Founder’s Day 7-18-20 -Taste of the Past: 7-18-20.
Founder's Day (A Taste of the Past) was held in Bristol, Indiana on Sat. July 18, 2020. Bristol on the River (BOTR) group wanted to bring a little fun to the otherwise event-cancelled summer. So, they decided on helping some downtown restaurants and groups to celebrate that bygone days event, "Watermelon Carnival or Festival in Bristol. The BOTR supplied watermelons to them, so they could offer a Free Watermelon slice to their customers. In older days, every year, Bristol, Indiana - once the fruit capitol of the midwest - celebrated with watermelon festivals. Today was a chance to continue the tradition. Attached are photos from the day's events at: The Lions Club; Eastern Star Craft Bazaar and BBQ carryout dinners; Evans Restaurant; The Redbird; and Bristol Yard Sales. Just the Facts: A Bristol Indiana Melon Carnival on Sept. 15, 1909 was held in the area called “The Green” It was located along the St. Joe River on the north side of Vistula Street, near the corner of Vistula and South Division Street. The Green was located from the West to the East where the 7-11 is today. In June, 2012, the Elkhart County Historical Museum led guided walking tours with 2 groups of over 40 each group and stopped to hand out watermelon near the area of the former "Green."
We hadn't planned to take both Mason and Avery with us to another Monarchs basketball game this season, ... but well, it just sorta worked out.
Today was Game 2 for the first round of the West Coast Conference championships, after the Monarchs had already beat their contenders in Houston for Game 1. We didn't have a nurse available today, so it meant only one of us going to the game with a friend and the other staying home with the boys and watching the game on TV. We were actually OK with this plan, but we were presented with a hard-to-refuse option.
Mary had been back and forth on email with our ticket rep for a couple of days discussing options for adding two more seats to our season ticket package for next season. The ticket rep had learned about our boys and knew we weren't going to both be able to attend the game today. A couple of days ago we received a call from her offering us a luxury suite that had become available. How much? we asked. No cost! 8 tickets would be waiting for us at will call.
So, we rounded up a few friends at the last minute and packed up the boys, (including Avery's new handy dandy shoulder bag to fit his new handy dandy mini O2 tank) and headed to the game today. So, we enjoyed the game from a huge suite with multiple seating options for a great view of the court. We definitely enjoyed the extra amenities of a sink packed with drinks and a popcorn machine full of the freshly popped yellow stuff. A large plasma screen and a private bathroom added to the conveniences.
What was most important, is that we were all able to go to the game together as a family after all and even enjoy it with good friends. We had plenty of space to help keep Avery in a place that he was comfortable and not too overwhelmed by the action. There was space to feed him and allow him to roll around on the carpet for a bit. Mason enjoyed the ability to crawl around safely as well and was thrilled to socialize with the older kids that came along.
What a treat! And to top things off, the Monarchs played an incredible game and finished off the series with a victory.

The entertainers at the Thredbo Blues Festival last month had me smiling from ear to ear. This little event takes place in the charming alpine village for which it is named, high in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. For two and a half days, the restaurants, bars, and public spaces are bouncing with joyful sounds.
I was introduced to the wonderful Mason Rack Band: when he’s not sounding like Tom Waits growling an old blues-rock standard, Mason Rack is giggling like a mischievous child and telling stories of growing up in a family of entertainers.
