Matsumoto - Japan.

Matsumoto Castle, also known as the "Crow Castle" because of its black exterior, is one of Japan's premier historic castles. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture.

The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late 16th century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.

Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain. Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats and gatehouses. (Cit. Wikipedia)

With the pine tree in the foreground, the castle rising behind. It looks like an archetypical japanese postcard.

The 3 quarter view of Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto, Nagano prefecture, Japan. This is one of the prettiest views of the castle, and allows the most complete reflection in the moat. Absolutely beautiful on a clear sunny day under blue skies.

Matsumoto's castle also known as Karasu-jô, the "crow castle" due to the color of his walls. It was erected in 1595 and it's one of the 4 castes listed as a national treasure. It is located in the city of Matsumoto in the prefecture of Nagano. View during the autumn season.

Le château de Matsumoto est aussi connu sous le nom de Karasu-jô, le château du corbeau, à cause de la couleur de ses murs. An early autumn morning and the mist had begun to lift, revealing the peace and beauty of the 16th century castle and its moat (Nagano Prefecture). It was always one of my favourite places to walk.

It has long been a goal of mine of capturing this castle in winter. The classic shot is against a clear blue sky, snow everywhere with the moat frozen over. The weather didn't cooperate but the illuminated scene at night is worth the visit alone. The funny looking trails in the sky are ducks, you may or may not see them depending on your monitor's range. Thanks for viewing.

Don't you get it? The ones who are afraid of heights don't trust themselves enough not to jump.

Matsumoto Castle (松本城, Matsumotojō) is one of the most complete and beautiful among Japan's original castles. It is a "hirajiro" - a castle built on plains rather than on a hill or mountain. Matsumoto Castle is unique for having both a secondary donjon and a turret adjoined to its main keep. The castle structures, in combination with their characteristic black wainscoting, give off an air of grandeur and poise.

Matsumotojo's main castle keep and its smaller, second donjon were built from 1592 to 1614. Both these structures were well-fortified as peace was not yet fully achieved at the time. In 1635, when military threats had ceased, a third, barely defended turret and another for moon viewing were added to the castle.

Caught the Matsumoto Castle 松本城 in the golden evening sun. What a magnificent sight! Also known as the Crow Castle due to its black exterior, the Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's best preserved Castles.
