Carol's First Tonal Painting
The first assignment Prof. David Moore gave to Carol was to copy a well-known Max Meldrum print. But the important point of this lesson was to get Carol to accurately see and understand the picture's tones. Shapes and other detail were not important and were forced into lesser focus by David hanging the reference painting upside-down. This insured the subject would not distract her eye away from the tones.
For several weeks Carol would attend the class and concentrate on painting the lights and darks accurately. When David was eventually satisfied, he took Carol's painting and turned it so it could be viewed correctly. It was quite successful! Carol had done a good job with the tones and so the overall look and feel of the painting came across satisfactorily well. This first assignment helped Carol get on the road to understanding and comprehending the importance of tonal values, and how to 'squint down' in order to see and separate them.
My painting shows the evening Carol brought her painting home and explained everything to me. I was impressed! In the many years since this event took place, I have gotten so familiar with correct tones that I was able to paint from a bad photo which didn't even have tones in it. For years I had thought the photo was useless due to bad exposure but I recently decided to force a viewable image just visible enough that I could use it as reference in creating this art piece. With a bit of Photoshop tweaking I was able to see Carol holding her painting, just the way I remembered, and the mirror next to her reflecting another perspective of it all. The picture gave me a reference and I guessed at the tones to get the painting to come-out decently.
So the reality of my piece is that it conveys a Max Meldrum, David Moore, Carol White, Philip White piece of art!
Nice little pied seedeater that we heard calling at the start of our walk, but didn't see until we came back through. Near the little village of Rio Negro, Colombia.

bracket stamp - I'll probably add something more to this tag, but for right now, I love looking at it.

Logan is taking swimming lessons. He's a Tiny Tot, and here he is in
his second day. Really, he should be a Water Baby, because he's only
2 1/2 and Tiny Tots start at 3 years old. But goodness knows he's as
big as all the Tiny Tots, so it's all good.
He's doing wonderfully! He tries to follow instructions. But as you
can see in this photo, none of the kids has much of an attention
span. Logan loves kicking, floating and blowing bubbles. And we're
working on him not climbing out of the pool to run over and get me to
join him in the water: "Mama! Mama! Mama! Mama!" This is he first
class without me right there with him, and I do appreciate that he
wants me to share in the fun!
So, two weeks from now, he'll be ready for the deep end!
While wonky I did enjoy doing this one. First of 3. Had minimal set up lines but then paint, then ink.
Andy taught me how to drive a stick shift today. I have previously driven a stick, but not enough to consider myself a pro. Not to boast.....but I did very well :) I like the blurry-ness of this picture, and I especially like Andy's facial expression. Haha.
After our driving lesson I made him dinner, and we watched Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Hah, it was awesome that I even talked him into watching it with me. Of course he sighed at the girly parts, but he was a trouper for the most part. :)
This is the result of having my daughter around while trying to teach a piano lesson...no good.

Casey is taking piano lessons in this great old house. He goes around the back and gets to play music on an old Steinway upright that came with the house.

A portrait of the extremely talented Ben Folds, performing at the O2 Academy in Glasgow last night with the reunited Ben Folds Five.
The lighting was rather problematic...very dark...had to ramp up the ISO...and generally low contrast...although this shot is fairly nice.
It's the third time I've seen Ben Folds...and he is one of the breed of performers who is great on CD...and even better as a live act.
My thanks are due to Alex Hewitt at The Scotsman for helping to arrange my photo pass.
As my grandmother nears her journey's end, and I feel a bit helpless, I decided my next few shots will be in honor of the lessons she has taught me.
She didn't have an easy beginning in life, very poor in the hills of Kentucky, she lost her first child, and yet went on to have two more healthy children and a legacy of love.
I can't recall, until her final years, my "Mama" being depressed. She usually tried to find joy in everything she did. She brought overwhelming joy to almost every person she encounted.
I learned from her to seek joy in the smallest places and the hardest times.
Stayed tuned for more lessons...

One of the only pictures of me riding that I'm currently happy with- my position has changed a whole lot through a winter of lunge lessons with a classical dressage instructor.

This was fun to draw. I painted the frisk with a toothpick for the entire feather, put in the back ground, removed the frisk, then added the highlights to the feather. Very fun to do.
