana's climate is hot and wet year round, typical of a tropical rainforest.

Keanae Peninsula, Maui - Papillon and Jurassic Park were filmed here. The rock at the end of the penisula is where they filmed Steve McQueen jumping into the surf at the end of Papillon.
The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles (1,883 km2) and is the 17th largest island in the United States. Maui is part of the State of Hawaiʻi and is the largest of Maui County's four islands, bigger than Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and unpopulated Kahoʻolawe. In 2010, Maui had a population of 144,444, third-highest of the Hawaiian Islands, behind that of Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island. Kahului is the largest census-designated place (CDP) on the island with a population of 26,337 as of 2010 and is the commercial and financial hub of the island. Wailuku is the seat of Maui County and is the third-largest CDP as of 2010. Other significant places include Kīhei (including Wailea and Makena in the Kihei Town CDP, which is the second-most-populated CDP in Maui); Lahaina (including Kāʻanapali and Kapalua in the Lahaina Town CDP); Makawao; Pāʻia; Kula; Haʻikū; and Hāna.
Native Hawaiian tradition gives the origin of the island's name in the legend of Hawaiʻiloa, the Polynesian navigator credited with discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. According to that legend, Hawaiʻiloa named the island of Maui after his son, who in turn was named for the demigod Māui.
The two major industries on Maui are agriculture and tourism. Government research groups and high technology companies have discovered that Maui has a business environment favorable for growth in those sectors as well. Agriculture value-added enterprises are growing rapidly.

The grounds of the Maui Banyan. We spent our wedding trip of 2008 here, and returned for our first anniversary as well. They take great care of the grounds, and the buildings. And beautiful Kamaole II Beach is right across the road. It was an amazing base camp for our Hawaiian Adventures, and we cannot wait to go back again.
