It does not matter how many times you visit Sconey Castle (National Trust) the views around the castle are amazing. Each time they are different, according to the time of day and light conditions and the change of colours to the time of year.
And for me, it makes a welcome change to birds, butterflies and insects.
Another 7 to 10 days will see the extensive gardens in full bloom.
Sunsets are proof that no matter what happens, every day can end beautifully. 💕

White crayon on black cardboard, one LED lamp. Imagine a space of total equality and perfect non-distinction. The space would not be empty, but everything in it - energy and matter - would be completely evenly distributed. Because of this, there would be no movement, no energy consumed or generated. Therefore no heat and no light and no life. It would be the end. The space could be our universe, and its death.

It was a soft quiet day at Ano Nuevo preserve along the San Mateo County coastline. The sun was hard at work trying to break the fog's stubborn hold on the land. It was tough work, but the wraithlike light was quite beautiful to behold.

The TLK Flisak is, by modern Polish standards, a very unusual train. It has been introduced (or rather re-introduced) into the timetable in December of 2021 as one of the very few off-season diesel trains of PKP Intercity. It also has a very exotic route, as it barely uses any mainlines throughout its journey from Gdynia to Katowice. It was created primarily to provide smaller towns in central Poland with a long distance connection, which IC has not been doing for the past 20 years or so. As a matter of fact, it is currently the only passenger train serving the station in Rypin.
The name Flisak is a Polish term for a person which guides rafts down the river, which has been an important job for the peoples inhabiting what today is central Poland throughout history. I find the name pretty suitable, as the train's journey mostly follows the Vistula river.
On 26.02.2026 it was 754.041 hauling the train 54102 Gdynia Główna - Katowice on the unelectrified part of its journey. On the railway line 207 the architecture predominantly dates back to the Prussian period with its very characteristic red brick buildings scattered around everywhere. Just like on this picture, which I took just outside of Sztum, as the train was decelerating for a halt at the local station. Even though the temperatures have risen from -20 to around -3, the ice layer on the tiny trackside lake was thick enough to remain solid for the following days.

For three years, I photographed Chestnut-sided Warblers in the same location. In more recent times, the birds have moved further away from the road into more difficult terrain. This is quite normal for birds of regenerating forests. Like Golden-winged Warblers, Chestnut-sided Warblers thrive in second growth forests. Whether it be as a result of storm blow downs or human logging. These regenerating forests are prime habitat for songbirds like this, until they aren't. In only a matter of years, these forests will grow and become unsuitable for warblers like this. At this point, they move on to the next patch until it too will grow beyond suitability.
*This image is a composite, featuring two original images. Essentially, the bird landed on the stick and I wasn't thrilled with how the wildflowers appeared. So, once the bird moved on, I moved closer to the perch and took another image, with the flowers more prominently shown as they were closer. In post, I merged the two files to make for a more pleasing background.

Epiphyllum ("upon the leaf" in Greek) is a genus of 19 species and over 100 hybrids of epiphytic plants in the cactus family (Cactaceae).
Common names are climbing cactus, orchid cactus, leaf cactus, yellow tang, moon cactus, rickrack cactus, fishbone cactus, and queen of the night.
The Epiphyllum species are some of the most spectacular flowering plants, that typically open in the evening and bloom for a few days.
The flowers are large, 8 - 20 cm diameter, with numerous petals in the colors white, yellow and pink to red.
The Epiphyllum habitat ranges from Mexico and Central America with some extending into Northern South America and the Caribbean islands. Most grow in trees where they tuck their roots into pockets of decaying vegetable matter which settle into nooks and crannies of tree branches. Their tropical environment provides them with lots of warmth and high humidity and most important… shading from full sun. They share their habitat with orchids, bromeliads, ferns and mosses.
Epiphyllum is een geslacht van 19 succulenten en honderden kweekvormen uit de cactussenfamilie (Cactaceae).
Er is geen Nederlandse naam voor deze lidcactus of bladcactus. Soms zie je de naam koningin van de nacht, maar die naam geldt eigenlijk voor maar één van de 19 soorten (Epiphyllum oxypetalum).
Epiphyllum behoort tot de meest spectaculaire bloeiende planten, die meestal 's avonds open gaat en een paar dagen blijft bloeien.
De vaak grote bloemen hebben een diameter van 8 à 20 cm met tal van bloemblaadjes in de kleuren wit, geel en roze tot rood. Gekweekte soorten kunnen ook tweekleurig zijn.
Epiphyllum komt voor in Mexico en Midden-Amerika, en een paar soorten in noordelijk Zuid-Amerika en op de Caraïben.
Ze groeien in de bomen van tropische regenwouden tot een hoogte van circa 1800 meter. Ze vestigen zich in hoeken en gaten van boomtakken waar ze zich wortelen in rottend plantaardig materiaal. De tropische omgeving biedt een hoge luchtvochtigheid, veel warmte en het belangrijkste ... schaduw van volle zon. Ze delen hun habitat met orchideeën, bromelia's, varens en mossen.
