I left this painting 4 days ago, so got back to it today. Had to take a break from it. I am through for now.
Just to the left of the frame a hillside rises up above the farmland, and I thought it would be a great place to shoot from. After hiking up the hillside I noticed a dog barking from where the houses are that you can see. I didn't pay any attention to it then because it was awefully far and there are lots dogs barking in the country. After my third shot or so I noticed her barking again and could see her running towards me just about where you can see at the end of the vineyard. A couple shots later, she'd closed the gap by half and was still on a full sprint, only now I could tell she was big and seemingly very angry.
I grabbed my camera and tripod and bolted toward the road on the right and to the safety of the car. Only because I was up on the hill I soon reached the top of a 10' retaining wall. I glanced back at the dog and it was about 30' away and closing way too fast, so I went for it. I managed to land on my feet if only for a moment and ended up sprawled on the ground. More importantly, my camera hit the dirt as well. Fortunately for both of us it was pretty soft and we both came away with only minor dings.
Also fortunately was that the jump was too high for the dog who began to circle back to how I got there. I made it to the safety of the car before she could get around to me, though closing the door with my tripod fully extended proved to be a challenge and if she wanted she could have taken my leg off. It was at that point I knew she was more interested in scaring the crap out of me than eating me for dinner.
A few minutes later the dog's owner came up the hill on horseback and gave me an earful about getting permission before getting on private property.
Lesson learned!
The Lesson
I keep on dying again.
Veins collapse, opening like the
Small fists of sleeping
Children.
Memory of old tombs,
Rotting flesh and worms do
Not convince me against
The challenge. The years
And cold defeat live deep in
Lines along my face.
They dull my eyes, yet
I keep on dying,
Because I love to live.

The lessons of war always break into lessons of peace. From destruction, we build new ramparts of freedom, demorcary and progress. From emnity and prejudice, we build bonds of understanding, cooperation and solidarity. From hatred, we build compassion, justice and shared human excellence.

I'd like to pass on a lesson I learned the hard way recently. If you own Fuji lenses, or in fact any other brand with white writing around the face of the lens (e.g. Olympus) then beware. As you can see from this photo, under certain light conditions the writing is reflected back off the graduated ND filters. It seems to only happen when bright light is hitting the front of the lens at about 45 degrees.
My answer has been to use a black permanent marker to overwrite the lettering. This can always be removed later with methylated spirits if you want to sell the lens.
