3'x8' dining table made from reclaimed basketball court flooring.
We reclaim gymnasium flooring. Usually 5/4 or 4/4 rock maple. We get 20-30,000 sq ft at a time. Apparantly they must be replaced approx. every 30-50 years because they lose springiness. This material goes in the landfill at approx. $10-15k per gymnasium. Much of it is sold in large lots to be reused as flooring but we sell smaller pieces and make furniture from it.
This piece had graphics still on it and I used the same material as edging, making the graphics fall over the edges. The bottom had 2 inch pine sleepers holding it together. I replaced them with 3/4" plywood (also reclaimed from old shelving) and removed the sleepers. With maple floor scraps I built some low-profile stiffeners and blocks to attach the edging to. The edging met at tenoned corners. the whole thing was sanded and varnished with water-based satin polyurethane. finishing over the old floor varnish proved to be a challenge. many coats and sanding down to 600 grit gave it a nice and sturdy finish. Care was taken to preserve the graphics and natural patina as much as possible. If completley sanded the maple is pale and takes years of sun exposure to bring back the schoolhouse yellow everyone is familiar with. The edging was cut from the same material and is lighter...although the contrast is kind of pretty.
The legs came from a 1950s school conference table. they were sanded, primed and painted with gloss white enamel (previously battleship gray). The leveler feet were replaced with new ones. One leveler foot broke off, so I drilled and tapped a new hole slightly off from the original.
It's now the showpiece of this young couple's renovated dining room. Hopefully this year Covid will be tamed and I can see it decked out for a big Thanksgiving dinner.

Wireless control panel for variable speed swimming pool motors (wireless after it's wired!). The pool lights, the motors, the levelers and the chlorinator are all controlled with a remote after all the relays are wired. This photo was taken b4 it was complete --- a work in progress.

I got this idea from a similar project I saw online. I used pieces of various pallets much like "Frankenstein". :) I think this gives it more character. I bought adjustable leg levelers and a lamp kit from Lowe's, and I found the old light fixture at an antique store and gave it new life. The top of the light is bolted to the bottom with a 7 inch bolt and wing nut to allow it to be adjusted up and down. "BE THE LIGHT" on the sides represents our duty as Christians to be the light to the world for Christ to guide others to God. The cross on top and the fleur de lies on the sides are added Christian touches. The lamp symbolizes "being the light." I chose purple, gray and white because that's my daughter's favorite color scheme.

Glass: "That's really another subject entirely. I don't think peer review — I think peer review has to be used with a certain amount of caution, where peer review tends to be a way of reducing risk, and in technology development programs you need risk, so I think too much — you get a situation where NSF is, where they just won't try anything that's new. If you have to have some professor say that it's as good idea, then it's an old one."
Bromberg: "Is that something that was well understood for example in IDA at that point?"
Glass: "I think it was well understood at ARPA, in the early days of ARPA. The atmosphere we're talking about was a collective atmosphere of IDA and ARPA when ARPA was first set up, and it was, that was the great advantage of it, was that a program manager like a Glenn Sherwood and his successor John McCallum could take chances."
Bromberg: "That's very interesting, it's a new aspect —"
Glass: "In the job I’m in now, one of the biggest problems we have in the company is encouraging an atmosphere in which people are not risk averse. And at the same time, we can't be profligate in our use of resources, but the more I see peer review in action, the more I fear it's a great leveler that keeps new ideas — in many cases, they erect too great a barrier for new ideas, when you really would like to go into the laboratory and try things. Some of them will work, some of them won't. So I think peer review has a negative side. I think program managers should be able to fail."

Look out . . . I'm back!
I am slowly sifting through the thousands of pictures I took in PNG. (No G11 quality here, but I like to imagine that I have some interesting mementos.) I thought you would probably be one of the few people who might appreciate the attached. They are something you no doubt see on a daily basis, but not something you are not likely to see on a PNG postcard.
These guys came up to me at a POM 2nd hand clothes market and asked very politely if I would take their photo, which of course I agreed to do. I got them together and told them that I would "snap" on the count of three. They nodded and posed normally, but on three, the following is what happened!
You can imagine my surprise followed by my gales of laughter, when the guy on the left gave me this "right royal red gob full" and followed up with "Welcome to PNG"
His mate was pretty taken back at first, (as you can see in the picture) but when he saw my laughter and reaction, he got over his embarrassment and decided to get in on the act "Numba 1 Buai Man" was really amazed by my complete amusement and he started to laugh hysterically as well. He was so happy that I thought he was "COOL" rather than rude (as he may or may not have initially intended to be????) He was also happy that I asked for another picture. We parted laughing and pointing (at each other) and it was quite a lovely moment. Laughter is such a leveler.
In all my travels through PNG , I have tried in vein to capture a good shot of someone with a really fantastic (bad) "buai mouth" and even tho my chosen subjects have had no idea that I am secretly interested in their outstanding GOB, rather than their "beautiful face" (ha ha ), I have always found them to be totally self-conscious of the way their mouth looks, and will always shut their traps tight as soon as they agree to have a picture. Very frustrating indeed! So this little episode was a real blast for me!
How's their shock value? How's the humour? How's the reality? I loved these guys!
Am I boring you yet? Tell me to stop!
PS - Bad news about the fire, but well done with photos by your Lois Lane . . . they are quite spectacular!

Close view of pedestal showing shape of turning and foot plate. The foot plate is remarkably stable even on an out-of-level floor. There are several hidden screw-in levelers around the perimeter of this foot to allow the table to stand without rocking.
There are many Custom Metal Projects that I create
that require a high level of precise "fitting" in peoples homes.
I can't remember the last time I had one as challenging as this!
The screen was required to fit inside the Granite opening.
Easy - right ???
Except the Fireplace opening had 4 different dimension(s) - each side was different-
and if the "slop" or gap was too large- say over .125"-
light would show though-
and that's no good.
OH - and the "floor" of the fireplace sloped back- so to keep the frame sitting flush to the stone front-
I needed to add custom levelers to the weighted bottom plate- to tilt the frame front or back.

MINI LOADER SAFETY
When using the Kanga with any attachment there are a few important safety points to consider.
Always ensure attachments are positioned as low as possible when the machine is in motion. Driving forward or reverse with a raised attachment may result in the machine tipping or falling causing injury or damage.
If working on a slope, always work up and down keeping the heaviest end facing uphill. Never work across the slope as the machine can easily roll sideways, especially if the attachment is raised.
The Kanga comes with an operator safety switch which is triggered by stepping off the standing platform.
Be sure not to overload the weight restriction of the trailer or your cars towing capacity.
