S-m-i-l-e: some of the lovely people who have agreed to my request to be in my strangers' project and The Human Family.

posted for Smile on Saturday:ONE HUNDRED SMILES

This aspect of my photography gives me much pleasure. I was never concerned about approaching strangers in this way but some of my photographic 'associates' were themselves concerned for me.

.Naturally there are folk who do not wish to have their photo taken when approached by a stranger with a camera. But they are no more than 10% of my total to date and any refusals have been polite, often with a specific reason given.

The accompanying stories which I have requested have always been interesting, often amazing. Everyone has a story to tell:

a 97 year old recounting daring exploits in WW2

a lady garden volunteer with the National Trust

a Wildlife Trust volunteer describing the hazel dormouse

a concert pianist giving a recital in Chichester Cathedral

a French man running a B&B in England

a local TV presenter

a lay preacher in Salisbury Cathedral

an opera singer busking on the streets of Winchester

My portraiture is the most time-consuming part of all my photography: asking for and taking the photos; finding the story; remembering that story; later composing it at home on my laptop.

I find it hugely rewarding, especially when somebody who is self-deprecating about their 'photogenic quality', sees their photo on the rear camera screen and is so pleased.

I always offer photos by email and have often received very positive feedback.

Larry makes a few extra dollars doing handyman work, odd jobs and such. He also has an outdoor workshop in the alleyway beside his house. Looks like he works on bikes a lot.

Larry rides his gas-assisted bike, towing his trailer of supplies and tools, from jobsite to jobsite. I thought his bike would make a cool photo. Larry agreed. Just no portraits. "No F'ing Way!"

Awww.

Then I heard the latest news. It was in the newspaper.

Larry found a gold nugget in his front yard! Congrats Larry. That should help the budget. Thanks, Sir.

June 12, 2002 - Kearney Nebraska US

At least as long as I have lived here in Kearney and speaking with the local weather folks from our local tv station. It was by far the worst hail storm to ever hit Kearney Nebraska.

Hail stones over 5 inches in diameter slammed in to everything out in the open. My Neighbors roof, car and swimming pool were destroyed by these HUGE hail stones than pummeled the city of Kearney. Believe it or not... My house only had some damage to the siding... not as bad as my neighbors around me... Destruction to the city trees and everything else... lets just say it was nasty.

Jason Mraz has suddenly become popular in Australia because his song I'm Yours was used ad infinitum to promote a local TV show. I have loved his music ever since his third single You And I Both. I couldn't find a link to a video for that song, so here's a link to his latest called Lucky which is pretty darn good too.

This is my first attempt at a refraction shot. I was quite pleased with it.

View On Black

The Brewer's blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus) is a medium-sized New World blackbird. It is named after the ornithologist Thomas Mayo Brewer. No real sense in a description 'cause you can see one very ticked-off male right here.

If you live in a city or town, walking down a tree lined street minding your own business, and all of a sudden you are "attacked" by a black bird, you have been told by a Brewer's Blackbird that you are too close to its nest.

I found this particular male at Old Borges Ranch on Mt. Diablo. It was just after mating, and there was obviously a nest nearby. But I was 30 feet from him. What did he want from me? Didn't matter because what I wanted from him was THIS pose. Three weeks before, I had seen a male displaying. They spread their wings, rock from side-to-side, and SCREAM (in a way that only a Brewer's Blackbird).

If you watched the news in April or May in the last 40 years (well, I don't know about the last five when I gave up on local TV), you were guaranteed to have every station show a BB bombarding passersby. Ah, but now you have You Tube.

This Snap-On Tools truck was parked on my street so I took some pics. Looks like the style of the artist Big Daddy Ed Roth. This is actually by artist Dirty Donny Gillies.

12th January 2020.

Another Supermoon picture from Sunday evening which I sent up to BBC South Today and appeared Monday evening on the local TV News as one of 3 Weather Pictures on the News

This was taken about 5 minutes before the previous one with the Cyclist. Here the moon has risen just above the Pier. It was also taken from a different viewpoint a little closer to the promenade. I was taking a lot of shots and the people walking on the pier were ideal having the decency to arrange themselves in a Photographers group of 3. The picture gained a lot of interest on the South Today Facebook pages with 415 Likes and 185 Shares. See www.facebook.com/BBCSouthToday/photos/a.1192497467507508.... Interestingly some locals didn’t recognise it as Bognor Regis Pier because of the compression effect of a zoom at 250mm which because of the smaller sensor, for 35mm would equate to 375mm. The line of 6 poles on the beach to the left of the picture are actually about 300ft apart at the end of groynes. The line of 4 mounds in the distance are the sea defence rocks at the village of Elmer about 2 miles away

A Supermoon happens when a full moon is closest to Earth. It orbits our planet in an oval shape so sometimes it comes closer to us than at other times. The moon appears 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent bigger. Supermoons happen through the year but this one is special because it is the closest and largest apparent size in 70 years. Strictly the Supermoon was on Monday but with a poor weather forecast the rest of the week I decided to go for it on Sunday. A day either side makes little difference to the apparent size. The supermoon only technically occurs on a Full Moon and Sunday was short of full moon by 2%.

The clear skies and timing with moonrise being close to sunset make ideal conditions for mixing scenery with the moon without too much difference in exposure. A check of the Photographers Ephemeris website also revealed that the moonrise lined up perfectly with the local pier when viewed from the west. It was also close to low tide.

The picture was taken with a tripod with a Sony A550 with a Minolta 75-300 zoom at 250mm. Processing was limited to adjustments in RAW and Topaz Clarity was also used.

Have been following a series of the gangster era and prohibition. from 1920's to early 1930's. It is known

that gangsters like Al Capone, Bugsy Malone ( Bugs Moran)

and other gangsters often spent time in Minnesota up

by Iron Range and areas of woodlands that had low population and woods. They even were sighted in and near Bemidji, Mn. where I went to college. They were known to have secretly shown up in Fargo and other areas in N. Dakota.

Tracy B former local newscaster has a podcast and plans to write a book on the gangster era. She often has articles in

the Fargo newspaper on her findings or appears on local TV shows.

First I edited this as a B&W and soon after I changed my mind and replaced the B&W here with my colour version. That's much better.

By the way, the doomsday clock has moved again. The clock was last moved in 2020, when it was set to 100 seconds to midnight, the first time it moved past the two minute mark since its creation in 1947. It was recently moved again to 90 seconds to midnight.

No one knows the size of the iceberg which collided with the Titanic on April 14, 100 years ago. This is one I shot in the North Atlantic off the coast of Newfoundland a couple of years ago. Most of the berg is below the surface. The Titanic didn't have a chance...

how serendipitous-- one of the local TV stations announced that today is national coffee day-- really!!

Pohoiki, Big Island of Hawaii 8/10/09. One thing I really noticed is the color changes of the water as the clouds moved over and/or sun came out. Drastic color changes today. I was really far from this guy and did not have my tripod on this shot because of the big rocks I was on in this area. If I continue shooting surf shots, it's very obvious I need a long lens and that will have to wait until next year or later.

I submitted my photos to two local TV stations...KGMB9 used a couple of them on the 5 pm news.

BTW...sea spray is not good for cameras. You can't imagine how many times I had to take out my battery and "reboot' the camera, not to mention other problems. Was it worth it...hell yeah!

From Portage Inlet Linear Connector Park

N.B. Local TV CHEK News showed a photo of this scene the very day I took this photo. Life imitating art.

Spent some time today at Carvin's Cove in Roanoke,Va. The reservoir is full up with the recent rains and snow and the clouds were good.

Although the weather service and local tv stations disagree... I stand by my prediction of a major snowstorm here on Wednesday :-D!

Three shot HDR.

First, I am absolutely not an expert on birds, so I may be wrong about what I write later below. However, I am pretty sure these are common white storks (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_stork).

They were feeding at dusk in a local pasture. *

Here in northwest Switzerland, we are used to seeing them arrive back from Africa in late March or early April. Their spring arrival is of course the source of old European tales of storks bringing babies in spring.

In contrast to the norm, these storks (photographed locally) either did not migrate or came back very early this year (mid February). We did hear on the local TV news claims that some storks were now staying here for the winter.

If anyone knows more, please tell us.

* FWIW - Storks are carnivores. They eat insects, frogs, reptiles, fish, small birds and small mammals. I am guessing they were eating insects in this pasture.

Among lots of other things (she writes books and has her own televison show on a local Tv station) Metje Blaak is press adviser of "De Rode Draad" (The Red Thread)

The Red Thread (De Rode Draad) is a support and advocacy association for prostitutes that was founded in 1985 and works for the legitimization and against the stigmatization of prostitutes. Prostitution was defined a legal profession in January 1988.

On a road trip through Central Iowa, we heard on the local TV news, at night in our hotel, that there was a balloon festival with daily morning launches in the area. Up we get at 5 am the next morning, and off to Indianola for the National Balloon Classic. It was a fun and beautiful morning!

I heard about this roadside find located near Ossian on one of the local TV stations. The segment showed visitors posing with him, but apparently that has run it's course as the property is now off limits. It's probably not going to slow down either, as it is now geotagged on Google maps.

Photos can be taken from the roadway.

My phone was able to get a signal and the app "My Elevation" reported that this first viewpoint was at 2004 feet. The view is looking west and the lowest notch in the hills offers a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean through the haze.

Yesterday we had what the local TV weatherman called a "bonus day of sunshine" when we were scheduled for nothing but clouds as a prelude to rain. The rain is still coming, but apparently decided to take the scenic route and will be arriving later. On a whim, I loaded Mom in the car and we went exploring somewhere we hadn't been before. The scenic drive was inspired after reading a recent blog by a local photog about her exploration of this new-to-her area. It was new to me as well and the sky was clear enough for some good views.

Vieira de Castro tunnel

Built started in the 1920's but it was abandoned in 1929 and never finished. It was for many years abandoned and totally forgotten until it was found last year. Finally i managed to visit this pretty interesting tunnel.

It is located in the Rabaçal valley more or less beneath the other old but well known Estreberias tunnel.

Because it was never finished there is no exit but it's 200 m long and it's full of water, 1 meter deep it seems.

The tunnel is quite big, i think a bus would made it inside. And surprisingly the walls and ceiling are in excellent condition, it almost looks brand new (except for the mould inside):

If someday you would like to pay a visit here is the location:

pt.wikiloc.com/trilhas-trekking/ponto-tunel-das-estrebari...

The trail is in good condition (for someone with experience). Just at the end near the tunnel is a bit tricky.

60029 Ben Nevis approaches Middle Drove level crossing west of March, working 6Z30 12.15 Brandon Down Goods Loop - Chaddesden Sidings empty stone boxes. [Pole, 6/6 sections (~8m)]

This was my first sunny picture since the last week of October, as a result of being at work a lot and poor weather when I wasn't (mostly weekends). And I was only out today because, in an attempt to reduce the risk of being exposed to the Omicron variant of COVID-19, I decided not to work on the last two days of the school term.

The weather forecast for today had not initially been good. However, BBC Look East the previous evening suggested that the cloud would clear south-westwards from the Norfolk coast, and that it would reach the Fens by early afternoon. But the Met Office website - usually more realistic than BBC local TV - still only showed any chance of sun close to the coast; however, it changed to match the local BBC forecast in the middle of the morning - and the Sat24 cloud maps confirmed the clearance was moving the right way, and faster than I'd expected.

A quick check of Realtime Trains just after 11am showed there was a Worksop - Ely working on its way, a ROG 37 dragging a second off-lease Southeastern class 465 "Networker" EMU. This was due at Manea at 12.35 (although was, at the time, running a little late), and the Met Office was suggesting the cloud would have cleared there by noon. RTT also showed this DCR working going the other way, forty minutes later. So I planned to do the EMU drag at Welney Road at Manea, and then head to the other side of March for the DCR 60 from Brandon.

In the event, the EMU drag made up time and ended up passing Manea seven minutes early; however, although I'd driven through some lovely winter sunshine on my way to Manea, there was a patch of very slow moving cloud ahead of the complete clearance, and the train passed in dull conditions. But it looked like it would clear for the 60, and I headed west, to somewhere the sun was on the front of the train. The sky was indeed completely clear at March, but as I drove further west towards the Turves / Three Horse Shoes / Beggars' Bridge area, I realised it was on the edge of some broken cloud. With a risk I'd not get the shot in sun, I turned back and went to this spot much closer to March - a location I'd not used before, as it involves walking down the edge of a field and you are stood at a slightly lower level than the track: from ground level the wheels of the train are not visible, so you need a reasonable amount of elevation (more than step ladders). As it was a very calm day, I comfortably extended the pole to its full height. At a late stage, I realised I could include the wind turbine on the right (and if the shot didn't look right, crop it out), but I didn't have time to experiment with standing slightly to the right.

When the train actually passed, it looked like the clouds would have cleared the sun at Beggars' Bridge, and I later discovered that this was the case. But I then went there to do the following two GBRf intermodals, only to have another slow-moving cloud appear in front of the sun. So the DCR 60 was the only train I photographed in sun today!

leading edge seen on left. turned out we never got a drop of rain. And we are under drought conditions right now.

This was sent to the local TV weather report in honor of my father who passed away July 16 this year. He and I used to sit for hours and watch the clouds float by on a summer's day.

Not the photo I had in mine to finish the 365, but it the weather was awful all day. Thick fog in the morning, followed by rain the rest of the day. We actually had to ride in the rain on the way back. Forecast was no rain until 5pm. We should have an inkling when the local TV weatherman who usually rides with this group didn’t show up.

I will be taking a break from doing a 365 this year instead concentrating on quality vs. quantity.

On a separate note I finished the year with 16,600km (10,300miles) on the bike

I used a low light setting here of ISO 1600 using my ancient digital Nikon D-40 on a tripod. I tried editing out the top left roof corner. Didn't look convincing. I put an edge filter on it instead and tried to bring out some details. That's better.

It's a hobby.

Memorial Day 1980 and I was in Green Bay and caught this pair on the ready tracks near the sand tower. Oddly the Alco has a lot more service than the GP35 on CNW. I used to wander the North Green Bay shop/roundhouse area without any trouble until a local TV station filmed the oil/fuel soaked area and the CNW received some bad publicity for it. After that it was shoot and run because someone would normally ask you to leave as soon as you were spotted.

Meet SL Photographer & Designer: Gwen Aloix

I have had the hardest time deciding which section this interview belongs in. That’s because Gwen Aloix is a jack of all trades! Her clothing line is beautifully made; she creates gorgeous skin; and lastly, but not the least, her photography makes you fall in love with your own avatar. As many of you, I check out Flickr streams often for either finding a new face on the scene to watch their development & growth, or established photographers who inspire us with their art and talent. I stumbled on Gwen’s Flickr about a year ago and was simply mesmerized by all work. I am not a fan of morph pictures - if I want an RL photograph, I will just make one. What I love about Gwen’s photography is that she makes the avatar come to life fully, without tricking us to think we are looking at a photograph from RL.

I was fortunate enough to find Gwen in between projects and with some time to spare so that I could introduce her to our readers. I arrived at Gwen’s studio a bit discombobulated because I was running late. She could not have been sweeter to put me at ease, and also help me prepare for the photo shoot. One reason I like to have a photo shoot as an interview session is that you get to experience the photographers in their element. Gwen was a joy, as you will read. Another reason, and perhaps a more important one, is that to have the same avatar photographed by different photographers makes their style more visible because you will be comparing apples to apples in a way. It also adds an element of fun to see how the deal with my often insane hairs.

Leda Carter: Thank you so much for your time, Gwen. I have told you before that I admire your work. Although, your flickr stream starts around 2012. Tell us about your photography journey.

Gwen Aloix: I have liked photography and drawing forever! I don’t remember when it was that I began to take pictures and edit them. I used to take photos of my Second Life friends, until one day someone recommended that I blog my work, so that everyone could see it. That’s when I created an account on flickr.

Leda: How did you find out about SL?

Gwen: My boyfriend introduced me to SL! I played the sims, but wanted something better, with online users where avatars could meet other people, chat and create a community. To be honest, at first, I was disappointed, because I did not know how it worked. Also, people thought I was an alt of someone, and would not help me. After four months, I decided to try again. I met a girl who was very nice, and introduced me to how I could enjoy SL. Today, I can say it has been better than my expectations.

Leda: Did you face particular challenges in becoming a pro photographer?

Gwen: Well, I really didn’t have challenges. I always did pictures for my friends, and people would ask them who made the picture. So, they started coming to me to do their photos, and along the way I gained more experience too.

When I started on Flickr, I saw many SL photographs. One of my main inspirations came from the work of Graphic-Dix! I was in love with all his pictures. It was what motivated me to want to learn more and more about image editing! I started watching tutorials, searching techniques and practicing, until I discovered my own style.

Leda: Yes, you certainly have your own style. Speaking of style, you have started your own clothing and skin line. How did that come about?

Gwen: With skins, it was something I had to learn, since I always wanted a custom skin, a unique face, but no one really did that. So, I had to learn so that I could have my avatar the way I wanted it. I looked for a tutorial online and started working on it! When my friends started asking me to make skins for them, I decide to open a store. It was basically the same thing with clothes!! *laughs*

Leda: Does that mean your designs reflect your personal taste?

Gwen: When I started to make clothes for my first store (called Lapin Rose), I just made things for me. I didn’t really care if everyone like it or not! *laughs* But, now with lowen, I do try to see what people are looking for, waiting for, and I try to make them but still in my own taste. If I don’t like something, I never make it.

Leda: Who is Gwen’s typist? Does she have fashion or photography experience?

Gwen: I am 22 years old and from Brazil, with Indian, Italian and German heritage. I have always been a curious person, and try to learn and do everything by myself. Oh, and my astrological sign is Cancer! *smiles*

I work as fashion producer & stylist for a local TV station here. I am the one they call to dress up actors and do their makeup when they are making TV commercials. In addition, I started learning to be a graphic designer, and today I do both of those things! I am very lucky to have the work I love to do. Like I said, I always love to draw, paint, do pictures, and all that. So, sometimes, when I have made a drawing, I put in PS and try to paint. In the beginning, I used to use a mouse, but the paint that comes with that is so horrible!

Anyways, I have worked with absolutely everything in the fashion world - from makeup artist to model. So, the life in SL is something I have always been involved with in RL.

Leda: What are some of the other things you enjoy about SL?

Gwen: I am a very shy person, and when I moved from my hometown, I felt a little lonely without my childhood friends. In SL, I have made some very good friends, and have met some of them in RL too! Besides the friendships I have formed, SL gives me the freedom to express myself, to create what I want, and that is really cool.

Leda: It is really cool! What is also cool is that you have shared yourself with us here. Thank you so much for your time. And, I have to tell you that I love seeing Leda through your eyes. That’s a beautiful piece of work! Thank you.

Luton 1/3

First visit to Luton for some years to see recent changes to the town centre. This includes a revamp of a cinema in George Street that has stood empty for a long time. Mural artist Sarah Hodgkins was commissioned to paint this in an Art Deco style depicting Luton’s past. Catching an interview with her on the local TV news I knew I had to go and see this for myself! Fabulous artwork that took her 16 days to complete and has really added colour and interest to the town centre…

Some other examples of the mural to follow but here I just like the contrast in fashions with the passers by. In the mural everyone wears a hat - Luton is famous for its hat industry - and also shown is a lovely Vauxhall car from a bygone era. Unfortunately the Vauxhall plant in Luton recently closed, putting an end to many years of car production in the town.

Completed in 1928, the Art Deco bldg is made famous from the local TV and Movie Studios

Last evening, these clouds appeared and soon afterwards, a fast and furious storm rolled through Collin County, Texas. Heavy rains and thousands of lightening strikes reported by local TV channels. And, no surprise, some power outages, but all was beautiful today.

Update! dallasnews.com's Capture Dallas chose this as their Photo of the Day for July 9th.

Afrikaans speaking South Africans will be familiar with the Soapie 7de Laan (7th Avenue) that has been running for years on local TV.

As soon as they "sel" enough airtime they will "by" some paint to finish painting the door on the left.....

The image has not been edited and what you see is what you get.

Just a little wave action captured the other day and made it onto my local tv weather slot . Now and again i will send they in. This one had a 13sec air time as it was used for the backdrop for the weather.

This shot, taken on a bit of a cloudy Tuesday from the City Botanic Gardens is looking across the Brisbane River to Kangaroo Point and the Story Bridge on the far left. For those Aussies and also some overseas countries (UK is one) who have been engrossed in the adventures of our local TV production "Harrow", lead dissector, Daniel Harrow, well known pathologist at the fictional Queensland Institute of Forensic Medicine, knows this reach of the river well as it is his home...not on the range, but on the yacht.

In fact, if you look to the right of the vessel in the middle foreground and then over to the far bank of the river, you can see a number of other yachts tied up at a small mooring. This is his usual maritime home, although I don't think we have ever been shown the boat's name. It is featured, in an unexpected way, in the final scenes of Series 3 which has just finished being shown in Australia. My lips are sealed.

We have grown to love him in Brisbane, not only for the entertaining television but for really showing the city at its best, although, when identifying some of the locations used in the series, he certainly gets himself into some odd places.

The three series so far have been produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Hoodlum Productions. No information yet on a 4th series, we hope so.

In an odd twist, very similar scenes were used in the first episode of the TV series "Mission Impossible"....."Good Morning Mr. Phelps" that was filmed in Australia during the Hollywood writer's strike back in the 1980's. Back then, that episode was supposedly set in London of all places!

It's more accurate than the local TV Weather Gurus.

The Transamerica Pyramid at 600 Montgomery Street between Clay and Washington Streets in the Financial District of San Francisco, California, United States, is a 48-storey futurist[citation needed] skyscraper and the second tallest building in the San Francisco skyline. It was the tallest building in San Francisco from its completion in 1972 until 2018 when the newly constructed Salesforce Tower surpassed its height. The building no longer houses the headquarters of the Transamerica Corporation, which moved its U.S. headquarters to Baltimore, Maryland. However, the building is still associated with the company by being depicted on the company's logo. Designed by architect William Pereira and built by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company, the building stands at 853 feet (260 m). On completion in 1972 it was the eighth-tallest building in the world. It is also a popular tourist site. In 2020, the building was sold to NYC investor Michael Shvo.

The Transamerica building was commissioned by Transamerica CEO John (Jack) R. Beckett, with the claim that he wished to allow light in the street below. Built on the site of the historic Montgomery Block, it has a structural height of 853 feet (260 m) and has 48 floors of retail and office space.

Construction began in 1969 and finished in 1972, and was overseen by San Francisco–based contractor Dinwiddie Construction, now Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company. Transamerica moved its headquarters to the new building from across the street, where it had been based in a flatiron-shaped building now occupied by the Church of Scientology of San Francisco.

Although the tower is no longer Transamerica Corporation headquarters, it is still associated with the company and is depicted in the company's logo. The building is evocative of San Francisco and has become one of the many symbols of the city. Designed by architect William Pereira, it faced opposition during planning and construction and was sometimes referred to by detractors as "Pereira's Prick". John King of the San Francisco Chronicle summed up the improved opinion of the building in 2009 as "an architectural icon of the best sort – one that fits its location and gets better with age." King also wrote in 2011 that it is "a uniquely memorable building, a triumph of the unexpected, unreal and engaging all at once. ... It is a presence and a persona, snapping into different focus with every fresh angle, every shift in light."

The Transamerica Pyramid was the tallest skyscraper west of Chicago when constructed, surpassing the then Bank of America Center, also in San Francisco. It was surpassed by the Aon Center, Los Angeles, in 1974.

The building is thought to have been the intended target of a terrorist attack, involving the hijacking of airplanes as part of the Bojinka plot, which was foiled in 1995.

In 1999, Transamerica was acquired by Dutch insurance company Aegon. When the non-insurance operations of Transamerica were later sold to GE Capital, Aegon retained ownership of the building as an investment. In 2020, the building was purchased by SHVO and Deutsche Finance America for $650 million.

The Transamerica Pyramid was the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco from 1972 to 2017, when it was surpassed by the under-construction Salesforce Tower. It is one of 39 San Francisco high rises reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as potentially vulnerable to a large earthquake, due to a flawed welding technique.

The land use and zoning restrictions for the parcel limited the number of square feet of office that could be built upon the lot, which sits at the north boundary of the financial district.

The building is a tall, four-sided pyramid with two "wings" to accommodate an elevator shaft on the east and a stairwell and a smoke tower on the west. The top 212 feet (65 m) of the building is the spire. There are four cameras pointed in the four cardinal directions at the top of this spire forming the "Transamerica Virtual Observation Deck."[citation needed] Four monitors in the lobby, whose direction and zoom can be controlled by visitors, display the cameras' views 24 hours a day. An observation deck on the 27th floor was closed: the Pyramid's official website says that it was closed to the public in 2001, while the New York Times reported that it has been closed "[s]ince the late 1990s". It was replaced by the virtual observation deck a few years later. The video signal from the "Transamericam" was used for years by a local TV news station for live views of traffic and weather in downtown San Francisco.

The top of the Transamerica Pyramid is covered with aluminum panels. During the Christmas holiday season, on Independence Day, and during the anniversary of 9/11, a brightly twinkling beacon called the "Crown Jewel" is lit at the top of the pyramid.

My job at the uni I work at is to bring media attention to the work of our researchers. Here is one of our PhD students being interviewed by the local tv news about the work she is doing with Spot, the dog-like robot. The project is to understand how people and robots could better work together.

Unity Road, Toronto ON, 28 Nov 2020

It seems that the residents of Unity Road have all been purchasing the same inflatable made-in-China christmas llamas. Now there is a blow-up llama in most front yards. This is what happens when people shop at Canadian Tire.

A local TV station has noticed: toronto.ctvnews.ca/toronto-neighbourhood-transforms-into-...

My relatives have bought one for their Unity Road residence. They tell me it is controlled by Google Home.

A reporter and a cameraman setting up to make a broadcast for local TV. They were reporting on the fact that the steps at Birling Gap are having to be moved back because of the loss of chalk in the cliffs. There is no way down to the beach now that work has started.
