PIAZZA DEL POPOLO. IL SALOTTO BUONO.
Conosciuta come Salotto d’Italia, Piazza del Popolo è il cuore del centro storico di Ascoli Piceno ed è essa stessa un monumento a cielo aperto.
La famosa Piazza del Popolo di Ascoli Piceno – nota anche come “Salotto d’Italia” – deve la sua indubbia bellezza al rifacimento operato nei primi anni del ‘500 da maestranze lombarde su probabile disegno di Bernardino di Pietro da Carona per volontà del governatore Raniero de’ Ranieri. Per dare al luogo un aspetto armonioso ed uniforme si costruì un colonnato di travertino con volte a mattoni per coprire le irregolari botteghe medievali che si affacciavano sulla piazza. I lavori proseguirono per due anni (1507-09) e furono usati finanziamenti pubblici e privati.
I proprietari delle botteghe ebbero infatti la possibilità di sopraelevare il proprio fabbricato rispettando regole ben precise: usare gli stessi materiali, (travertino e laterizi); alzare la struttura di un solo piano, mantenendo quindi la stessa altezza delle altre costruzioni; seguire la stessa tipologia di finestra. Queste precauzioni però non bastarono per creare un perfetto “ordine rinascimentale”: l’ampiezza degli archi, infatti risultò diversa perchè diverse erano le grandezze dei lotti preesistenti. I merli ghibellini sono un’aggiunta successiva.
Prima della fortunata sistemazione rinascimentale, la piazza era stata anche il luogo di lavoro degli scalpellini che tagliavano i blocchi di travertino per ricavarne mattoni utili alla costruzione della Chiesa di San Francesco. Dalle scaglie prodotte deriverà il nome medievale di “Piazza delle scaje”. In altri momenti fu detta anche “Platea superior” per distinguerla da quella “inferior”, attuale Piazza Ventidio Basso.

LA PORTA STRETTA.
Una piacevole passeggiata consente di raggiungere Grottammare alta, l’originario borgo medievale a picco sul mare, raccolto sul ciglio di un colle, con rustiche case e piccole vie, dove si espande il profumo degli aranceti. Lungo il cammino che vi conduce si trova la seicentesca villa del Cardinale Decio Azzolino, dove soggiornò Cristina di Svezia.
A seguito dell’espugnazione della città nel 1525 da parte del pirata Dulcigno, il borgo fu fortificato con mura, porte e un Torrione detto della battaglia.
Nella vicina Piazzetta Peretti si gode di una vista eccezionale dal portico balconato dell’edificio che ospita lo storico Teatro dell’Arancio, nei cui pressi sorge la Torre dell’Orologio.

THE NARROW DOOR.
A pleasant walk allows you to reach Grottammare alta, the original medieval village overlooking the sea, gathered on the edge of a hill, with rustic houses and small streets, where the scent of orange groves expands. Along the path that leads you there is the seventeenth-century villa of Cardinal Decio Azzolino, where Christina of Sweden stayed.
Following the conquest of the city in 1525 by the pirate Ulcigno, the village was fortified with walls, gates and a tower known as the battle tower.
In the nearby Piazzetta Peretti you can enjoy an exceptional view from the balcony portico of the building that houses the historic Orange Theater, near which stands the Clock Tower.

Sant Privat d'en Bas, La Garrotxa, Girona, España.
Sant Privat d'en Bas es un antiguo municipio de la comarca de la Garrotxa, que en 1968 fue integrado dentro de la Vall d'en Bas.
En 1811 hay nació José Estartús y Aiguabella, mariscal de campo carlista que participó en las tres guerras carlistas.
En 2006 su población era de 908 habitantes.
Sant Privat d'en Bas is an old municipality in the Garrotxa region, which in 1968 was integrated into the Vall d'en Bas.
In 1811 José Estartús y Aiguabella was born, a Carlist field marshal who participated in the three Carlist wars.
In 2006 its population was 908 inhabitants.

MARC train #532 pulls away from the station at Halethorpe MD on February 2, 2021. Northbound trains were making their stops along #1 track for unknown reasons. Normally they use the siding right next to the northbound platform but it remained unused for several days as evidenced by the fresh orange rust on the railhead.
MARC GP39H-2 75 was on the approach to the Dorsey stop on an overcast winter morning along the former B&O.
Rebuilt from a Milwaukee Road GP40, the 75 is still at it, hauling commuters around the Baltimore-Washington area. Those B&O signals are no longer at it, of course, replaced by generic Safetrans signals many years ago.
A pair of former Burlington Northern E9s and some Budd RDCs were languishing in MARC's Riverside shop in Baltimore back in 1997.
None of these would ever run for MARC again.
Santa Pau, La Garrotxa, Girona, España.
Santa Pau es una villa y municipio de la comarca de la Garrotxa.
Esta en el sureste de la llanura de Olot, en plena zona volcánica, en medio del valle entre las cordilleras de Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres y a 496 m sobre el nivel del mar. Cuenta con una única vía de comunicación: la carretera de Olot a Banyoles, y se encuentra a una distancia de 150 km de Barcelona, a 50 Km de Girona y a 9 km de Olot.
En línea recta equidista a 45 Km de la Bahía de Roses y del pico del Canigó, y tanto el uno como el otro son visibles en días claros desde diversos lugares del término municipal. Esto da un carácter mixto de prepirineo y prelitoral a su climatología y por tanto también al tipo de vegetación.
El 81% del territorio municipal forma parte del Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa, y dentro este lugar hay puntos de interés especial como el Volcán de Santa Margarita, el volcán Croscat y los gredales volcánicas, la Fageda d'en Jordà o el salto de agua de Can Batlle.

It is in the southeast of the Olot plain, in the middle of the volcanic area, in the middle of the valley between the Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres mountain ranges and 496 m above sea level. It has a single communication route: the road from Olot to Banyoles, and it is located at a distance of 150 km from Barcelona, 50 km from Girona and 9 km from Olot.
In an equidistant straight line 45 km from the Bay of Roses and the Canigó peak, and both are visible on clear days from various places in the municipality. This gives a mixed pre-Pyrenean and pre-coastal character to its climate and therefore also to the type of vegetation.
81% of the municipal territory is part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, and within this place there are points of special interest such as the Santa Margarita Volcano, the Croscat volcano and the volcanic gredales, the Fageda d'en Jordà or the waterfall of Can Batlle.
