Students are taking advantage of the various study, research and hang-out spots available in the new Jack & Mary DeWitt Learning Commons. The $14 million facility officially opened for student use on Aug. 20 and houses the college’s library, peer tutoring and writing centers, audiovisual department and new coffee shop, Common Grounds. The facility was dedicated on Sept. 27.
The University Community attended an open house to celebrate the new Learning Commons located on the first floor of the Robert L. Carothers Library and Learning Commons. The open house was to introduce students, faculty and staff to the new area that boasts a full suite of resources.

I hand coded this as I was learning HTML in school. I used 2 CSS stylesheets (also hand coded), one for main pages, and one for a series of games I use with my students.
I needed a better way for my students to engage throughout the week between lessons. They also needed more attention to theory and technical details that we have time for in lesson.
In conjunction with the site, each student has their own page where I put up examples - video of them doing something correctly, instructions on something they are working on, etc.
There is a significant "Parent Area" in the site too, the Studio Documents page. Parents also have access to the individual student pages, and are encouraged to participate in the weekly routines.
The website and student pages has fostered more communication with the kids, and I get to do Information Literacy training on the sneaks! (What a combination...a librarian violin teacher!!!)
I used the site to learn about fonts and visual elements. I also learned about encoding music symbols using a language that simulates engraving, which is very important for a performer. Visual communication between document and musician is a critical relationship that is usually ignored when representing written music in electronic formats.
I learned the basics about manipulating images in Photoshop, and making a site useable for kids.
