Never expected to be flickr MIA so long! Attempting to refocus now! Excuses, excuses, so many I could give you! ;-) Will be gliding slowly through your streams this week. Looking forward to catching up with all the beauty and creativity that I have missed!

This is an example of the type of post-processing I sometimes do... I drop brightness and exposure way down which compacts the tonal resolution artificially, and then adjust light levels accordingly. This reduction of the number of tones in the image can produce nice drama in scenes with light/dark contrasts. At the extreme, you could have a monotone (pure black and pure white); the image above probably contains about 10 or 15 tones. (Note: In the original post I called this "Low Dynamic Range"; I believe "Low Tonal Resolution" is more accurate.) (Explore)

Low water levels in Lake Michigan exposed a bit more of the caves made of dolomite limestone. Eons, water, and wind relentlessly pound this exposed rocky shore, ever so slowly eroding and fracturing the Door peninsula.

This has always been one of my favorite places to shoot Milky Way. I thought it would be fun to get 3 photographers lined up on the sand dune, so we hauled a bunch of extra tripods up here and got in position. Low level lighting was used to illuminate the chamber. 6 shots were stacked for noise reduction in the sky and the foreground was shot at ISO 800 for 160sec to get rid of the high ISO blur. The end result is a very clean and detailed image. We offer on-demand Milky Way workshops during the new moon periods each month. Visit our website at www.ActionPhotoTours.com to learn more.

11/07/2020 -- Flowers in Black & White .

Taken in monochrome with a small crop and minor fine adjustments to exposure ( intentionally taken with minus exposure compensation to darken the background - the plant is lit by the sun with a shady patch of garden behind ) .

Description: Gymnocalycium quehlianum is a compact, slow growing plant with attractive spination.

Stem: Up to 7cm wide usually solitary, it appear to be the one of flattest gymnocalyciums, barely rising above the level of the soil. A remarkable characteristic of this species is the colour of the body, which goes from reddish to dark bluish green.

Flowers: Up to 6 cm long. The initial brown background colour of the buds fades to pale pink or white as they open. Flowers have a reddish-coloured throat.

Blooming season: They will bloom at an early age and bloom often during the growing season. The plant

puts on quite a show since the flowers last a week and open in succession.

I have had this plant for donkey's years now and it usually throws up 2 or 3 flowers each year and this year being no exception . As soon as the challenge was set I had in mind that this could be an interesting shot for SSC but it was just sitting there with one spent bud having already flowered and the two just sitting there but not opening . So on a trip down to the village I made sure I had a camera with me and lo & behold I captured my Hollyhocks capture . I later placed the cactus outside in full sun which was just what the cactus needed and the buds opened out to what you see in the shot - hence the strong shadows with the sun off to the right . I was very pleased with how the shot had captured the fineness of the petals as well as the textures .

The Hollyhocks capture can be seen in the first comment box , I guess it is going to be a Marmite thing as to whether you prefer the Cactus shot or the Hollyhocks !!

Two years ago, we bought a vegan donut from a coffee shop in Madison and we both agreed that it was the best donut we’ve ever had.

It was very exciting to learn that the makers of those donuts, Level 5 Donuts, just opened up a storefront at the beginning of May. It’s the 30th vegan establishment we’ve visited, which we hope to visit again.

The donuts we purchased were mixed berry cheesecake, chocolate brownie, churro, and a glazed old fashioned cake. They were all fantastic but I’d definitely go with the cake donut as my favorite (I’ll take cake over a yeast donut any day). So delicious!
