Ingólfshöfði is a nature reserve that's home to thousands of nesting sea-birds, like puffins and great skuas. This birdwatching tour was taken with the group Local Guide, which hauls people across a massive black sand beach in a hay cart to reach the cliffs where the birds live.
PUERTO GALERA, ORIENTAL MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
This coastal town is well known among tourists for its numerous pocket beaches and many snorkeling and diving spots. The area was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 1973 and has some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia. The marine environment has benefited in recent years from the influx of tourist dollars. This has seen a huge reduction in the number of fishermen in the area, as they gain higher revenue from tourists.
Among the famous beaches in Puerto Galera are Sabang Beach and White Beach. Both have extensive beaches with first-class or economy-class accommodations and an active night life with their numerous beach-side bars and restaurants. Sabang beach is the main destination for foreign tourists, while White Beach remains popular with local travelers. Since 2001 White beach has seen uncontrolled development. New restaurants and places to stay are rapidly encroaching on the beach itself and little remains of the once charming beach. Puerto Galera town is a pleasant but sleepy Philippine town with few attractions. It has a large central catholic church and a Pier area, with a selection of bistros and cafes.
Behind the beaches are the huge and generally unexplored mountain ranges of central Mindoro. A particular local attraction is the nine hole golf course perched on the hillside above White Beach which commands spectacular views over Puerto Galera's natural harbor and the Verde Island Passage. Mangyan tribes are scattered over the mountains sides - some of the more remote tribes have no contact with the outside world. Of the eight tribes on Mindoro, the Iraya are the largest. They are based in the Puerto Galera area.
Puerto Galera has become the top diving destination in the Philippines. Excellent diving is found less than 5 minutes from the Sabang area. The diving generally focuses around the areas either side of Escarceo Point which is famous for its current rips. Strong currents are a feature of the diving in Puerto Galera and it is good advice to employ the services of an experienced local guide or dive centre. There are upwards of thirty dive sites all within a 5-10 minute banca ride from Sabang Beach. Marine life is highly diverse. 180+ species of nudibranchs are found in the area and most species of fish can be seen A variety of wrecks have been sunk over the years in addition to the one genuine wreck of an engine of a WWII Japanese patrol boat.
Puerto Galera is also one of the main [technical diving]destinations in Asia. Technical Diving International - [TDI] has many dive centers in the area, offering the full range of TDI courses from Basic [nitrox] to advanced [trimix].

Going into Shiretoko without a snowshoe during winter is probably suicide, as the snow were easily as high as an adult!

Working with a local guide, Helga to pick up some endemics in and near the Gluepot Reserve in South Australia. Great skies that morning.
It was quite a long drive to our second main location but our local guide knew of a spot that might be good for butterflies. It was a sort of recreational area in natural surroundings.
This is not a good photo but reminds me of the fact that there were many of these hairstreaks seen here. The light was not good and they were not very cooperative in either positioning or settling, but the quantity made this memorable.
George is the local guide. The group has not yet com up to the entrance of the church. The entrance has been modified at various time in the past and today is rather nondescript.

Seen at Sirena Biological Station, within Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica. One of the highlights from my Costa Rica trip. This bird was at a hidden roost, shown to me by a local guide named Nito. Such a stunning species. A digiscoped video.

I walked in for an ordinary, run of the mill Thai massage. I found much, much more. I don't want to jinx it and say this so early but I think I might have found my soul mate 😊
It's a bit strange but they let you choose the massage artist here, the business must be finding its feet because they could only employ young girls with barely any massage experience but WOW! What they lack in qualifications they more than make up for in enthusiasm, tenderness and caring!
The massage artist I selected could barely speak English but she seem to understand me in ways my ex-wife never could. After a somewhat relaxing massage (she's still learning), we exchanged a few words and we must have had a real connection because she offered to do something for me which I haven't experienced in a long, long time.
I had to pay extra for this additional service which is understandable due to taking up the businesses time, but it was well worth paying the extra to hang out with Suki for just a little longer.
Suki, if you are reading this, I just want you to know what we experienced together has given me the strength to live, and I'll be seeing you soon. Also, no need to be so.shy anymore you don't need to be on your phone so much there while we are sharing the experience, 5 stars in any case.
Our local guide DV has a word to the camel drivers on the hill.
Pictures from the Great Northern Desert of Rajasthan, a place where the air crackles with heat and hope, where life is hard but the nights are magic. It's a place where, in the late afternoon, watching some men and their camels on the crest of a sandy hill, you can contemplate the rugged beauty of the land, and feel the expansive quietness – even while taking hundreds of pictures.

Here's one more stock use. This time by Google for their Local Guides Summit last month in San Francisco.

When you see this sign you park on road (N21) and can take one of the local guides to show you where the pools are and hear the background of the area.
The guide I had spoke mostly French, very little English.
We took a taxi to the Northeast coast of Ile Saint Marie to see the Piscine Naturelle which is three sacred pools formed by large basalt rocks where the beach meets the Indian Ocean.
From town (Ambodifotatra), it is about a 2 hour drive up the West coast on a recently completed paved road (N21) - one of the nicest roads in all of Madagascar. Along the way you pass beautiful deserted beaches, small waterfalls, streams, villages and an old lighthouse.
When you arrive (there is a sign for Piscine Naturelle and village of Ambodiatafana), a local guide will walk you about 1/4 mile on a sandy trail to the beach. You then walk up the beach about another 1/4 mile (past a small restaurant/lunch area) to the three natural pools. Before reaching the pools, the guide tells you to take your shoes off because the pools are sacred - if you have tender feet like me, walk slowly, as the lava rocks are rough. There is also a place in the rocks to place a money offering to the gods/spirits - so take some small coins or bills (100 AR).
The pools are really calm and beautiful with huge basalt rocks breaking the waves to form the pools. Its very scenic so make sure you bring your camera. You can swim in the pools if you want.
The guide works only on tips so I gave him about 10,000 AR (about $5 USD).
Afterwards, you can either walk back to car/taxi or have lunch on the beach. The "restaurant" is run by the local village. You can eat fresh fish, chicken or Zebu. My wife and I had fish in a red sauce (delicious) - it was a full fish with head and bones. You can also have it with rice, marinated salad (cabbage?) and chips (French fries). They have several choices for drinks - water, beer (THB), etc. Two fish lunches with all the side dishes and a water and THB was about 40K Ariary (about $20 USD).
As with most places in Madagascar, they only take cash in Ariary (MGA).
On a nice day, this is an incredible 1/2 or full day trip and you won't regret it. It was the highlight of our trip to the island. The taxi we booked with our hotel was about 150,000 Ariary (about $50 USD) for the whole day. The taxis are pretty beat up but it is all part of the experience.
Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

This was without a doubt the best day of our trip. We went out with Einar and his son from Öræfaferðir / Local Guide Travel Service. They were both amazing, and we would highly recommend their services! Please feel free to check out the link below for more information.
For our third stop, we joined up with Einar's son and another group to head into another ice cave on Vatnajökull Glacier, about 15 minutes away from the first one. This cave had two floors! We had to do a small rappel about 8 feet down to get to the bottom floor.
Pictured here is my lovely wife in a clever nook she found in the cave. She is a nurse, so she thought it looked like an MRI machine and just had to crawl in. This is a wide angle lens so she is only about 2 feet away from the camera here.
Being in these caves was unlike anything we've ever experienced. They were well insulated so it wasn't extremely cold, but the textures and formations were completely otherworldly. The ice will often take on a rich, deep blue color in these caves. However, we were told that because it was a bright and sunny day, that blue became more of the aqua/teal type color you see here.
Interestingly, due to the constant changing of the glaciers and temperature changes, these ice caves are rarely ever around for more than a couple of weeks at a time. You can go back every year and have a completely different experience every time. We were told that the ice caves we enjoyed, for example, were gone within a week of our visit. This cave in particular, had partially collapsed the day before we entered it, so we only got to see about 2/3 of the cave they had intended on showing us.

One of the few leopards to have been named by local guides - this is Lucy. She is between 7 and 9 years old (no one knows for sure) and has previously raised a number of litters. This year she has two cubs each about 4 months old (as of November 2024). Both were active and alert climbing and play fighting with each other whilst Mum kept an alert vigil over her family. We were fortunate to have this family all to ourselves for about 30 minutes. A real privilege.
NOLA 2018 - Drunken History Tour
Do you want to take a tour of the French Quarter but don't want to stop partying long enough to do so? This experience might just be for you. Start your night off by joining a local guide for a visit to some of our city's most important destinations while sampling a few famous New Orleans cocktails. Our drunken history tour is a two hour, 21+ experience and it comes with one free drink included.
New Orleans and booze go together like Red Beans and Rice. We've been the party capital of the American South since before it was American or South. Around here we've figured out that just about anything can be enhanced with some (a lot) of alcohol. That's why we decided it was about time our visitors had the opportunity to stroll through the French Quarter, learning our history while simultaneously indulging in an age old New Orleans tradition (drink like a local).
This 21 and older experience isn't your ordinary walking tour. For one, the tour guide can, and will drink with you the whole time. Being a full walking tour of the French Quarter, you'll get the riveting stories and important knowledge necessary for a full understanding of our unique city, but thanks to the inclusion of alcohol and the characteristic lack of children, don't expect the guide to leave out any of the gruesome or sexy parts.
