My local guide, Aron, was leading me to the edge of glacier in Skaftafell National Park where the ice cave lies below.
This winter (February 2013) was atypically warm so entering the ice cave was more dangerous due to the ice melt and would cause the cave collapse.
When we travel it is often difficult to decide how much we want to discover on our own, and how much we want to be shown the highlights of the places we visit. There are certainly many pros and cons of being your own, having a local guide, and joining an organized tour.
Languages and difficulty of logistics can affect this decision in a big way.
You might have more points to add, but here are some of the factors that affect our decisions.
On your own:

Flexibility to spend more or less time at a place
Ability to change plans at the last moment
Forced to gain a rapid knowledge of the area - ie. how to get around, read maps
Forced to interact with local people
Sense of self-discovery (in multiple ways)

We split the differences and made our India trip a combination of the 3.
I mention these things on this photo because this is the first night we were with our organized group on a tour of Rajasthan. We would not have chosen this high end hotel if we were on our own. It came with the tour, so here we are, and we are not disappointed.

These photos are from the Vancouver Sun Newspaper Architecture Tour series – Palm Springs Mid-Century Modern Adventure hosted by columnist Shelley Fralic and local guide and expert Kip Serafin. We toured houses by Richard Neutra, Donald Wexler, John Lautner, A Quincy Jones, William Krisel, Albert Frey and Hugh Kaptur, mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s. But we also took in many of the other sites and sounds of Palm Springs during modernism week, and had a bit of time for sunrise and sunset photography elsewhere in the valley. We had a wonderful time and would recommend others to upcoming Vancouver Sun tours, or other architecture tours in Palm Springs.

Ingólfshöfði is a nature reserve that's home to thousands of nesting sea-birds, like puffins and great skuas. This birdwatching tour was taken with the group Local Guide, which hauls people across a massive black sand beach in a hay cart to reach the cliffs where the birds live.
MEET THE STANS: KYRGYZSTAN - Simon (right), Producer Will Daws (left) and their local guide prepare to enter an abandoned, leaking and contaminated Soviet radioactive waste dump in Kyrgyzstan. Although the Soviets mined uranium in Kyrgyzstan for their nuclear weapons programme there has been little cleaning up since the Soviet Union collapsed. The Soviets buried radioactive waste and uranium in pits in this earthquake prone zone. Our guide said there were several areas on the pits where radiation levels spiked-up to more than 1,000 times normal levels. We tried to avoid them but nowhere was entirely safe.
Meet the Stans is a four-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters internationally, in which Simon Reeve travelled from the far north-west of Kazakhstan, by the Russian border, east to the Chinese border, south through Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the edge of Afghanistan, and west to Uzbekistan and the legendary Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.

Penglipuran Village is a traditional Balinese village situated in the tranquility of Bangli Regency featured by the string local traditions and custom. In order to discover this village, you may join Kintamani Volcano Tour where the local guide will drop you there
This is a local guide on one of the major scenes. Many questions were asked by the guys. It was a hot day but she stays cool as a so called cucumber.....

One of the few leopards to have been named by local guides - this is Lucy. She is between 7 and 9 years old (no one knows for sure) and has previously raised a number of litters. This year she has two cubs each about 4 months old (as of November 2024). Both were active and alert climbing and play fighting with each other whilst Mum kept an alert vigil over her family. We were fortunate to have this family all to ourselves for about 30 minutes. A real privilege.

Adenium multiflorum is small, succulent tree native to central and eastern Southern Africa. Like other members of the succulent Apocynaceae family, A. multiflorum has a milky latex with toxic alkaloids, specifically Cardiac glycosides . This latex is used as an arrow poison and as a fish stunning poison.
It is sometimes treated as a variety or subspecies of Adenium obesum
June 2022, Amazon Rainforest, Brazil. The Caboclos Lodge is located 2 hours from Manaus in the Lago Acajatuba and Paricatuba regions of the Amazon. The lodge lies deep in the Amazon rainforest and offers a look into local Caboclos life and activities and culture. Here women swim in the river with the Amazon river dolphin also known as botos. A local guide often holds a small fish as the dolphins swim up to be fed.
PUERTO GALERA, ORIENTAL MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
This coastal town is well known among tourists for its numerous pocket beaches and many snorkeling and diving spots. The area was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 1973 and has some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia. The marine environment has benefited in recent years from the influx of tourist dollars. This has seen a huge reduction in the number of fishermen in the area, as they gain higher revenue from tourists.
Among the famous beaches in Puerto Galera are Sabang Beach and White Beach. Both have extensive beaches with first-class or economy-class accommodations and an active night life with their numerous beach-side bars and restaurants. Sabang beach is the main destination for foreign tourists, while White Beach remains popular with local travelers. Since 2001 White beach has seen uncontrolled development. New restaurants and places to stay are rapidly encroaching on the beach itself and little remains of the once charming beach. Puerto Galera town is a pleasant but sleepy Philippine town with few attractions. It has a large central catholic church and a Pier area, with a selection of bistros and cafes.
Behind the beaches are the huge and generally unexplored mountain ranges of central Mindoro. A particular local attraction is the nine hole golf course perched on the hillside above White Beach which commands spectacular views over Puerto Galera's natural harbor and the Verde Island Passage. Mangyan tribes are scattered over the mountains sides - some of the more remote tribes have no contact with the outside world. Of the eight tribes on Mindoro, the Iraya are the largest. They are based in the Puerto Galera area.
Puerto Galera has become the top diving destination in the Philippines. Excellent diving is found less than 5 minutes from the Sabang area. The diving generally focuses around the areas either side of Escarceo Point which is famous for its current rips. Strong currents are a feature of the diving in Puerto Galera and it is good advice to employ the services of an experienced local guide or dive centre. There are upwards of thirty dive sites all within a 5-10 minute banca ride from Sabang Beach. Marine life is highly diverse. 180+ species of nudibranchs are found in the area and most species of fish can be seen A variety of wrecks have been sunk over the years in addition to the one genuine wreck of an engine of a WWII Japanese patrol boat.
Puerto Galera is also one of the main [technical diving]destinations in Asia. Technical Diving International - [TDI] has many dive centers in the area, offering the full range of TDI courses from Basic [nitrox] to advanced [trimix].

Here is our local guide as we are getting back in the boat getting ready to take him home. On the way back I hear what I thought was a cell phone but figured I was hearing things being out in the Brazilian jungle but he reaches into his pocket and pulls one out and answers it. I just couldn't believe it.
By the way, I had a phenomenal local guide on this trip. Without Frank, who works at the Nijmegen history museum, I NEVER would have found Schoonderlogt. It is really tough driving around this area. Forget confusing, it is way beyond that. By the way, out of some incredible coincidence, this was taken on the anniversary of the first day of Market Garden, September 17
