The Pope Estate possesses both architectural and historic significance. Its associations with historically important individuals are strong factors in establishing its significance. However, its architectural values and cultural importance as a complex, provide its most important and significant contributions.
The architectural significance of the Main House lies in its remarkable design qualities, particularly interior; importance as an architectural example of its era, status as a key building in a recognizably unique environment, and importance as a cultural representative of an era of great wealth and personalities that contributed to the growth and development of the state. The House was built in 1884 by George Tallant, son of pioneer San Francisco Banker Drury Tallant, founder of one of the oldest banks of that city. The house represents the first private estate construction on lakeside property in this area.
The Main House of the Pope Estate is a 38' x 62' wood framed, shingle covered building. A gambrel roof overhangs an open porch supported by large bark-covered log columns. Dormer windows extend in both directions from the shingle-covered roof.
Large stone chimneys stand at east and west end walls, symmetrically flanking the house. Windows are primarily small-paned leaded glass casement. The building is rectangular in shape. A latticed kitchen passage extends from the house to the kitchen building. Interiors are particularly high in quality of workmanship and material.
The house is significant as one of the oldest remaining estate houses in the area.
It is a fine example of its style and type of architecture, possessing some outstanding values. It is also a key structure in the complex that surrounds it, having "set" the style for its architectural themes, and essentially generated estate construction. Not only did it establish the principal style or treatment for most of the other complex buildings, providing a visual focal point, it served as the administrative base for estate activities and operations.
It is the central structure of a unique complex that reflects a significant aspect of California’s cultural history. The number and specific uses of the estate complex buildings provide insights and understanding of a past life style, important in the development of the state.
The Pope complex is the oldest and most completely intact complex remaining in the area. The quality of its design and the overall integrity of the group is high. The complex reflects, through its variety of buildings and their placement, a uniquely clear picture of a vanished life style and culture. As an unusually complete reflection of a past era, the complex represents an irreplaceable cultural resource.

A visit to Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot Museum and Village in Wiltshire.
Lacock Abbey in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire, England, was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian order. The abbey remained a nunnery until the suppression of Roman Catholic institutions in England in the 16th century; it was then sold to Sir William Sharington who converted the convent into a residence where he and his family lived. It was fortified and remained loyal to the crown during the English Civil War, but surrendered to the Parliamentary forces once Devizes had fallen in 1645.
The house was built over the old cloisters and its main rooms are on the first floor. It is a stone house with stone slated roofs, twisted chimney stacks and mullioned windows. Throughout the life of the building, many architectural alterations, additions, and renovations have occurred so that the house is a mish-mash of different periods and styles. The Tudor stable courtyard to the north of the house has retained many of its original features including the brewhouse and bakehouse.
The house later passed into the hands of the Talbot family, and during the 19th century was the residence of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what may be the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows.
In 1944 artist Matilda Theresa Talbot gave the house and the surrounding village of Lacock to the National Trust. The abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum, devoted to the pioneering work of William Talbot in the field of photography. The Trust markets the abbey and village together as "Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot Museum & Village". The abbey is a Grade I listed building, having been so designated on 20 December 1960.

Day six on our way to visit friends in Somerset before making out way to Bristol were we are staying for the tonight.
The Yarn Market in Dunster, Somerset, England was built in the early 17th century. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument. Dunster was an important market place in the Middle Ages particularly following the construction of Dunster Castle and the establishment of the Priory Church of St George.
The market cross was probably built in 1609 by the Luttrell family who were the local lords of the manor to maintain the importance of the village as a market, particularly for wool and cloth. It still bears the damage caused by cannon fire in the Civil War. Nearby was an older cross known as the Butter Cross which has subsequently been moved to the outskirts of the village. The Yarn Market is an octagonal building constructed around a central pier. The tiled roof provides shelter from the rain.
The octagonal building, which is 9.4 metres (31 ft) in diameter, has a central stone pier which supports a heavy timber framework for the structure. The slate roof has a central wooden lantern topped by a weather vane. The roof is interrupted by a series of dormer windows. Around the periphery is a low wall and vertical timber supports. Some of the sills are stone and others timber.
One of the roof beams has a hole in it, a result of cannon fire in the Civil War, when Dunster Castle was a besieged Royalist stronghold for five months under the command of Colonel Wyndham. Following the damage, it was restored in 1647 to its present condition by Francis Luttrell.
The building was the inspiration for the Rest House, on Bournville Village Green in Birmingham, which was built in 1914 to commemorate the silver wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs George Cadbury.
