This Lesson’s Motmot was hanging out at the edge of a trail while walking around in the Monteverde area of Costa Rica. To our delight it showed absolutely no fear of us and allowed us to get some nice close-ups. He was still happily sitting in his tree when we departed.

These young adult bears had found a porcupine and the one on the right payed the price. Sometimes life's lessons are learned the hard way. On a positive note I have some face shots of the one on the right and it's eyes were unharmed.
The photograph being looked at here is actually very important. Unfortunately the name of the photographer is unknown. It was taken in 1912 and shows a women's life drawing class at the Launceston Technical College where Lucien Dechaineux (1869-1957) had been in charge of the art department. Dechaineux taught composition classes to the Tasmanian photographer Jack Cato. Have a look at this brilliant Cato portrait: searchthecollection.nga.gov.au/object/155474
But we know Cato didn't take this photograph because he was already working in London at the time.

However, the real significance of this photo is, (1) that the artists' model here is actually Lucien Dechaineux, and (2) that it shows Hope Evershed, the first female art teacher at the Launceston Technical College, guiding a group of female students in a lesson.

Little River, Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. Out of a lifting mist the water comes down, flanked and studded with perfect greens. It is pulled on a gradual gradient, and leaves a trail with each step, dragging a memory backward. The life of it's flow should be beautiful, but I find it a little cold, a little remote. Looking at the boulders, strewn and fallen in the flow, I think of my journey downriver. They are like pieces of me, broken off with each disappointment, each betrayal along the way. They stand like lessons learned, remnants of selflessness meets selfishness...bad decisions and weakness. They stand as a lesson to make myself harder, even if I don't want to be, because what is true in nature is not always true in me. But being true litters the streambed, back as far as I can see. If each had a name, they would stand as virtues lost, lessons learned. The perfect greens belie a bittersweet place; I'll leave it's beauty for another time.
I stole this title from the wonderful song Life Lessons by Wyatt Lopez. This father and son duo, were lovely to watch. Oak Island, NC

Had to post an alternative version of my "Daddy Lessons" picture as I really liked the colours (and felt like it deserved a close-up shot).
"You spend your whole life just to remember the sound
When the world was brighter, before we learned to dim it down
Call it survival, call it the freedom of will
Where breath is our own, our compass needle standing still"
I got a headache after this.
Life comes at us whether we are prepared or not and sometimes teaches us if we take the time to lisson. In this case an Autumn leaf is both the same as most Maple Leaves as it goes through its inexorable seasonal change. And, at the same time it is different and somewhat unique with respect to the way it is changing.
There is a life lesson here I thought, so take the time to listen said that little voice in my head. We all try to express ourselves as individuals to be noticed and at the same time most do not want to be on the fringe and too different. Life and a big lesson is delivered to my feet in a small way.
This Motmot spent some time hunting off this little perch. There was an admiring audience of birders. It was so tame I was half tempted to try to remove the grass from its head :)
Unliked Blue-capped Motmot, has a black cap (much like Wilson's Warbler). Seen on a non-birding trip. El Silencio Lodge & Spa. Bajos del Toro. CR.
All the lessons of history in four sentences: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.

If we travel simply to indulge ourselves we are missing some of the greatest lessons life has to offer. – Unknown
This moment is the exact reason why I do this. To sit on a cliff and look out to world with no distractions. Just you, God and the big wide world. A time to dream, a time to reminisce and reflect, a time to simply breathe.

Happy Fence Friday!
My grandson, Wyatt loves music and is interested in learning to play for real someday. He’s about 21/2-3 yrs. old. He’s picked up the guitar to play, my Native American Flutes and lately the keyboard. The best I can do is encourage him to play whatever he wants. He’ll at times wear my headphones and hum along to whatever is playing at time. He’s a delight. Gratitude and Kindness play a role in our relationship.

A slight re-working of an old image with a bit of a story.
My Son, a product of the metric age, asked me for some images that he could get printed for his office. He failed to notice that a lot of printers work in inches and was a little surprised when a rather large tube turned up. I now have a 36x36 inch print to try and frame!
