The O2 Arena, commonly known as The O2, is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the centre of The O2 entertainment district on the Greenwich Peninsula in southeast London. It opened in its present form in 2007. It has the second-highest seating capacity of any indoor venue in the United Kingdom, behind the Manchester Arena, and in 2008 was the world's busiest music arena. As of 2022, it is the ninth-largest building in the world by volume with a diameter of 365 metres (399 yards) and a height of 52 metres (57 yards).

The arena was built under the Millennium Dome (renamed The O2), a large dome-shaped building built to house an exhibition celebrating the turn of the third millennium; as the structure still stands over the arena, The Dome remains a name in common usage for the venue. The arena, as well as the overall The O2 complex, is named after its primary sponsor, the telecommunications company O2, a subsidiary of Virgin Media O2.

History

Following the closure of the Millennium Experience at the end of 2000, the Millennium Dome was leased to Meridian Delta Ltd. in December 2001, for redevelopment as an entertainment complex. This included plans for an indoor arena.

Construction of the arena started in 2003, and finished in 2007. In December 2004, after the interior of the dome had been largely cleared and before building work inside began, the dome was used as the main venue for the annual Crisis Open Christmas organised by the London-based homelessness charity Crisis.

Owing to the impossibility of using cranes inside the dome structure, the arena's roof was constructed on the ground within the dome and then lifted; the arena building's structure was then built around the roof. The arena building, which houses the arena and the arena concourse, is independent from all other buildings in the O2 and houses all the arena's facilities. The arena building itself takes up 40% of the total dome structure.

The seating arrangement throughout the whole arena can be modified, similar to the AO Arena in Manchester. The ground surface can also be changed between ice rink, basketball court, exhibition space, conference venue, private hire venue and concert venue.

The arena was designed to reduce echoing, a problem common among older arenas used for concerts]

On 18 February 2022 during Storm Eunice, large sections of the arena's fabric roof were shredded, causing the evacuation of 1,000 people, and the venue to close. It was later announced that repair works would take place and that the arena was likely to reopen on 25 February 2022, for a UB40 concert. The repairs took place as planned, with the O2 Arena reopened as scheduled.

Prince's stage for his sold-out performance of 2007

In August 2007, rock star Prince began a series of 21 sold-out nights at the O2 Arena. The record-breaking run featured many of his hits while the set list changed every night so no two shows would be the same.

Beginning in July 2009, Michael Jackson was scheduled to hold a 50-show residency at the arena, titled This Is It.[15][16] However, he died on 25 June, eighteen days before the first scheduled show.

The arena hosted the ATP World Tour Finals between 2009 and 2020.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the venue was referred as the North Greenwich Arena due to Olympics regulations regarding corporate sponsorship of event sites.

Since March 2013, the arena has hosted C2C: Country to Country, Europe's largest country music festival, which annually attracts over 20,000 fans. UK and Irish acts, as well as up-and-coming American acts, perform sets several times across various pop-up stages in and around the arena, with the main stage accessible only to ticket-holders. The seventh C2C was held on 8–10 March 2019.

The arena has hosted the 2013 EuroLeague Final Four between 10-12 May 2013.

Ariana Grande was scheduled to perform on 25 and 26 May 2017 as part of her Dangerous Woman Tour, but the event was cancelled after the Manchester Arena bombing on 22 May. The event was not rescheduled. Grande, however, held five concerts at the arena for her Sweetener World Tour on 17, 19, and 20 August 2019 as well as 15 and 16 October 2019.

On 30 November 2019, JoJo Siwa became the youngest person to perform in the O2 Arena at the age of 16, as part of her D.R.E.A.M. The Tour.

On 14 May 2022, Little Mix held their The Last Show (For Now) in the O2, which was their last show before their indefinite hiatus. Along with performing there live to 20,000 they also livestreamed the show live to millions for those who could not attend The Confetti Tour.

On 15 October 2022, the O2 hosted a boxing match between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall that was the first time two female boxers headlined at a major venue in the United Kingdom. Shields won, and the fight headlined the first all-female boxing card in the United Kingdom.

On 1 July 2023, the O2 Arena hosted WWE Money In The Bank,[27] as well as the 30 June 2023 go-home episode of Friday Night SmackDown beforehand, which was the first time the show aired live on BT Sport (Now known as TNT Sports).

The O2 Arena will host the final of the 2024 League of Legends World Championship on 2 November 2024.

Ticket sales records

Despite being open for only 200 days per year (the equivalent of seven months), the venue sold over 1.2 million tickets in 2007, making it the third most popular venue in the world for concerts and family shows, narrowly behind the Manchester Arena (1.25 million) and Madison Square Garden in New York City (1.23 million).

As of 2021, the O2 Arena was still the busiest music arena in the world in terms of ticket sales.

Yesterday, we were livestreaming our walk around the Lower East Side to highlight some of the wonderful small businesses in the neighborhood and captured this scene of the burning of Joss paper outside a Chinese grocery store. Joss paper also known as incense papers are papercrafts or sheets of paper made into burnt offerings common in Chinese ancestral worship (such as the veneration of the deceased family members and relatives on holidays and special occasions). Joss paper is also used for worship of deities in Chinese folk religion.

The orca presentations for this round of Inside Look have been at Underwater Viewing, which has made for some unique photo opportunities! I originally was planning on only livestreaming this particular presentation on Instagram, so I didn't switch to my short lens, but I think it worked out okay and made for some unique photos. I love Keet's eye here!

Last month Victoria Rose asked if I'd do a tape design and photoshoot for a friend of hers, and last night she was able to bring the fabulous Nathalie Banks into the studio for a variety of glamour looks. For those of you not lucky enough to be there, they livestreamed the event so you can be part of the action: livestream.com/accounts/17663653/events/4865362 #bodyart #blacktape #model #photography #color #colour #photo #modelphotography #imagerybydkmackinnon #ottawa #canada

An order from LEGO came in, so I finished the engine bay entirely. The chassis drives, steers, and the active aero mechanism is fully functional. Also, shortly after I took these pictures, I did the pneumatic tubing for the top shock absorber, and it works just as intended. I'm considering limiting the travel of the suspension so the ride height is slightly lower, which will let me pressurize the top shock even more (for proper anti-squat).

Further progress will come after a week and a half. I'll be going on a short vacation, after which I will be working hard on the Koenigsegg project and placing a few last-minute Bricklink orders. Definitely will be livestreaming the completion of the car, and I'll announce the dates and times for those next week!

UN Women Asia Pacific Regional Office - Thailand

To launch the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the UNiTE Inter-agency group hosted the Asia-Pacific Regional Curated Dialogue. Livestreamed in the format of a TV programme and hosted by UN Women Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific, Cindy Bishop, the event featured senior representatives from Government, the United Nations, Civil Society partners and frontline service providers to share their journey, experiences and vision.

pictured: •Violinist: June-Chanakarn Wisuk Cho

The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign is marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (25 November to 10 December 2020) under the global theme, “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!". UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign is amplifying the call for global action to bridge funding gaps, ensure essential services for survivors of violence during the COVID-19 crisis, focus on prevention, and collection of data that can improve life-saving services for women and girls. The campaign is part of UN Women’s efforts for Beijing+25 and building up to launch bold new actions and commitments to end violence against women at the Generation Equality Forum in Mexico and France in 2021.

This year is like no other. Even before COVID-19 hit, violence against women and girls had reached pandemic proportions. Globally, 243 million women and girls were abused by an intimate partner in the past year. Meanwhile, less than 40 per cent of women who experience violence report it or seek help.

As countries implemented lockdown measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, violence against women, especially domestic violence, intensified – in some countries, calls to helplines have increased five-fold. In others, formal reports of domestic violence have decreased as survivors find it harder to seek help and access support through the regular channels. School closures and economic strains left women and girls poorer, out of school and out of jobs, and more vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, forced marriage, and harassment.

Nando's #100 in South London’s Streatham must have gotten the memo that we were coming, as they’d closed for a refit for the couple of months prior to our visit. Obviously embarrassed by their 11 year old décor, they’d made sure they were fully spruced up by the time we arrived. Ten of us visited at around 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. The place was expectedly busy. We were told there’d be quite a wait for a table, but we’d have to hang around in their waiting area (a shame, as there are plenty of pubes/cafes and the like nearby). This was especially baffling as not only was their waiting area already almost completely occupied, it would not have accommodated for ten of us , even if it were empty. It was a sunny day, so we instead decided to wait outside (after checking with a member of staff to see if that was allowed).

Eventually, we were given the options of two different sections. There were no tables for ten, so it would be a couple of tables at the front or, ten minutes later, a couple of booths at the back. As we were planning to livestream the whole N100 event, we decided that the back would be better for us, so waited the extra few minutes. Our chosen tables were eventually vacated and wiped down and we re-entered the restaurant. I did not visit this place before the refurb, so can’t tell you what is and isn’t new, but it really didn’t strike me as being spacious, or even making good use of the space they had. The place was busy, noisy (not really helped by ten of us yelling at a camera) and a general obstacle to navigate. There were lots of build-ups of people on the way to the tills or condiments area and the segregated interior design just made the place feel more claustrophobic. The light fittings and art were clearly new, but there’s nothing here to make this refurbished restaurant stand out amongst some of the newer openings. We eventually ordered, and the food came out rather quickly. My thigh burger and quarter chicken with sides was pretty good, though I was really hungry at this point (not to mention pretty tipsy).

The staff became more friendly and attentive as the visit progressed. I suspect at least one of them clocked on to the fact that we were livestreaming the meal. On leaving, a couple of staff members asked me how it was. One said “if you return, that will show us that we have done well”. While the food was nice, the general atmosphere of the place is sadly not one that I’ll be rushing back to. Maybe it’s unfair judging this place on one of the busier periods of the week (or so I’d imagine), but that is when our visit fell. Still, the staff are far better here than at most of the other South London branches I’ve been to. If this Nando’s had better waiting area hospitality then it may have got a full cock more from me.

David Jones AW13 Fashion Launch: Sydney, Australia - 6th February 2013...

A good dose of Australia's social set gathered to watch top line models including Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale strut at David Jones' Elizabeth Street store from around 7pm this evening.

Thirty-seven designers including Alex Perry, Collette Dinnigan and Zimmerman showcased over 230 looks alongside DJs runway debutants, Ellery, Rachel Gilbert and Banjo and Matilda.

Dual tone colours and prints featured heavily throughout the evening while lace and leather made a big comeback.

The 175-year-old retailer has reluctantly embraced new technologies to lift struggling sales and this year's event was livestreamed (via the internet) for the benefit of those who missed out on one of the show's exclusive tickets.

David Jones' group executive of merchandise Donna Player said those who couldn't attend could keep track of what was happening on social media.

"Customer viewing parties are a first and there will be stylists there as well. They can watch the livestream from Sydney, drink champagne and participate in the whole event even though they aren't physically here," she told Murdoch owned The Telegraph.

"It's bringing social media back to that whole tactile experience because they are able to buy the clothes straight away, the majority of those looks are in store immediately."

Well done to everyone involved in the success of the event. Now to wait and see if it makes a difference to the bottom line of the high end retailer.

December 19, 2014 – Mixed pod of Bottlenose Dolphins and Pilot Whales - at Taiji Japan

Early this morning at approximately 8:00am Cove Guardians could see 12 vessels heading together on the horizon. The killing fleet had spotted a pod of dolphins and wasted no time in pushing them towards Taiji - and the cove. The pod put up a tough fight and tried everything they could to escape the killers, however all their attempts at freedom were in vain as they were eventually netted off into the cove.

Today was a very profitable day for Taiji as the killers drove in both Bottlenose dolphins and Pilot Whales. We are estimating that approximately 40-45 Pilot Whales were driven in today, alongside at least 8 Bottlenose dolphins - one being a very young calf just a few months old. This young calf was seen clinging to its mothers side as they were spy hopping, confused and terrified after the exhausting drive.

The killers showed their lack of compassion as they decided to leave the pod over night, where they will be swimming in circles until their fate is decided. The weather for tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, so time will show if the pod will have to spend two nights in agony in the cove, before coming face to face with the dolphin killers.

Cove Guardians have been monitoring the pod through the day, and haunting cries can be heard over the cove as darkness descends.. Cove Guardians will be livestreaming tomorrow at approximately 6:30am, but we will update our social media with any potential changes.

Speaking during de Session: Leading with Empathy in Times of Crisis

For leaders, the COVID crisis has posed an unprecedented challenge in guiding people through uncertainty, but it has also provided a opportunity to nourish new visions, build trust, recalibrate operating models and rethink the role of organisations and leadership in the longer term. How can leaders turn empathy into action and lead in a new, more positive and impactful way? This is a livestreamed session. The big news story of the day for us.. some shots were fired in Ottawa killing a ceremonial soldier at the National War Memorial and inside the Canadian Parliament. I watched it unfold on CBC & CTV's live stream online and hope and prayed it wouldn't get out of hand and get a whole lot worse.. which thankfully it didn't.. The world is a crappy place at times. The lone shooter was shot dead so I 'm not sure we'll ever know fully why this happened but it's leaning towards home grown terrorism or at least that's the storyline for the moment.

Speaking during the Session: Will the M&A Boom Last?

Despite 2021 global mergers and acquisitions activity reaching new highs due to cheap financing and pent-up demand, early 2022 figures have shown a fall back.
