One of 3 images taken of the pictographs in Worthington Bay, Ontario. The site is near Terrace Bay, a small town on the northern shore of Lake Superior. There was a reference to pictographs here in some of the local guides, but nothing really specific--generally hike to Worthington Bay along the Casque Isle Trail, and there are pictographs near the beach. We elected to Kayak to the bay, and when we arrived we could not find anything. When we were about to give up, a friendly local man walked out of the woods and introduced himself as the former president of the Casque Isle Trail Hiking Club--what luck. He pointed to a rock, and then noted that the pictographs were buried in sand (I guess this is a usual occurrence). We dug them out with a small plastic food container, and after much digging there they were.

The Anishinaabe pictographs feature what look to be a Thunder Bird image, waves, a spiral, and a faded man figure and possibly a goose figure. It is a very cool spot, but one that might easily be lost soon as Lake Superior is just a few yards away.

NOLA 2018 - Drunken History Tour

Do you want to take a tour of the French Quarter but don't want to stop partying long enough to do so? This experience might just be for you. Start your night off by joining a local guide for a visit to some of our city's most important destinations while sampling a few famous New Orleans cocktails. Our drunken history tour is a two hour, 21+ experience and it comes with one free drink included.

New Orleans and booze go together like Red Beans and Rice. We've been the party capital of the American South since before it was American or South. Around here we've figured out that just about anything can be enhanced with some (a lot) of alcohol. That's why we decided it was about time our visitors had the opportunity to stroll through the French Quarter, learning our history while simultaneously indulging in an age old New Orleans tradition (drink like a local).

This 21 and older experience isn't your ordinary walking tour. For one, the tour guide can, and will drink with you the whole time. Being a full walking tour of the French Quarter, you'll get the riveting stories and important knowledge necessary for a full understanding of our unique city, but thanks to the inclusion of alcohol and the characteristic lack of children, don't expect the guide to leave out any of the gruesome or sexy parts.

Morecambe Bay is a large estuary in northwest England, just to the south of the Lake District National Park. It is the largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sand in the United Kingdom, covering a total area of 310 km2 (120 sq mi). In 1974, the second largest gas field in the UK was discovered 25 miles (40 km) west of Blackpool, with original reserves of over 7 trillion cubic feet (tcf) (200 billion cubic metres). At its peak, 15% of Britain's gas supply came from the bay but production is now in decline. It also one of the homes of the High brown fritillary.

The rivers Leven, Kent, Keer, Lune and Wyre drain into the Bay, with their various estuaries making a number of peninsulas within the bay. Much of the land around the bay is reclaimed, forming salt marshes used in agriculture. Morecambe Bay is also an important wildlife site, with abundant bird life and varied marine habitats, and there is a bird observatory at Walney Island. The bay has rich cockle beds, which have been fished by locals for generations.

There are seven main islands in the bay, all to the north; Walney, Barrow, Sheep, Piel, Chapel, Foulney and Roa. Walney is substantially larger than the others, with its southern tip marking the north-western corner of the Bay. Sheep, Piel, Chapel and Foulney Islands are tidal and can be walked to at low tide with appropriate care. Local guidance should be sought if walking to Chapel or Piel islands as fast tides and quicksand can be extremely dangerous. Roa Island is linked to the mainland by a causeway, while Barrow Island has been connected to the mainland as part of the docks system at Barrow-in-Furness.

There have been royally appointed local guides (holding the post of Queen's Guide to the Sands) for crossing the bay for centuries. This difficulty of crossing the bay added to the isolation of the land to its north which, due to the presence of the mountains of the Lake District, could only be reached by crossing these sands or by ferry, until the Furness Railway was built in 1857. This skirts the edge of the bay, crossing the various estuaries. The London-Glasgow railway also briefly runs alongside the bay - the only place where the West Coast Main Line actually runs alongside the coast.

The bay is notorious for its quicksand and fast moving tides. On the night of 5 February 2004, at least 21 Chinese immigrant cockle pickers drowned after being cut off by the tides. This tragedy led some commentators to suggest that the cockle beds should be closed until improved safety measures could be introduced.

Ifaty-Mangily is a village about 30 km north of Toliara (Tuléar) in southwest Madagascar. Ifaty was originally a pure fishing village, but due to its favourable location directly in front of a coral reef and its proximity to Toliara, the first tourist infrastructure developed in the 1970s: the beginning of Mangily. Today, both terms are often used synonymously, although they are actually still two independent but very close villages.

On the sandy beaches of the bay of Ranobe (translated “big water”) on the canal of Mozambique, travellers have a good opportunity to relax and unwind. The water is warm and the sun shines here more than 300 days a year. Ifaty has a number of well-equipped hotels and lodges for excursions with the zebu carts (Charettes), crayfish dinners, pirogue excursions or visits to the nearby Reniala reserve and the turtle village. Due to the unfortunately unfavourable security situation in the south of Madagascar, the spiny forests of the surrounding area should not be explored alone, and it is also advisable to always be on the road with local guides.

Diving schools in Ifaty offer guided dives along various parts of the coral reef, equipment can be hired on site. For beginners to experienced divers there are many possibilities to explore the sea and its colourful inhabitants. In some places, travellers even have the unique opportunity to get in touch with sharks under water. If you are not quite so brave or simply not a diver, you will find just as good opportunities for snorkeling. In August, with a bit of luck, you might even see whales passing the coast. The road to Ifaty was paved in 2016, it now takes just 20 minutes via the Route Nationale (RN9) from Toliara to Ifaty-Mangily.

www.madamagazine.com/en/strande-von-ifaty/

Ingólfshöfði is a nature reserve that's home to thousands of nesting sea-birds, like puffins and great skuas. This birdwatching tour was taken with the group Local Guide, which hauls people across a massive black sand beach in a hay cart to reach the cliffs where the birds live.

PUERTO GALERA, ORIENTAL MINDORO, PHILIPPINES

This coastal town is well known among tourists for its numerous pocket beaches and many snorkeling and diving spots. The area was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 1973 and has some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia. The marine environment has benefited in recent years from the influx of tourist dollars. This has seen a huge reduction in the number of fishermen in the area, as they gain higher revenue from tourists.

Among the famous beaches in Puerto Galera are Sabang Beach and White Beach. Both have extensive beaches with first-class or economy-class accommodations and an active night life with their numerous beach-side bars and restaurants. Sabang beach is the main destination for foreign tourists, while White Beach remains popular with local travelers. Since 2001 White beach has seen uncontrolled development. New restaurants and places to stay are rapidly encroaching on the beach itself and little remains of the once charming beach. Puerto Galera town is a pleasant but sleepy Philippine town with few attractions. It has a large central catholic church and a Pier area, with a selection of bistros and cafes.

Behind the beaches are the huge and generally unexplored mountain ranges of central Mindoro. A particular local attraction is the nine hole golf course perched on the hillside above White Beach which commands spectacular views over Puerto Galera's natural harbor and the Verde Island Passage. Mangyan tribes are scattered over the mountains sides - some of the more remote tribes have no contact with the outside world. Of the eight tribes on Mindoro, the Iraya are the largest. They are based in the Puerto Galera area.

Puerto Galera has become the top diving destination in the Philippines. Excellent diving is found less than 5 minutes from the Sabang area. The diving generally focuses around the areas either side of Escarceo Point which is famous for its current rips. Strong currents are a feature of the diving in Puerto Galera and it is good advice to employ the services of an experienced local guide or dive centre. There are upwards of thirty dive sites all within a 5-10 minute banca ride from Sabang Beach. Marine life is highly diverse. 180+ species of nudibranchs are found in the area and most species of fish can be seen A variety of wrecks have been sunk over the years in addition to the one genuine wreck of an engine of a WWII Japanese patrol boat.

Puerto Galera is also one of the main [technical diving]destinations in Asia. Technical Diving International - [TDI] has many dive centers in the area, offering the full range of TDI courses from Basic [nitrox] to advanced [trimix].

All the walls within the temple complex had a decoration, scene or deity carved on it. Sadly, the best works and walls were stolen, and any recovered portions can be found at the National Museum.

I’m of two minds about this process, whilst this site offers no protection, the site as a whole is diminished with the loss. Similarly, the National Museum has more scientific information than the local guide, but less visceral context.

One (count 'em, one)! Our local guide spotted this waterfall specialist naked-eye in deep shadow 40 meters away, fluttering while clinging to a crevice near Dos Hermanos falls. And she wasn't even a birding guide -- but she knew where the swifts hang out.

This morning we set out early from Heliconia in a canoe, led by our local guide through tangles of submerged trees. Our target was a remote area that was suffciently large and above the Amazonian water level to be home to larger fauna. The water by the bank was shallow and from the point where we secured the boat we had some way to walk in ankle/calf high water. Even on the 'dry' land, the terrain remained damp and squelched underfoot as my boots sank through leaves into the earth or mud beneath. Among the fauna on our wish list were anacondas - ideally to be found resting in the pools. Otherwise they might be hiding under the fallen leaves waiting to catch a passing meal. I saw none in the pools. Nor was I attacked. The main fauna we encountered were monkeys, high up in the canopy. At ground level it was the flora that was interesting - curling lianas, red palm roots, weird fungus, and local fruit, often the discarded shells of fruit popular with the monkeys above. It was a hot, sweaty walk and we relished the air current on the canoe back.

In 2022, I returned to Colombia. The main purpose of this trip was to explore the Amazonian rainforest areas near Leticia and then on the Rio Negro. In 2007 I was in the Leticia area on a volunteering project and the 2022 trip gave me the chance to see more of the area.

As these are border areas, with the rivers travelled actually being the borders, I also visited / transitted through Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. I will create one master set / album for the entire six week trip, plus separate country albums to help viewers who are interested only in a specific country.

I also spent time in Bogota and in the Boyaca region. Overall intinerary: London - Leticia - Bogota - Villavincenzio - Rio Negro - Puerto Inirida - Bogota (incl Nemocon) - Villa de Leyva - Tunja - Bogota - London.

Carsten ten Brink is also a writer of fiction and nonfiction - for further information see www.carstentenbrink.com/Writing.html. 'The Nicotine Solution,' a piece relating to his time in the Amazon in 2022, has appeared in the US publication The Write Launch - see thewritelaunch.com/2024/12/the-nicotine-solution/. It also features several of his photos.

The title of each photo in this series is a translated line from a poem found in the Chapel of Bones. See the full poem in the original language here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capela_dos_Ossos#Poem .

From our tour guide - the Franciscan monks who used the bones of approximately 5000 corpses, built this to send a message to the nobles that in death, no one can tell the difference between the rich and the poor, royal or common.

In 2010, about 10 million pilgrims travelled through the streets of Haridwar daily to bathe in the Ganges during the Kumbh Mela.
