DPRK, Sept 2011 (scanned slide)

This morning we set out early from Heliconia in a canoe, led by our local guide through tangles of submerged trees. Our target was a remote area that was suffciently large and above the Amazonian water level to be home to larger fauna. The water by the bank was shallow and from the point where we secured the boat we had some way to walk in ankle/calf high water. Even on the 'dry' land, the terrain remained damp and squelched underfoot as my boots sank through leaves into the earth or mud beneath. Among the fauna on our wish list were anacondas - ideally to be found resting in the pools. Otherwise they might be hiding under the fallen leaves waiting to catch a passing meal. I saw none in the pools. Nor was I attacked. The main fauna we encountered were monkeys, high up in the canopy. At ground level it was the flora that was interesting - curling lianas, red palm roots, weird fungus, and local fruit, often the discarded shells of fruit popular with the monkeys above. It was a hot, sweaty walk and we relished the air current on the canoe back.

In 2022, I returned to Colombia. The main purpose of this trip was to explore the Amazonian rainforest areas near Leticia and then on the Rio Negro. In 2007 I was in the Leticia area on a volunteering project and the 2022 trip gave me the chance to see more of the area.

As these are border areas, with the rivers travelled actually being the borders, I also visited / transitted through Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. I will create one master set / album for the entire six week trip, plus separate country albums to help viewers who are interested only in a specific country.

I also spent time in Bogota and in the Boyaca region. Overall intinerary: London - Leticia - Bogota - Villavincenzio - Rio Negro - Puerto Inirida - Bogota (incl Nemocon) - Villa de Leyva - Tunja - Bogota - London.

Carsten ten Brink is also a writer of fiction and nonfiction - for further information see www.carstentenbrink.com/Writing.html. There is a definite advantage to having a local guide - Martina led us up to a first floor cafe opposite the clock where we sat on a table with an open window to a great view of the clock.

We never would have been brave enough to go in by ourselves!

"Hayba "our Spontaneous local Guide and Friend wearing his traditional tribal costume of Marsa Matrouh, Egypt .Although a red round small hat is missing but still you can have an idea about the costume ,He reminds me with the movie "Lion of the desert " starred Anthony Quinn as "Omar Mukhtar " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_of_the_Desert

It was a steaming hot day on the private 1,600 acre Green Castle Estate in Jamaica. Other members of the group sensibly opted for the swimming pool after breakfast, but I had other ideas... The local guide, Dwayne, had told us about a near mythical bird in the rainforest - and I just had to give it a try.

I carried my camera with a 400mm lens and 2x extender in my left-hand and a sturdy tripod over my right shoulder. And with a litre of water in a small backpack I set off along the leafy Waterfall Trail for a kilometre to the spot where Dwayne had seen a pair of the birds. It had the forest to myself...

I set up my stall on the left side of the track and waited... and waited... and waited. After one hour, beads of sweat were stinging my eyes. After two hours, I had sipped the last drop of water. After three hours, I was ready to pack up and limp exhausted back to the comfort of the estate house and the pool.

As I was about to take the camera off the tripod, I noticed the leaves of a bush move about 30m along the track. I focused on the spot and to my delight a wonderful pair of beautiful Caribbean Doves, an endemic race on Jamaica, at last ventured into open ground.

At that precise moment, after waiting silently for 180 minutes in 90 degree heat, three jolly Germans came bounding around the corner from the waterfall direction towards me! To my horror, the doves flew off into the forest – never to be seen again.

I was mortified and speechless... I managed to take this single test shot before the doves fled. If you ever walk the Waterfall Trail, three small crosses mark the spot of this unforgettable encounter with one of Jamaica's most elusive birds...

Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is around 60 km south from the city of Chennai. It is an ancient historic town and was a bustling seaport during the time of Periplus (1st century CE) and Ptolemy (140 CE). Ancient Indian traders who went to countries of South East Asia sailed from the seaport of Mahabalipuram.

By the 7th century it was a port city of South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas. It has a group of sanctuaries, which was carved out of rock along the Coromandel coast in the 7th and 8th centuries : rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), giant open-air rock reliefs such as the famous Descent of the Ganges, and the Shore Temple, with thousands of sculptures to the glory of Shiva. The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It has an average elevation of 12 metres. The modern city of Mahabalipuram was established by the British Raj in 1827.

CLIMATE

This city has a tropical climate. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is Aw. The average annual temperature in Mahabalipuram is 28.4 °C. In a year, the average rainfall is 1219 mm.The temperatures are highest on average in May, at around 32.6 °C. In January, the average temperature is 24.3 °C. It is the lowest average temperature of the whole year. The variation in the precipitation between the driest and wettest months is 309 mm. The average temperatures vary during the year by 8.3 °C.

HISTORY

Megalithic burial urn, cairn circles and jars with burials dating to the very dawn of the Christian era have been discovered near Mahabalipuram. The Sangam age poem Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai relates the rule of King Thondaiman Ilam Thiraiyar at Kanchipuram of the Tondai Nadu port Nirppeyyaru which scholars identify with the present-day Mahabalipuram. Chinese coins and Roman coins of Theodosius I in the 4th century CE have been found at Mahabalipuram revealing the port as an active hub of global trade in the late classical period. Two Pallava coins bearing legends read as Srihari and Srinidhi have been found at Mahabalipuram. The Pallava kings ruled Mahabalipuram from Kanchipuram; the capital of the Pallava dynasty from the 3rd century to 9th century CE, and used the port to launch trade and diplomatic missions to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.

An 8th-century Tamil text written by Thirumangai Alvar described this place as Sea Mountain ‘where the ships rode at anchor bent to the point of breaking laden as they were with wealth, big trunked elephants and gems of nine varieties in heaps’. It is also known by several other names such as Mamallapattana and Mamallapuram. Another name by which Mahabalipuram has been known to mariners, at least since Marco Polo’s time is "Seven Pagodas" alluding to the Seven Pagodas of Mahabalipuram that stood on the shore, of which one, the Shore Temple, survives.

The temples of Mahabalipuram, portraying events described in the Mahabharata, were built largely during the reigns of Narasimhavarman and his successor Rajasimhavarman and show the movement from rock-cut architecture to structural building. The city of Mahabalipuram was largely developed by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century AD. The mandapa or pavilions and the rathas or shrines shaped as temple chariots are hewn from the granite rock face, while the famed Shore Temple, erected half a century later, is built from dressed stone. What makes Mahabalipuram so culturally resonant are the influences it absorbs and disseminates. The Shore Temple includes many reliefs, including one 100 ft. long and 45 ft. high, carved out of granite.

All but one of the rathas from the first phase of Pallava architecture are modeled on the Buddhist viharas or monasteries and chaitya halls with several cells arranged around a courtyard. Art historian Percy Brown, in fact, traces the possible roots of the Pallava Mandapa to the similar rock-cut caves of Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves. Referring to Narasimhavarman's victory in AD 642 over the Chalukyan king Pulakesin II, Brown says the Pallava king may have brought the sculptors and artisans back to Kanchi and Mahabalipuram as 'spoils of war'.

The fact that different shrines were dedicated to different deities is evidence of an increased sectarianism at the time of their construction. A rock relief on a sculpted cliff has an image of Shiva and a shrine dedicated to Vishnu, indicating the growing importance of these Sangam period deities and a weakening of the roles of Vedic gods such as Indra and Soma.

According to local guides, the site's name changed during the centuries. The first name was Kațalmalai meaning "The land between the mountain and the sea" in Tamil. The second name was Mämalläpuram meaning "The land of the great wrestler" as the region was ruled by the Pallavan King Narsimhavarman during the 8th century who was known for his strength. The third name was and is still there is Mähäbalipuram meaning "The land of Mahabali". According to legends, he was the grandson of the devoted Prahlada.

TRANSPORT

MTC and TNSTC (Villupuram) Kanchipuram division buses are operating bus from Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Thiruttani etc. Apart from TNSTC MTC operating buses to Mahabalipuram from various parts of the city with Deluxe and Air conditioned Deluxe buses

LANDMARKS

The monuments are mostly rock-cut and monolithic, and constitute the early stages of Dravidian architecture where in Buddhist elements of design are prominently visible. They are constituted by cave temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), sculpted reliefs and structural temples. The pillars are of the Dravidian order. The sculptures are excellent examples of Pallava art. They are located in the side of the cliffs near India's Bay of Bengal.

It is believed by some that this area served as a school for young sculptors. The different sculptures, some half finished, may have been examples of different styles of architecture, probably demonstrated by instructors and practiced on by young students. This can be seen in the Pancha Rathas where each Ratha is sculpted in a different style. These five Rathas were all carved out of a single piece of granite in situ. While excavating Khajuraho, Alex Evans, a stonemason and sculptor, recreated a stone sculpture made out of sandstone, which is softer than granite, under 4 feet that took about 60 days to carve. The carving at Mahabalipuram must have required hundreds of highly skilled sculptors.

In 2004 the Indian Ocean Tsunami washed away tons of coastal sand exposing structures including a granite lion and an elephant relief.

SOME IMPORTANT STRUCTURES

Thirukadalmallai, the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It was also built by Pallava King in order to safeguard the sculptures from the ocean. It is told that after building this temple, the remaining architecture was preserved and was not corroded by sea.

Descent of the Ganges or Bagiratha's Penance – a giant open-air rock relief

Varaha Cave Temple – a small rock-cut temple dating back to the 7th century.

The Shore Temple – a structural temple along the Bay of Bengal with the entrance from the western side away from the sea. Recent excavations have revealed new structures here.

Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots) – five monolithic pyramidal structures named after the Pandavas (Arjuna, Bhima, Yudhishtra, Nakula and Sahadeva) and Draupadi. An interesting aspect of the rathas is that, despite their sizes they are not assembled – each of these is carved from one single large piece of stone.

Mahabalipuram has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 66%. In Mahabalipuram, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

WIKIPEDIA

Akaki is a local guide who told me so much about Tbilisi and Georgia. He is very proud of his Soviet tour vehicle which is actually in a perfect condition! He was very eager to pose in front of Tbilisi's Metekhi Church.

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

The road from Najran to Abha and back follows the border with Yemen about 20 to 30 kilometers to the north. Information about the area is difficult to come by, as it has been an area of raids from Yemen and where people are not encouraged to go.We were looking for the area of Tihama, closer to the Yemeni border and made a few turns off to the right following the roads along the wadis to picturesque villages with the beautiful traditional houses but we could just not find Tihama. In one place, whioch seemd quite empty, we were hailed by Mesfin who asked us to stop and have a look around a take photos of him and his friends and his sheep. He finally gave us the info we needed about how to find Tihama. It was late ion the day and as it happened, we could not get all the way there but have a good idea how to gte there for the next time. It would have been useful to have found a local guide and we had tried, but that is easier said than done. There is a chance that we will be back next month and also that chance that we can find a local guide to intermediate with the local people of Tihama.

I spoke to my Dad this evening and he had never been in this exact area, having spent more time in Yemen itself or along the coastal region of Saudi Arabia, so was interested in my stories. Nice to continue the family tradition in the area,

Tour guides accompany tourists at the Devil's Pool of Victoria Falls.

This brave lady might think twice if she had read the following story:

DEATH IN THE ANGEL'S ARMCHAIR (MOSI OA TUNYA)

by: PABLOREMOS

I lost a dear family friend in August 2011 atop the great falls, in the Angel's Armchair (a similar spot to the Devil's Pool. We had a local guide who offered to take us to the secluded pool at the edsge of the falls. It was a fateful trek across the edge of the Zambezi. Three of us went hand in hand and only two of us returned. Our Zemba dived into the pool from a cliff above the pool, copying the guide who showed us what we could do if we so wished. I chose not to. I filmed Zemba as he elected to live in the moment... Heartbreaking.

Kankrajhor

Kankrajhor is a beautiful tourist destination of Jangalmahal Circuit in West Bengal, India. It is situated in the tropical, hilly forestlands of Jhargram district. It comprises 9000 hectares of hardwood forests. The wealth of trees includes Kusum (Ceylon oak), Shaal (Shorea robusta), Segun (Tectona grandis), Mahua (Indian Butter tree, or honey tree- Madhuca longifolia ), Piyal (almondette or calumpong nut, ) and Akashmani (Acacia auriculiformis), as named in Bengali. Its tribal villages at the edge of forests and ethnic people will make you feel a happy stay. Kankrajhor is just 22km from Ghatshila (Jharkhand) & 65 km from Jhargram town.

Beyond the fertile Gangetic plains of Bengal, Jhargram offers the most exotic undulating topography culminating in hilly ranges of Belpahari, Kankrajhor in the north to the serene and meandering Subarnarekha River in the south. Nearby famous Dolma Hills are frequented by animals from Bihar, including tigers, leopards and elephants. Bears and wild boars are frequently found in the hills in search of Mahua flower sap. The sap is a potent intoxicant in the region and is used to make country liquor, simply called Mahua. This is a regular corridor of elephants. They are very much fond of this Mohua flowers and get intoxicated...a pleasure to watch in a full moon night. Every year at this time of month elephants frequently enter into these villages and spoil the crops.

It is a favourite destination for people who love forests and tranquillity. Its exquisite forestry, ancient temples, native folk cultural and tribal dances, makes it an extremely attractive destination for tourists who love yet unspoiled nature and her people of the soil on the face of earth.

How to Reach Kankrajhor-Belpahari:

By Train: The distance from Howrah to Jhargram station is 157 Kms and the journey takes three hours by train from Howrah.

By Road: Jhargram is also very well connected by highways with other nearby cities like Medinipur, Kharagpur, Durgapur, Bankura, Purulia, and Kolkata.

Personal experience

In the first week of April, this year, we suddenly planned to go to Kankrajhor, in the district of Jhargram, West Bengal, India. We drove straight from Kolkata to Jhargram, and then another 60km drive to the heart of Kankrajhor. Our destination was a private cottage with very basic arrangements situated in a small tribal village, on the edge of the forests. This time of a year it was little bit late to enjoy the dazzling blooms of Palash, described as “Flames of the Forests” (Butea monosperma). But this was a right time to cherish the beauty of Shaal-Piyal-Mohua trees everywhere. The green new leaves, sweet intoxicating fragrance of Mohua flowers and the extreme business of the wild bees and birds, will always remind you the youthfulness of a spring. The red lateritic forest floor is an experience to walk on. While walking on its undulated trails through forests you will hear only the relentless chirping of birds and murmurs of dry leaves being moved by frequent gust of cold breezes. Such ambiance in an afternoon will surely make you intoxicated and drowsy, free of all wiriness and stresses of busy urban life, and will help you enter into a peaceful siesta. One may arrange tribal dances amidst this forest, their native home. Their beating of drums, and the indigenous harmony of dances will make you fallen in love with this place. I’m sure. With the sunset the whole surroundings suddenly turn into a mystical darkness. Far from the distance sitting in the hut you may hear the intermittent sounds of nocturnal birds, hyenas, jackals and foxes.

The dinner is very simple. Country chicken and rice is a luxury here. We had the wonderful taste of its country liquor made from Mohua flowers (Madhuca longifolia). It was a wonderful experience for all of us.

Simple and beautiful tribal people there, basic stay with optimal standard and simple healthy food, unspoiled nature, tranquillity, and serenity...all will definitely make you feel... “How much we need to be happy?” Really?
