originally known as Fukashi Castle, is one of Japan's premier historic castles, The building is also known as the "Crow Castle" due to its black exterior. It was the seat of Matsumoto Domain under the Edo Period Tokugawa shogunate. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture.

Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain. Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats, and gatehouses.

Matsumoto Castle is one of the few "original" castles in Japan, due to its location it wasn´t bombed during WWII.

It´s a perfect example of hirajiro (flatland) castle.

The garden around the moat was full of cherries in blossom it was one of the most beautiful castles I´ve ever seen.

Well, I made a new necklace. Wigs fall flat when it's hot and you're being eaten by bugs.

Stopped by Matsumoto Castle for a few minutes early on Saturday morning. I had driven up to Matsumoto the night before and got over to the castle fairly early (around 5:30am). It was a good time to be there (no other people to speak of) and the light was fairly nice, though as the inner grounds weren't open yet I could only get around to 2 of the 4 sides. I ended up with a lot of back or side lit shots because of this but I'm still happy with what I got. After visiting so many times of the years I'm happy I finally have a few pictures of this place that are my own.

In 2011 I had the chance to travel to Japan and this was one location I was really looking forward to. The Castle is amazing, surrounded by a massive moat and the grounds span several acres. The moat, grounds and foundations are all original, and the castle was rebuilt using only traditional materials and building methods.

Matsumoto-jō

Matsumoto, Nagano

Matsumoto-jo is a National Treasure of Japan. Built in 1504 by Shimadachi Sadanaga of the Ogasawara clan, it served as a base for various lords until the Meiji Restoration. Although the gates and outer castle structures have been rebuilt or taken down all-together, the inner walls and main keep remain in tact. This makes Matsumoto-jo one of the most special castles in Japan--a true original. It is known as the Black Crow Castle, for it's dark color, a comparative moniker to the White Heron Castle, Himeji-jo.

The mix of natural and artificial light give a varied colour balance across the scene - resulting in this synthetic rather then natural look.

Matsumoto Castle (松本城 Matsumoto-jō?), also known as the "Crow Castle" (烏城 Karasu-jo?) because of its black exterior, is one of Japan's premier historic castles.[1] It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture and is within easy reach of Tokyo by road or rail.

The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late 16th century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.[1]

Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain.[1] Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats and gatehouses.[

The Matsumoto of Kakunodate in Akita, Japan were samurai serving the Imamiya, hereditary senior vassals of the Satake clan. Previously, the Matsumoto family served the Ashina and lived in Tamachi Sugasawa. However, after the downfall of the Ashina and entering into the service of the Imamiya, they moved to Kobitomachi, where the house is still located. This area is where the Satake clan's lower-ranking samurai resided. This house dates back to the late Edo period.

this castle is one of the last wooden castle in japan. Everyone take the same picture because the castle is in the middle of a city and is surrounded by towers, as a consequence, it's quite difficult to take a good picture without modern buildings.
