There was once upon a time...
"A king!" my little readers will instantly exclaim.
No, children you are wrong. There was once upon a time a piece of wood.
The wood was not valuable. It was only a common log like those that are burnt in winter in the stoves and fireplaces to make a cheerful blaze and warm the rooms.
I cannot say how it came about, but the fact is that one fine day this piece of wood was lying in the shop of an old carpenter of the name of Master Antonio. He was, however, called by everybody Master Cherry, on account of the end of his nose which was always red and polished as a ripe cherry.
These are the first few lines of Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio. The original version. Not the Disney Americanization of this wonderful tale. It is available in a wonderful volume illustrated and designed by Jim Dine and published by Steidel in 2006.

Old log or Imitation...Old log wins, because I can pull this to little bits!
Willy got a imitation log as a toy because it leaves no mess.As you can see he has chewed it.
Old logs have natural smells which Labs love and they can chew them with ease, they just fall apart which must be very satisfying in our dogs eyes!
