The Carnock Burn has eroded the local sandstone to form an amazing gorge.
Much of this erosion would have taken place following
the end of the Ice-Age when melt-water surged in massive quantities.
In recent centuries the moist, humid, sheltered conditions
have created a green, moss, fern and tree-covered tunnel.
From above there is no evidence of a gorge, merely a line of mature trees.
However, in places this chasm reaches 70-100 feet in depth,
with near vertical cliffs on either side.
Local legend will often dramatise certain features.
Where the burn has created a vortex, stones have whirled in one place creating an eroded rounded bowl, likened to a seat,
and named “The Devil’s Pulpit.”
There are several waterfalls and rapids and patches of foaming water.
Little wonder it was used as a location-setting in “Outlander.”
It certainly has the qualities to be regarded as a “Gateway to Middle-Earth.”
However, apparently its popularity is leading to human erosion, danger and destruction.
Fences have been trampled, a myriad of unofficial paths created by random foot-fall.
Car-parking is sparse and inadequate.
Protective barriers and proper paths are non-existent.
In such a humid, sheltered eco-system the ground
stays wet, muddy and slippery and a fall into the gorge is likely to be fatal.
On numerous occasions Emergency Services have had to retrieve injured and stranded visitors.
The Land-Owner has promised a proper Visitor Centre,
official car-parks, properly constructed, signed paths and safety-barriers, but so far, people visit at their own risk and with zero facilities.
It is a wonderful place, but facilities must ensure safety, as an urgent priority.

On week days, Jimmy's Mart, located in Northeast Richland County, draws a diverse crowd of customers, from construction workers, students, and businessmen in suits. The combination gas station/restaurant/convenience store was here long before the suburban sprawl that now envelopes the area.

Pan Am Boston based local BO-1 is heading home running light engine on the Keolis/MBTA Eastern Route mainline after delivering 8 cars to Rousselot at the end of the South Reading Industrial Track in Peabody. They are passing through Central Square and the platforms of Lynn station at MP 11.5 on this mainline to Newburyport that once was a through route to Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME. While the route is busy with commuter trains the twice weekly passage of BO-1 is the only regular freight movement to ply the rails of the Eastern Route anymore.
The elevated right of way through Lynn was once four main tracks. Constructed between 1909 and 1914 it was part of a larger scheme to quadruple track the entire Eastern Route from Boston to Salem. This was during the era when the J. P. Morgan syndicate owned the New Haven and attempted to consolidate all transportation in New England. President Charles S. Mellen of the NH had grand designs to tunnel under Boston Harbor and use the B&M's Eastern as an extension of their shoreline main. But this was the "trust busting" era and Morgan's monopoly would not last and the four tracks through Lynn station where the only portion actually built along the Eastern. In the late 1950s the B&M removed the other two tracks here as traffic dwindled and then in 1992 the MBTA opened a new station and parking garage (where this was taken from) here that included a large center high level platform where the two middle tracks once ran.

SET 3 – Goodman/Getwell Kroger, Post-Remodel
Taking a more drawn-back view of the bakery, we see in the foreground a couple of low-height refrigerated cases full of deli goods, the right-hand one of which also features Kroger’s new “Discover Local” imaging. Not sure if that’s a chainwide thing or just a Delta Division thing, but it has popped up in just about every store I’ve been in in the last few years. I like it, even though it does look a tiny bit cheesy.
I talked over it in the last description, but if you flip back to that for a second, you’ll see that the extreme close-up of the “BAKERY” lettering allows us a really good look at the construction of the department signage for this décor package. Given the way décor pieces seem to be made these days, I’m not sure if that’s real wood or just wood-look material, but in particular the roughness of the sides of the letters as well as the unfinished (that is, not painted white) portions of the sign ledge really make me lean more towards it being the former – which is rather interesting, I think.

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
One of the few industries in the Livingston area is RY lumber. Usually they take two empty center beams in and take two loads out. The caboose is for the reverse move back to the yard.
“I can't believe they charge 20 bucks for the chair and 12 for the umbrella.”
”I know, and these tourists from Chicago actually fell for that, sheesh!“
“We've got our natural SPF 30 feathers right here and the beach to ourselves!”
”What can I say? People!“

This species is the loud one you hear at dusk that goes on and on and on. Which is where they get their name, sound like a scissor blade sharpener. This one was on my flowerpot.

Another first, Preston is the topic for the next lot of photos; the Lancashire city seeing both Rotala-owned Preston Bus and Stagecoach Merseyside & South Lancashire operating the lion-share of services.
Starting with Stagecoach, their Preston base have 3 Optare Versas in their fleet, all of them featuring the Local which suits the midi-bus much better compared to others across the company. The Optare Versas, fitted with MAN engines see regular use operating alongside Preston's fleet of Alexander Dennis Enviro200/Enviro300s.

I made an attempt to stop at the Lombard overview but my memory failed me so it was on to Logan. It turns out Logan was the better play, the local crew was just starting to build their train. The clouds were touch and go but there were plenty of sucker holes allowing for nice light on the power with a little waiting. September 6, 2023.
