This was our local guide that showed us around Guilin and took us down to Yangshuo. He was invaluable for his local knowledge and reccomendations on sights most folks don't see.

I had run into a local guide and expert that was leading a client to the boreal rarities who stated this species was rarely actually seen (usualy only heard). I went up Whiteface Mountian and stopped at all the pull-offs. At a pull-off at about 4500 feet in stunted spruce, I got out of the car, and this bird was singing right over my head! The mist was really bad so the shot is dark. I'm happy with it none-the-less. I'll be posting a few more shots with more straight-ahead looks later.

It was 12:30 pm when we met Nahim , our local guide, at the village of Wadi Ram (???? ???), a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. The wadi has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times including the Nabateans - leaving their mark in all kind of forms, nowdays the valley is populated by Bedouin tribes. Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. by fall Nahim set the Jeep in the direction of the camp whose located on a small hill observing a large territory of the Wadi. This lion was given his name by the local guides. Mind you, I think he was entitled to be grumpy as his face was all battered and scarred (on the left side) and he was missing two canine teeth. He gave Tony a scare when he roared almost in his face!

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

The village of Laprak in Gorkha was completely destroyed in the Nepal earthquake on 25 April. Six hundred buildings crumbled and 4300 people were left homeless. The entire town evacuated to higher ground, setting up make-shift shelters, eventually covering them with tarps. Richard Welch with Ugandan Water Project, and Dave Pearson with I Thirst International, took 150 buckets and Sawyer water filters to Laprak using the MAF coordinated helicopter flights, making multiple trips for another WASH agency and their own from a staging area near where the road had been blocked by a landslide. Even walking to the village was too dangerous. Without the helicopter flight, they could not have reached Laprak.
