16 Jul. 2021. Lethbridge, Alberta. Canada. JOHN PINTO. Born 1927. Ex Mombasa. John grew up in Mombasa, Kenya. He attended college in India, then returned to Mombasa to become a high school math teacher and later a principal. John left teaching after 25 years and began a new career as branch manager of an industrial equipment wholesaler. At age 65, John retired to embark upon another adventure – immigration to Canada. Upon arriving in Lethbridge, John joined the LSCO where he happily attended and subsequently taught computer courses. His colleagues will remember his teaching skills, his ability to create curriculum, and his dedication to the Computer Club over the following 20-plus years. He was also known for his humility, curiosity, cheerfulness, and his consideration for others. His family particularly admired his patience and dictionary-knowledge of English words! John’s quiet, peaceable demeanour touched the hearts of more people than he would ever have believed. He will be missed. Condolences may be sent through the funeral home website: www.mbfunerals.com/obituary/John-Pinto

November 6 at 8:49 AM ·

Edmund Fitzgerald Timeline: On November 9, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald departed from Superior, Wisconsin at 2:15 pm with 26,116 tons of taconite headed for Detroit, Michigan. The Fitzgerald was under the leadership of Captain Ernest M. McSorley. Later that afternoon, the Fitz met the Arthur M. Anderson (Captain Jesse B. Cooper) as it left Two Harbors, Minnesota. Due to the storm headed north, both McSorley and Cooper decided to travel north of the usual shipping lanes, a common practice in poor weather.

By the morning of November 10, previously issued gale warnings were upgraded to storm warnings. As the two ships passed Caribou Island, located on the eastern portion of Lake Superior, Captain Cooper noted how close the Fitz came to a nearby shoal at 3:15 pm. Over the next few hours, the Fitzgerald reported a down fence rail, two lost or damaged vent covers, a list, and down radar systems. At 7:10 pm the First Mate of the Anderson, Morgan Clark, radioed the Fitzgerald to provide navigational points and to ask how the ship was doing. Captain McSorley responded, “We are holding our own.” This was the final communication with the Fitz and it disappeared from sight and radar due to a snow squall at 7:15 pm.

Between 7:25 pm and 8:25 pm, Captain Cooper contacted other ships and the Coast Guard to ask if they could see the Fitz on their radar. No one could. The Coast Guard listed the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew of 29 men missing shortly thereafter. When preliminary searches were done, all that was found was debris.

In the days that followed, the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards continued to search. On November 14, 1975 an anti-sub plane detected an object 530 feet below Lake Superior’s surface 17 miles from Whitefish Point. The object was confirmed to be the Edmund Fitzgerald in May 1976 using an underwater research vehicle.

Join us as we honor the souls lost in the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald with a memorial beacon lighting and program on Nov. 10, including guided tours, videos, a reading of the names of the crew, and the lighting of the beacon at 4:30 pm. A portion of the program will be livestreamed on YouTube.

In response to the global crisis in education, thousands of education actors from around the world came together for the Transforming Education Summit during the U.N. General Assembly this past September to discuss systemic issues of equity, inclusion, quality, and relevance. From climate emergencies to the rise of fake news to public health crises, education systems must not only equip the next generation with the skills needed to read, write, and count, but to actively problem-solve and think creatively in today’s rapidly changing world. To help reach Sustainable Development Goal 4, it is essential to transform education systems to meet the needs of today’s learners and deliver a breadth of skills equitably to all children.

The Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings hosted a symposium on education systems transformation on Friday, February 17 at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. As a celebration of its 20th anniversary, the center launched its new 10-year strategy focusing on systems transformation for holistic education, locally defined priorities, and collaboration in bringing research to practice across education ecosystems. The event explored some of the false dichotomies that often characterize education systems transformation—foundational versus holistic learning, local versus global focus, and policy versus practice—and examined the critical role of systems transformation across CUE’s and partners’ diverse work portfolios.

The opening and closing sessions were livestreamed for remote audiences.

Speaking during de Session: Leading with Empathy in Times of Crisis

For leaders, the COVID crisis has posed an unprecedented challenge in guiding people through uncertainty, but it has also provided a opportunity to nourish new visions, build trust, recalibrate operating models and rethink the role of organisations and leadership in the longer term. How can leaders turn empathy into action and lead in a new, more positive and impactful way? This is a livestreamed session.
