Because the show I made this art for has been delayed until November, I've decided to let you guys see this new drawing that will soon become a limited edition 2 color print. I made it for a group show where all of the art had to be made in black and red and be based off of a book. My book of choice? I vaguely followed the book THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE by Max Brooks. Why vaguely? Because I made this drawing will deep into an art rut and the best I could do was make zombie themed art with pretty much no narrative. Too much information? Maybe.

Woman-Child
I work with a young woman who has grown up too soon. She is caged by labels: her own, her family’s, society’s. A woman still a child, neither here nor there yet mothering a child. A girl who hasn’t crossed the bridge—the luminal place suspended between back-when and what’s-next. She clutches at her past as if falling from it would kill her, yet the thing she clings to, is just the nearest shore.
She stands at a bridge of stone and wood and air: that dangerous space between times. Her life will move on, like the river below. Or stand still watching, waiting. Always waiting.
Stone: my caring rests like pebbles on my tongue, a hard reminder always rolling between thoughts, that stones can break my teeth, sink heavy in my heart. Or stones can build foundations: for bridges, shelter, justice, schools.
Wood: I can open the cage door, try to draw her out. I can point to the other shore -- the gated arch, an open hand, her future. I cannot protect her from uncertainty and pain. There are no guarantees.
Air: I will remind her to breathe. I will teach her to dance. I will not carry her across in my cupped hands, but build for her some wings.

As a Flickr latecomer, I thought I'd throw back to some of my early works first. This photograph features a magnificent sunrise and a small fishing boat moored at Dolphin Island, off Karratha, on the West Pilbara Coast of Western Australia, Australia.
Released as a limited-edition print (edition of 12), "Vivid Awakening" holds a special place in my heart because it played a pivotal role in my development as a landscape and nature photographer.
By this time I’d been dabbling in photography for years on and off, during my travels and as a casual hobby, having bought my first (film) SLR camera in 2000 or thereabouts while living - and travelling - in the UK. But the confidence I gained from this one image is what gave me the impetus to follow the path that has led me to when I now stand.
In essence, you could say, “Vivid Awakening” was my awakening as a photographer!
Having camped overnight on Dolphin Island, near Karratha, I have to concede I would have missed this spectacle if it wasn’t for my father-in-law banging on the tent and telling my wife and I with some urgency to get up! Stumbling out blurry-eyed we were simply in awe of the show Mother Nature was putting on for us - the colours in the sky were just spectacular.

When our letter carrier arrived today my New York City contact, Barbara, ( www.flickr.com/photos/34982686@N07 ) had sent a big surprise. Tessa could hardly believe her eyes. It was a limited edition print with a message Tessa could really get behind.
Tessa likes to think the top cat in the middle is her. That's fine.
Thank you Barbara (and Emma)!!
P.S. It's hot here. You can see my forehead and hair are wet and I think Tessa's whiskers have uncurled.
my first calendar.
“Gleaning is a process of survival for Mary. She illuminates a period in her private life after rummaging through the public lives around all of us and creates timeless objects for new reflection. Mary Bogdan is a source of eternal grace & insight. I know all of this to be true, and I have never heard the sound of her voice.” Jon Haynes, curator and artist, Washington, DC.
A great calendar of selected works by artist Mary Bogdan, featuring 13 works of art, including combine paintings, assemblages, works on paper and limited edition prints. In the best tradition of the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.
A series of limited edition prints of ten images revealing layers of time & place, hope & faith, science & religion. Contemplation and questioning, at a time of grief for my father's death. Letters-in-a-book is a series of ten images using layers of old letters found in a thrift shop, written between Oct. 1945 and July 1946, sent from family members in Warsaw, Poland to kin in Shawinigan, Quebec. These letters convey post-WWII life in, then occupied, Poland, at a time and place that reminds me of my father as a young man from this part of the world, at his most vital time in life.
Also included are personal letters sent to me by my husband.
These handwritten and typed letters are juxtaposed with two old books. One is a book of ancient & modern "Hymns" of the Church of St James The Apostle and the other is “EOS, Or the Wider Aspects of Cosmogony*” by J. H. Jeans. Books that represent my Roman Catholic, religious upbringing while at the same time further reflecting my own personal search for meaning at a very contemplative time in my life.
“The universe which we study with such care may be a dream, and we brain-cells in the mind of the dreamer.”
*cosmogony
1. cos·mog·o·ny
A specific theory or model of the origin and evolution of the universe.
2. cosmogony
n : the branch of astrophysics that studies the origin and evolution and structure of the universe, one such theory can be found in Genesis.
Exhibited at Les Femmeuses, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Montreal, April 2005. Purchased and currently in a private collection.

Hand Stencilled Edition of only 15 - available online Monday 2nd Feb 3pm (GMT)
As you know, I like to play around with established brands and logos as the basis to my art and this is no exception….. For me this piece sits within the "Desensitisation Theory" pigeonhole i.e. the more we see war, political and religious unrest on our screens (and there's tons of it around) the more it becomes like a common everyday consumable - i.e. the *Mars chocolate bar.
DESCRIPTION: Hand stencilled (not a print) using Montana Gold spray paint (Gold Chrome, Black, White Cream and Ketchup Red) on 350gsm Colorplan black art paper - Signed, numbered and blind stamped - SIZE: approx. 760mm x 480mm - 30" x 20" - PRICE: £125.00 + Shipping.
AVAILABLE HERE…. www.k-guy.co.uk/pages/shop.php
After reading the story that riot police were attacked with paint bombs by protesters during a demonstration by students and teachers in Colombia, I just couldn't resist paying homage.
It's not something I'm planning on releasing as it's pretty much a direct rip from the original pic but loved the image and worth celebrating this piece of street art in its perfect, purest form.
