Jack frost has been working overnight to form shapes in the pool of water in the field near the estuary at Talsarnau.

A fisherman threw some carcasses into the water. First, there were 2 pelicans. Then these 4 and then ..... chaos ensued as more and more pelicans came hoping for a tasty treat!

Happy Wing Wednesday!

In this blue train, these boys are coming to the door and searching for something and at a moment he noticed the camera and probably was amazed! Location: Kamalapur Railway Station, Dhaka Country: Bangladesh

While this may look like a peaceful setting, the Canada Geese were quite vocal this trip to the arboretum. And not just vocal, they also put on quite a show chasing each other, flapping their wings and well, just acting like a bunch of crazy geese.

It was quite fun to watch but the acts of craziness were done in short bursts and nearly impossible to catch. I just barely caught the tail end of one such outburst of the two on the right.

looks good in lightbox

Last year we had so much rain on the ground that these geese decided to go swimming in it. There were so many geese, that this picture only captures about a third of them!

Subject: Discovering the Holy Spirit

A very close friend of mine, shared his experience, of discovering the Holy Spirit. His story was delightful and beautiful, but equally, his journey, was painful and confusing. You see he had been raised in a Contemporary Christian faith, one that is far away, from the faith he was learning as a catechumen. In his journey through the faith, he discovered that through the Holy Spirit, that one never walks alone.

He told me that Catholics don’t just celebrate Christmas and Easter on one day for a few hours, they enter deeply into these moments of Christ’s life. It begins with Advent…26 days before the birth of Jesus-where we celebrate the incarnation… at the birth of Jesus…we celebrate for 12 more days. We enter ordinary time for a several weeks…and then we enter the passion of Christ, the Lenten Season for 40 days…we then enter Holy Week…we Enter 50 days of Easter and which concludes today-Pentecost Sunday. Catholics take a breath.

On this important day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and what a unique gift it is. No longer do we just worship a God who dwells in an Ark or in a Temple but in each of us.

I certainly can relate with my friend as a convert myself. I know that on the day I was baptized and confirmed, my own little Pentecost…that I would never walk alone again. It reminds me of that great teaching from St. Augustine who said that “God knows me better than I know myself.” My friend expanded on this “So, even when I am feeling unloveable…I know that God loves me and constantly resides within us.”

Unlike the disciples who surrounded Jesus, we have something they did not-the gift of the Holy Spirit-the third person of the Trinity. The question that must be asked, and this is important: is there a difference in having the Holy Spirit verses not having it? Our Gospel reading, hints at the collective state of mind of the disciples who do not “yet” have this precious gift…they were locked in a room out of fear. These are the same followers who left Jesus alone in the garden and scattered when he entered his passion.

We know also, that these same disciples after receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit, burst out the doors of the upper room and became great promoters of the “good news.” Bravely, they followed Christ and most of them would also suffer and die a martyrs death.

The effects of what happened in the upper room over 2000 years ago has clearly has rippled forward in time…here we are! We are surrounded by the visible reality of this event. We have our beautiful traditions, our beautiful churches, and most importantly our sacraments.

To understand the Holy Spirit would be like trying to capture the wind with a fish net. Though we cannot capture the Holy Spirit, we most definitely feel the affects: God lifts us up, surrounds us, and sustains us.

Yes, there are many mysterious moments in our lives:

-a moment when our faith blossoms

-a moment when Jesus is allowed to Sheppard our lives

-a moment of understanding God’s promises and seeing our lives transformed

Take a quiet moment this week and try reflecting how the Holy Spirit has guided you in your life. It is as easy as looking in the rearview mirror to see those pivotal moments in your life where you can see the hand of God directing you, holding you, forgiving you, and blessing you. With this knowledge, you will feel confident, that God is with you even as you walk into an uncertain future. This is after all called walking by faith. As we prepare to receive communion Remember, Jesus’ words that he would never leave us alone. “Peace be with you!”

"Bobcat Looks Back" by Patti Deters. This lone bobcat (Lynx rufus) was seen walking through a remote area of the Sonoran Desert near Tucson, Arizona. I was sitting at a photo blind when this beautiful wild creature suddenly appeared. The bobcat was extremely silent as he slowly walked through the area, totally ignoring me and not seeming to have a care in the world. You can see the ground is full of pebbles and little rocks, but the bobcat made not a single sound - an important hunting skill for this solitary predator. As the animal was about to go behind a rock, he turned his head and looked toward the photo blind - the only time he ever acknowledged I was there. This was my first (and will probably be the only) time I've ever seen a bobcat up close in the wild. These elusive wild cats are mammals and are sometimes referred to as a lynx, catamount, or wildcat. Whatever you call them, these feline carnivores are stealthy and oh so beautiful.
