Himeji-jo is the top castle in Japan, and is certainly an amazing fortress complex and very much deserves it's top place - however - Matsumoto-jo is much better for photography and well worth a visit. We are glad we went there before HImeji-jo as we might have been tempted to skip it, thinking we'd seen the best.

Matsumoto Castle (松本城 Matsumoto-jō?) is one of Japan's premier historic castles.[1] The building is also known as the "Crow Castle" (烏城 Karasu-jo?) due to its black exterior. It was the seat of the Matsumoto domain. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture and is within easy reach of Tokyo by road or rail.
The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late sixteenth century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.
Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain. Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats, and gatehouses.
Stopped by Matsumoto Castle for a few minutes early on Saturday morning. I had driven up to Matsumoto the night before and got over to the castle fairly early (around 5:30am). It was a good time to be there (no other people to speak of) and the light was fairly nice, though as the inner grounds weren't open yet I could only get around to 2 of the 4 sides. I ended up with a lot of back or side lit shots because of this but I'm still happy with what I got. After visiting so many times of the years I'm happy I finally have a few pictures of this place that are my own.

Matsumoto Castle, constructed in 1592, is one of four castles designated as National Treasures of Japan the oldest castle donjon of which remains in Japan. Because of the elegant black roof, Matsumoto Castle is sometimes called Crow Castle. Inside the castle are step stairs and low ceilings leading past displays of armor and weapons from the Sengoku period ("Warring-States") when the castle was built. The narrow wooden windows, once used by archers and gunmen, provide amazing views of the Japanese Alps, Matsumoto City and the koi and swans circling in the moat below.
