Doc is a Boeing B-29 Superfortress. It is one of two that are flying in the world (the other B-29 being FIFI). It is owned by Doc's Friends, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Wichita, Kansas, United States.
Military career
The B-29 was built in 1944 as part of a production run of 1,620 aircraft built by Boeing at Wichita, Kansas, and allocated the military Serial Number 44-69972.[2] It was delivered to the United States Army Air Forces in March 1945. The aircraft did not see combat and was converted to a radar calibration aircraft in 1951 and based at Griffiss Air Force Base, New York. While based at Griffiss, the squadron's members named their B-29s after characters in the Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and 44-69972 became Doc.[3] In 1955, the aircraft, modified as a TB-29, was moved to Yuma County Airport in Arizona to be used as a target tug.[4] Retired from the United States Air Force in 1956, it was sent to the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake for use as a ballistic missile target.
Preparations to return Doc to flight began in 1987 under the direction of Tony Mazzolini, an Air Force veteran who later worked for Continental Airlines.[6] After inquiring about the possibility of acquiring the bomber, the Navy agreed to release the aircraft under the condition that Mazzolini provide a restored B-25 Mitchell medium bomber in exchange, to supplement the collection of the National Naval Aviation Museum. After locating a suitable aircraft in South America and restoring it to the Navy's satisfaction, the transfer was ultimately completed in 1998. Doc was then towed to the nearby Inyokern Airport, where it was dismantled for transport to Wichita for restoration.
Restoration:
The airframe was acquired by the United States Aviation Museum of Cleveland, Ohio, for restoration to flight status. After extensive restoration work at the Boeing plant in Wichita, Kansas, where it was originally built, the aircraft was moved in March 2007 to the Kansas Aviation Museum. In February 2013, the aircraft was acquired by the non-profit organization "Doc's Friends". As of June 2014, all four overhauled engines and propellers had been reinstalled, a spokesperson for the group stating at that time that the aircraft would be airborne by the end the year.[citation needed] This timetable was not achieved, with the aircraft being towed out of the workshop for the first time on March 23, 2015.[7] A few months after the rollout, the first post-restoration flight was anticipated to take place by the end of the year.[8] At 8 a.m. on September 18, 2015, Doc successfully completed its first engine starts and testing of all four engines in Wichita.[9] On May 11, 2016, the restoration crew performed the first of many low-speed taxi tests as the final preparations for the post-restoration flight began. This marked the first time since 1956 that the B-29 moved under its own power. Doc traveled more than a half mile during the taxi test and the crew was able to successfully test the brakes and steering.[10][11] The aircraft received a certificate of airworthiness from the Federal Aviation Administration on May 20, 2016, allowing it to be flown.
On July 17, 2016, the aircraft flew for the first time since 1956, piloted by members of FIFI's flight crews.[13][14] Take off was delayed due to issues with the forward bomb bay doors latching shut, and the flight was conducted with the undercarriage down.[15] The event was livestreamed on YouTube and the Doc's Friends website.[16][17][18]

This weekend's activities revolved around the Sudarshana Chakra, Lord Narayanaya's famed spiritual weapon. Known for its protection of the surrendered devotees and its destruction of all negative forces, it was a timely focus for these days of Covid-19 and the fear that seems so prevalent in the world today.
Saturday started with Guru puja, followed by Kalash puja, and then the Sudarshana Yajna began. For this event, not only the main yajna kund was used, but eight individual kunds were placed around the Sudarshana murti located in front of the main temple. Simultaneously, 50 individually-sponsored yajnas were performed on the back lawn by Residents of The Ashram. After the yajnas, Gurudev also performed an abhishekam ceremony on the large murti.
The entire event was livestreamed and commented on by Rishis and Swamis who gave insights into the significance of the Sudarshana Chakra and told personal stories. On Sunday morning, Gurudev joined the prayers to sing a variety of beautiful bhajans, too.

The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign is marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (25 November to 10 December 2020) under the global theme, “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!". UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign is amplifying the call for global action to bridge funding gaps, ensure essential services for survivors of violence during the COVID-19 crisis, focus on prevention, and collection of data that can improve life-saving services for women and girls. The campaign is part of UN Women’s efforts for Beijing+25 and building up to launch bold new actions and commitments to end violence against women at the Generation Equality Forum in Mexico and France in 2021.
This year is like no other. Even before COVID-19 hit, violence against women and girls had reached pandemic proportions. Globally, 243 million women and girls were abused by an intimate partner in the past year. Meanwhile, less than 40 per cent of women who experience violence report it or seek help.
As countries implemented lockdown measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, violence against women, especially domestic violence, intensified – in some countries, calls to helplines have increased five-fold. In others, formal reports of domestic violence have decreased as survivors find it harder to seek help and access support through the regular channels. School closures and economic strains left women and girls poorer, out of school and out of jobs, and more vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, forced marriage, and harassment.

Professor Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in October 2013, after experiments at CERN in Switzerland confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson.
We're very proud that Prof Higgs is one of our honorary fellows. In fact, he was at Swansea University giving a lecture for his first public engagement after the news broke that the boson had been discovered.
And did we mention that the head of the CERN team, Dr Lyn Evans, is a Swansea University graduate?
Professor Higgs' lecture was publicly live streamed and recorded, and is available to view here.
Professor Simon Hands (Swansea University; previously of CERN) interviewed Professor Higgs on the morning of his talk, which is also available to view.

A Public Suicide
So what else happened on the day that Joan posted the card?
Well, the 17th. August 1964 marked the birth in Cross Houses, Shrewsbury, UK of Kevin Whitrick.
Kevin Neil Whitrick killed himself at the age of 42 on the 21st. March 2007 in Telford, UK.
Kevin was a British citizen and an electrical engineer. His death was highly publicised because of his live, online webcast suicide.
At the time of his death, he was married to his wife Paula, but lived apart from his family after the breakdown of his marriage two years previously.
On the day of his death, Kevin Whitrick was in a chatroom on PalTalk along with about 60 other users in a special "insult" chatroom where people "have a go at each other".
He suddenly stood on a chair, punched a hole in the ceiling and placed a rope around a joist. He then tied the other end around his neck, then stepped off the chair. Some people thought this was a prank, until his face started turning blue.
Some people in the chatroom egged him on, while others tried desperately to find his address. A member in the room contacted the police, who arrived at the scene two minutes later. However Kevin Whitrick was pronounced dead at 11:15 pm GMT.
Aftermath of the Suicide
The death was reported in the press, and is notable because of concerns that it could inspire other suicides, the possibility of the webcam footage being made available on the internet, and discussions over the culpability of web users who encouraged the man to kill himself.
Police detectives traced the chatroom users to question them about their role in the cyber suicide. The Crown Prosecution Service has stated that none of the chatroom users will face criminal charges.

Murder on the Internet
Murder has also been portrayed on the Internet.
18 year old twin sisters, Amália and Amanda Alves were shot dead in July 2021 in a horrific gangland execution that was live-streamed on Instagram. It was reported that the shooting happened because the women 'knew too much' about incidents involving drug dealers.
The young women's bodies were found hours later after they were killed on the side of a road behind a property complex in Pacajus, Brazil. Amanda Alves left behind a three-year-old daughter, whilst her twin sister Amália Alves had become a mum to a son who was only six-months-old.
A 17 year old suspect in the case was arrested on suspicion of the bloodbath.
Video footage captured the sisters’ harrowing final moments as they knelt next to each other on the dirty road. The pair were forced to gather their hair up in a bun before the suspect took the gun to the back of their skulls and fired the fatal bullets.
He then blasted two more shots at one of the sisters before standing over the other victim and firing another four bullets at her limp body.
