The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 25th of March is “pencil sharpener”. Luckily this was an easy theme for me, as I am an artist amongst many other things, so I always have an array of pencils and sharpeners within easy reach. So, here we have one of my silver pencil sharpeners hedged in by sixteen of my Derwent studio pencils. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

When I was twelve, I entered a drawing competition, and I won my first set of Derwent pencils: a tin case of 36. As a designer and illustrator as well as a photographer, over the years I have acquired several different sets of Derwents for different purposes, including my beloved Derwent Studio Pencil set of 72 which I use predominantly these days for designing clothes.

Derwent, or the Derwent Cumberland Pencil Company, is a manufacturer of pencils and other stationery. The business began in 1832 in Cumberland under the name of Banks, Son & Co. The company was bought by Acco UK and became a brand of their product range.

The magnolia tree is arching gracefully into my garden from next door. I had a rare day in the garden today, as both the weather and the diary obliged. I have mixed feelings about the magnolia tree as its branches are breaking the fence. However, it is so beautiful in spring that I spare it. Although a little pruning wouldn’t go amiss.

Route 66 label on the lining of a denim jacket. 💙 Although I bought the jacket locally, and wear it often, I did get a chance to wear it on a bus trip along historic Route 66 a few years ago. 💙

For the theme Seashells. It is a shell from my very small collection of shells I have found on various beaches in Canada. The shell has to be unique in some way in order for me to take it home. I think most shells should be left on the beaches. But today, when I can’t go to the beach, I was happy to create this scene on my back deck. I placed the shell on a printed picture of flowing water that I took a few years ago. There were some orange fall reflections in the water and this background seemed to complement the colours of the shell. Happy Friday everyone!

A close-up, silhouette of a 3-D greeting card. The card is a Valentine’s card I gave to my wife this year. It says “I lava you!” on the front. When opened, two volcanoes pop-up each spewing sparks of hearts and being connected by the heart cloud. The starry night sky was simulated with fiery lights (hidden from view) illuminating a sheet of glitter paper from below. The fiery lights also provided the illuminated horizon effect.

For Looking Close…on Friday theme of things floating on/in water, I got out my ducky and a marble water bowl. This ducky floats on his side. I tried to get him upright, Although he is floating on his side, he is floating!

Really tiny leaves, but the veins in them are so beautiful.

I put them on my light pad.

This is 5 cm.
