On Sunday, November 27, 2016 two Venturer Companies came out for an introduction to Judo at the Burnaby Judo Club. Great fun was had, bodies were thrown, and on Monday, some tired, happy teenagers will wake up feeling a bit like a truck hit them :)
Photo taken down by The Moat, Thursley, Surrey. Two tight rope walkers were practicing and let me take a few photo's. Great skills by them.

Loyola students doing service learning at the Good Shepherd School are asked to sign up for a weekly spot helping facilitate activities during the school's Enrichment Program. In this program, Loyola students provide much-needed services to New Orleans youth in need of positive role models and mentors. Photos taken on November 12, 2013.
Loyola University New Orleans is now partnering with the center through its service learning program, placing college students there to help mentor, tutor and sometimes just listen to the kids. The students help with homework, coach youth basketball teams, lead music and arts activities, and give computer tutoring to children who might otherwise be exposed to unsafe or unhealthy alternatives. Cobent's Learning Management Systems (LMS) provide hundreds of powerful reports to align employee performance to organizational training and compliance goals.
I have spent 25 years of marriage not cooking because my husband is so good at it. Now at 50 I am stepping up, learning, and becoming capable in the kitchen. Yum!
I attempted to make a card modeled after the shaped cards I've seen many of you create. It was much more labor intensive than what I'm used to creating, and definitely a learning experience.
I wanted to make a gingerbread house, but I don't have any candy stamps, so I had to alter ones I already had. I intended it to be an entry for the Win a Day on the HA Blog contest, but I ended up only being able to use the candy cane image from this year's winter stamps.
The tree, message inside, and the blue "candies" are from the Merriest Wishes stamp set. (The candies are just the round part of the ornament cut in half.)
The candy canes are from the Cozy Moments set. I stamped them in white Staz-On on transparency so that I could have them going both directions.
The holly leaf is from a set of Christmas Tag stamps that I don't know the name of.
The red and green half-circle "candies" are from the Hello Circles set, embossed in white and cut in half.
The gumdrops are also from the Hello Circles set. I stamped the dotted stamp, embossed it in transparent glitter, and then cut a gumdrop shape.
The door is also from the Hello Circles set.
The shutters on the window are from (just a portion of) the Big Candles stamp set.
The smoke is the cloud stamp from the Sky's the Limit set.
The lower portion of the house is stamped with the Raindrop background in Versamark ink.
The white trim is glittered with clear glitter.
The "doorknobs" are also something I've recently learned- Coloring pearls with permanent pens to alter their colors.
The final technique I've recently learned is how to make "windows" using transparency.

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Well, the good ol' days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn
I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
(Lyrics from Tom Petty 'Learning to fly')
Roadtested several times this last week and various adjustments made in readiness for MOT test (very soon I hope)

Yasmina, 10, (orange t-shirt and purple skirt) who is challenged by a speech impediment and learning disabilities, studies at the UNCEF/Plan Learning Center in Kutupalong where she recently began attending class full time. Photograph taken in Kutupalong camp on 9 January 2019.
“Teacher Kamal was looking for me every day,” says Yasmina, referring to Plan teacher Kamal Hossein, who encouraged Yasmina’s mother to make sure that Yasmina attended learning center more frequently.
“I have a lot of friends. They help me study,” she continues.
At the request of teacher Kamal, Yasmina's mother agreed to allow Yasmina to take part in the Back to Learning campaign. She did the assessment in December. When Yasmina took the assessment, she needed extra time, but she completed it.
Now Yasmina feels very happy in the learning centre. She comes earlier than everyone else because she is so eager for the class to start.
Karen’s notes:
Yasmina has 4 siblings. Her father was killed in Myanmar. Her mother takes care of them all. She has eldest son 17, daughter 14, Yasmin 10, son 12 (Nurul Amin) - brother in the same class.
Yasmina has been coming to the learning centre since 25 August 2018. However, she was not attending regularly, she was coming on average 2 days a week. Now she is attending 6 days each week.
When Yasmina is learning in a group situation, she often doesn’t understand but when the teacher gives her individual attention, then she can follow the instructions. There are 3 students with disabilities in the learning centre and the teacher tried to give them all individual attention.
Yasmina practices with her handwriting but her hands shake a lot.
The teacher sees a little improvement in her comprehension. She is more social, she is learning how to greet people and her words are becoming a little clearer when she speaks.
She has two friends in the classroom – Noor Amin (her brother) and Koshmin. She likes rhyming classes.
Abia Hatan is her mother’s name. Her mother loves Yasmina. Her mother is very happy that Yasmina now has books and materials. She is encouraged. When Yasmina comes home, she studies. She reads her books.

Stayed at the zoo until closing time and was treated to some lovely views of the tigers playing. The only problem at that time of the evening is lack of light and shooting through thick glass. Luckily i managed to get a few through the hole in the fence and gate. The camera also has a bit of trouble focusing on fur but all in all one of the best hours photography for a long time.
