The more I learn about this Civil War general for the Union, the more I like him.
Although born and raised in Virginia, Major General George Thomas was a key leader for the United States during the Civil War. The Union general set up headquarters on Main Street, Lebanon, Kentucky. He formed the 10th Kentucky Infantry there and trained local recruits. It is to him and his efforts that modern Lebanon created a park and a life-sized sculpture by Rudy Ayoroa to remember him.
In the early years, as battle after battle went to the Confederacy, Thomas saw success for the United States. In January of 1862, Thomas, along with his 10th Kentucky Infantry of Central Kentuckians, routed Confederate General Zollicoffer at the Battle of Mill Springs, near Nancy, Kentucky.
Thomas didn't have much of a cheering squad. His Virginia family disowned him. Rebs considered him a traitor. Fellow Union officers were suspicious of him because of where he came from. The press paid little attention to him, despite his successes in Mill Springs, Perryville, critical Chicamauga, Peachtree Creek, Franklin, Atlanta and brilliant Nashville. In the scheme of things, Grant and Sherman were brighter stars.
A bold stand by Thomas and his troops stopped a Confederate rout at Chickamauga Creek, Tennessee. In essence, General Thomas was beaten, minced, and pounded on all sides. And yet he stood firm. "Rock of Chickamauga" is one of his nicknames.
Grant and Sherman thought of him as a brilliant strategist. He would plan right, wait as forces played into his hands, and then execute his plan with exactness, or act quickly if it looked as if it was as good as it was going to get. But he didn't believe in succumbing to brashness. When Thomas's troops moved against the enemy, the enemy was about to lose.
"In defense of freedom and the integrity of the Union," explained the Virginian and former slave-owner to his troops for a final time about their sacrifice as they celebrated the end of the Civil War in a Nashville parade.

Sometimes the more I learn, the more confused I get. I discovered this car sitting out in the back lot at the Volo Car Museum in Volo, Illinois. As I approached the car an attendant or employee walked out. Addressing the fellow, I guessed that this was a 1938 Ford. He quickly corrected me, stating it was a "39" Ford. "It sure doesn't look like any 39 Ford that I know and love", I said with a twinge of humor in my voice. "Well then I guess you just don't know your cars too well, do you" he replied somewhat caustically. (Hmmmm, such a pleasant fellow..............)
In any event, as you can see, I did take some pictures of the car – for three reasons; 1 - I wanted to take a picture or pictures of "something" because for darn sure I wasn't going to pay to go into any of their museums with the poor lighting and cars jammed tightly together. 2 - It was (is) a nice looking vintage car.........and 3 - I wanted to find out exactly what year and model car this was! Well, actually I found very little information about this Ford (from the internet) - nothing definitive, that is.
From the little info that I did manage to garner, apparently Ford had produced two completely different model coupes in 1939. One being the model and body style that I (and probably most collectors & hot rodders) are most familiar with (the coupe shown in the comments to the right) and this one, pictured. The only distinction between the two (that I could determine) is that the one in my picture was called a "business" or "standard" model, whereas the more popular model was Ford's Deluxe model. Now I ask you my friends why, when the country was still in the troughs of the Great Depression, combined with the fact that Ford Motor Company was reporting net losses, would they have tooled and manufactured two different body styles in one year's manufacture? Granted, it is reported that this model 39 Ford "Standard" utilized most of the 1938 model Ford parts - with the exception of a few cosmetic changes. Nevertheless, if sales were down (as they certainly were during the depression) why would you offer the public two different body styles when most people at the time, could not afford ANY car! Fortunately for Ford Motor Company and ultimately fortunately for the general public and future hot rod enthusiasts, the 1940 Ford was produced, as the U.S. general economy finally began a gradual upswing.
So this is about as much as I know in regards to this particular 1939 model Ford Coupe. If any vintage car aficionado is able to impart a little more information about this year and model Ford , I would welcome your comments.

Note: In the book "American Cars of the 1930s" (WARNE), for the year 1939, they said :
"Ford V8 Model 91A Standard 85HP had same sheet metal as 1938 DeLuxe....Coupe (Body Type 77A)." That's the Museum's model.
Yours is a 1939 De Luxe Coupe (77B).

An unconscious Dr. Pat Blake (Helena Carter) is carried aboard the Martian spaceship by a mutant guard.
Young David MacLean (Jimmy Hunt) sees a flying saucer disappear underground in a nearby sandpit and learns that aliens from the ship are taking over the minds of earthlings. His father becomes the first victim when he goes out to investigate and falls into the sandpit. David’s mother, a neighbor girl and others are soon taken over by the aliens, making them cold and ill-tempered. The story is told from the point of view of young David who begs the police and other people in town for help.
“Invaders from Mars”” was developed from a scenario by Richard Blake and based on a story treatment by John Tucker Battle, who was inspired by a dream recounted to him by his wife. The film was rushed into production to show in theaters before George Pal’s “War of the Worlds” (also 1953), becoming the first feature film to show aliens and their spacecraft in color. Slight departure from my usual shots...I shot this at the Nikon seminar I was at today, it was towards the end of the day. Most people were sneaking out early, but this kid was so focused on applying what he was learning, I loved it. Made me wish I'd started my photography years ago.
