SFU sets to close its only family residence, students & families speak out against eviction
BURNABY BC: On the night of Saturday March 7th, twenty families and around forty individual residents of the Louis Riel House at SFU received eviction notices. At the end of August, the Louis Riel House, the only student residence at SFU that accommodates families, will be closed. The university has not issued a reason for the planned closure.
On Tuesday March 10th residents held a news conference to speak out against the closure of the Louis Riel House, the shuttering of family and lower-income graduate housing on SFU campus, and the displacement of students and families from Burnaby Mountain.
Teresa Dettling, a single mother, undergraduate student and resident of Louis Riel House, heard a rumour that the administration was planning to close the building and called a meeting of residents. She said, “The community here is everything to me and my family. I came to school because I grew up poor and I want to give a better life to my daughter. Louis Riel House is the only housing on campus I can afford. And without this community on campus, I don’t know how to make it work.”
Students with partners and children say they are dependent on family housing as a resource at SFU. Those partners also depend on the resources because when one parent is a grad student, the whole family is involved. Amit's wife is a PhD student at SFU. Their family moved to campus housing from a distant part of Surrey in order to better support her to finish her studies. “The community here has supported me to keep going to work and care for my son while my wife was away doing her research,” he said. The diverse international students and Indigenous and non-judgemental, accepting people who live at Louis Riel have formed a tight community that has supported Amit's family. He said, “When my son heard that we might have to leave, he cried. Where will we go? Will it break up our family? The university does not have any answers.”
Ahmed came to SFU from Egypt with his wife and two daughters in order to pursue his engineering PhD, building robotics for stroke patients. He said that he had choices for schools between Canada, the US and England and chose SFU partly because of the housing and resources for his family. Now, he said, “This situation is affecting my studies. We came here with guarantees from SFU about having housing for 12 terms, and the closure of the building is upsetting our plans. My studies are supposed to help people who need support, how am I going to continue this work if my family is not safe and secure?”
The potential health conditions in Louis Riel House are adding to residents’ anxieties. Molly Cooperman is a single-parent and student who has lived at Louis Riel House for a year and a half. She said, “I feel we have been misled. I loved into this building under the impression that it was a safe place for me and my son to live. But once we moved in I found out black mould has been found in the building and has been for years. In December I received an air quality report that there was black mould in my apartment. And now we are being told the building will be closed. Is it being closed because of mould? We deserve to be given a place to live that is safe and on Burnaby Mountain.”
Kathleen Yang, who volunteers with the SFU Women's Centre and has been supporting the Louis Riel tenants, said that “loopholes” in the province's Residential Tenancy Act has left students vulnerable to abuse by the landlord. Because the RTA does not apply to housing operated by educational institutions, “students across BC are vulnerable to being evicted without just cause and without any means of appeal,” she said. “The university has no obligation to maintain the building and they have the power to arbitrarily raise rent by any amount they see fit.” Provincial funding cuts, she says, puts pressure on universities to raise money through means like residence rents.
Residents are organizing a protest rally on Wednesday March 18th, 12noon at “Freedom Square” in the Burnaby SFU main concourse. They will be calling for resident and student involvement in decisions about what happens to Louis Riel House, for current residents to remain housed on Burnaby Mountain (at the same rent prices) even if Louis Riel is closed, and for low-income affordable family housing to be built into future developments at SFU.

Noch fast sie nicht die ganze süße Luft,
Noch hängt an ihrer Wimper schweres Trauern;
Doch mehr und mehr erkennt sie schon den Freund,
Und leis erbebt ihr Leib in Wonneschauern.
