I was working on two of my photographic projects, then Carnival arrived, I put aside what I had done up until then, and so I created this group of photographs; they are shots taken during the Carnival which took place in Taormina center (Taormina alta) and in Trappitello (fraction of Taormina, the plain part of Taormina, located towards the hinterland; there is also Taormina seaside, but this part is not was affected by the Carnival). Carnival, from a photographic point of view, has always interested me not for its allegorical floats, not for its beautiful or refined masks, but for the people who find themselves "behind the masks", for their emotions, the their ability to have fun, to uninhibit themselves, even in front of the camera. I photographed a detail of the float dedicated to the mayor of Taormina, Cateno De Luca, I photographed boys and girls from the masked groups who paraded through the city streets, as well as boys and girls not belonging to any group, who had fun with clothes invented for the 'occasion; despite having placed heterogeneous photographs, I mostly followed a theme that refers to a work by Andy Warhol, an iconic figure of Pop Art as well as being one of the most important artists of the 20th century, ideally linking myself for its creation to the allegorical float of Pop Art of Taormina.
I conclude, I dedicate this work to the flicker-friend White Angel, hoping to please her.

Stavo lavorando a due miei progetti fotografici, poi è arrivato il Carnevale, ho messo da parte quanto avevo fino ad allora fatto, ed ho così realizzato questo gruppo di fotografie; sono scatti realizzati durante il Carnevale che si è svolto a Taormina centro (Taormina alta) ed a Trappitello (frazione di Taormina, la parte in pianura di Taormina, sita verso l’entroterra; c’è anche Taormina mare, ma questa parte non è stata interessata dal Carnevale). Il Carnevale, dal punto di vista fotografico, mi ha sempre interessato non per i suoi carri allegorici, non per le sue maschere belle o ricercate che siano, ma per le persone che si trovano “dietro le maschere”, per le loro emozioni, la loro capacità di divertirsi, di disinibirsi, anche davanti la macchina fotografica. Ho fotografato un dettaglio del carro dedicato al sindaco di Taormina, Cateno De Luca, ho fotografato ragazzi e ragazze dei gruppi in maschera che sfilavano per le vie cittadine, come ragazzi e ragazze non appartenenti a nessun gruppo, che si divertivano con vestiti inventati per l’occasione; pur avendo messo fotografie eterogenee, ho seguito maggiormente un tema che fa riferimento ad un lavoro di Andy Warhol, figura iconica della Pop Art oltre che essere uno dei più importanti artisti del XX secolo, agganciandomi idealmente per la sua realizzazione, al carro allegorico della Pop Art di Taormina.
Concludo, dedico questo lavoro alla flicker-friend White Angel, sperando di farle cosa gradita.
Buzz Aldrin is deploying the Solar Wind Collector (SWC), a foil sheet which he is pointing at the Sun. Note the word 'Shade' printed on the bottom of the back side. The word 'Sun' is printed on the sunward side. At the end of the EVA, after leaving the SWC exposed to the Sun for about 1 hour and 17 minutes, Buzz will roll up the foil and pack it in a bag for analysis back on Earth. Note the considerable clearance between the bottom of the Descent Engine bell and the surface beneath it. Little West Crater is near the horizon on the lefthand side of the image. Note the pattern of scratch marks running from the MESA toward the lower left that were created by the TV cable as Neil Armstrong took the camera away from the LM on the tripod. Neil's footprints are generally to the right of the cable scratches as he moved sideways out from the Lunar Module. Several potentially foot-grabbing loops remain in the cable. The rendezvous radar and various antennas on the top of the ascent stage are labeled in a detail ( 223k ).

"Who is Robyn Gigl?", one may ask. . . For the benefit of those who may be unfamiliar with her, Robyn Gigl happens to be a very special woman, and one of Joni's heroes. First and foremost, Robyn is an activist transwoman and a licensed attorney in the State of New Jersey, where she has practiced law for more than 40 years. She has been an active litigator, representing clients in both the state and federal courts. Robyn has been honored by the ACLU of New Jersey as well as the New Jersey Pride Network for her work on behalf of the LGBTQ community. Robyn has been an active member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, where among other things, she is a member of its Diversity Committee and served as a Past Chair of the State Bar's LGBTQ Rights Section. She was also appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to the Court's Committee on Diversity Inclusion and Community Engagement. Additionally, she is also a member of the Board of Directors of Garden State Equality, New Jersey's largest LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Organization, and a frequent lecturer in academic and corporate circles on diversity issues.
However, Robyn is much more than an influential civil rights attorney. She is also an acclaimed author of four novels in which she chronicles the challenges and adventures of her protagonist, a New Jersey criminal defense attorney who happens to be a transwoman, just like Robyn, although the books are not autobiographical in nature. Her first book, entitled "BY WAY OF SORROW" is a page-turning legal thriller revolving around murders and a corrupt political system. It was well received by the New York Times Book Review, which called it, "An emotionally resonant debut . . . and quietly groundbreaking." Joni has read the book as well and awards it five stars, as it transcends the usual transgender genres.
Robyn has since published three more novels in the series with the same transgender defense attorney as her protagonist: "SURVIVOR'S GUILT", "REMAIN SILENT", and "NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH". Her protagonist, "Erin McCabe", is destined to become one of the most famous fictional transgender characters in literature, if she isn't already!
So one might be wondering how a flirty T-Girl like Joni wound up connecting with an influential Transwoman of considerable gravitas like Robyn? Well, Joni must at the outset credit her friend Emily Jo Donatello, who is also a good friend of Robyn and served as an intermediary. Emily Jo had posted a couple of items on her photostream touting Ms. Gigl's books, and the name "Gigl" rang a bell in Joni's memory bank. Joni's curiosity was piqued and after conducting some research, Joni advised Ms. Donatello that she believed she was acquainted with Robyn from her distant past; a belief which Emily Jo confirmed, and who facilitated their subsequent meeting by providing Joni with Robyn's email address. Thereafter, Joni contacted Robyn and arranged to meet her over dinner on one of Joni's recent trips back to New Jersey where they reconnected.
It turns out that Robyn and Joni graduated from the same high school one year apart, where they were actually teammates running on the track team, Although they were teammates, they ran in different circles, so to speak. Robyn was a short, but swift-footed sprinter and Joni was a skinny cross-country/distance runner and as such, they had minimal contact with each other, even though they trained on the same track and rode on the same team bus to meets. Ironically, Robyn returned to running and the former sprinter has since run in several marathons! Joni, on the other hand, hung up her spikes after after high school and has remained retired, especially with a pair of hip replacements.
Nevertheless, they had much in common, not only as fellow high school alumni and teammates, but professionally as well, and of course as transgender women. It all made for interesting conversation and a very enjoyable dinner. Needless to say Joni is very proud to know Robyn and is in awe of everything she has accomplished.
One other thing about Robyn that Joni found to be fascinating is the fact that Robyn is the first transgender woman that Joni knew from the past before she became transgender. Joni knows nothing about the background of any of the various transgender women she is friendly with on Flickr, or whom she has met in person, other than what those individuals have revealed about themselves to Joni. There was simply no prior context for any TG woman that Joni knows or has ever met, until Joni met Robyn. Joni has often wondered how many others she has known from high school, college, grammar school, or from her neighborhood growing up, etc., who might have evolved to become transgender women. She has known a number who became gay or lesbians, (including a former high school girlfriend!) but she had never known anyone other than herself who became transgender, until she reconnected with Robyn. It should be noted that there was nothing about Robyn in high school that would have led Joni to suspect that she might one day become transgender or gay for that matter, not that Joni knew anything about transgenders at that time. It's not as if Robyn acted effeminate or anything like that, although Robyn says she knew from an early age that she wanted to be a woman. Like many of us, Robyn was happily married and helped to raise three kids while remaining in the closet for many years . . . untl she wasn't in the closet anymore. . . . .
One other thing about Robyn Gigl - She's very sweet!
For those who are interested in learning more about Robyn, especially other transgender individuals, as well as those who are trying to learn and understand what makes transgenders
tick (and really who shouldn't be?) one can simply Google her name and additional information about her, including a Wikipedia page, will appear. . . . . Robyn is truly an amazing woman and Joni is happy to have had the opportunity to meet up wth her and reconnnect, and she is honored to have Robyn as a friend!

The SR 99 tunnel boring machine’s trailing gear takes shape in Japan in fall 2012. The trailing gear will house the various support systems that crews need to keep the machine operating smoothly as it tunnels through the earth. The machine, including the trailing gear, will be about 326 feet long. Tunneling starts in summer 2013. For Yule this year, my aunt gave me a beautiful Word of the Day calendar -- the kind where the same words spiral through every month as the dates and days of the week change and shift around them. I keep it on the windowsill by my desk, and now each day when I sit down to work, the first thing I do is shuffle the little cards into place and sit for a moment contemplating that day's word.
It's the second month of the year, and already the practice is deepening. What praise do I have to give today, the 10th of February? What new things will I have to praise when the tenth rolls around again?
I love what Venkatesh Rao says about the role of ritual in helping us ground in meaningful relationship with the world around us. "Generalities are scaffolding that help me find, appreciate or relate to fertile particulars," he says, and I find myself nodding along and saying, Yes! Exactly!
To dig my soul-toes deeper into this fertile soil, I've decided that for the next 40 days, I'm going to pair my Word of the Day practice with reflections on the #UULent Photo-A-Day:
"As Unitarian Universalists, we share theological roots with our Christian siblings, who observe Lent from Ash Wednesday until Easter. However, rather than a practice of self-denial, we offer this opportunity to spend the Season of Lent engaged in a spiritual discipline of deep intention and appreciation of our world, our place in it, and an openness to Grace in our daily lives."

很高興能獲得新光三越國際攝影大賽佳作獎項！我想這也是對今年才結束的旅行最好的總結。澳洲旅遊的一年中認識各國留學生和單獨旅人，很多人覺得出國讀書是件幸福的事，但什麼都要一肩扛起的留學生和旅人，每天要面對的很大一部份是如何處理—孤獨。很有幸可以為幾位不同國家的旅人和留學生拍照，把照片作為餞別禮，希望他們都能在一片黑色孤獨裡，找到自己的發光位置。
攝影心得：
用很少的光源或只用手電筒畫出需要的曝光位置，藉由畫面較暗的方式詮釋孤獨的感覺，雖然這是比較一般的表現手法但卻能凸顯主體，使用手電筒畫出曝光位置是之前沒有嘗試過的拍攝方式，藉由旅行認識的英國攝影朋友相互交流下有初步的概念，正所謂讀萬卷書不如行萬里路。

Why I Took These Pictures :
I am absolutely delighted to have received an honorable mention at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photo-Taking Contest! It comes as the perfect conclusion to a year of traveling in Australia, from where I returned only recently. During my time down under I got to know students and people traveling alone from all over the world. Many people believe that going abroad to study is a great thing, but they forget that whether you’re a student or a solitary traveler, you’ll be spending a lot of time every day dealing with a very simple and basic problem: how to ward off, or adapt to, loneliness. I was very fortunate to get a chance to take pictures of a number of foreign students and travelers, and I made prints for them as a parting present in the hope these photos will shine like a guiding light for them, helping them to find their place in a strange land.
What I Learned :
I deliberately underexposed these pictures, and what little light I needed came from a flashlight focused on the main subject, while the much darker rest of each photo serves to underline the sense of loneliness or isolation. Although this is a pretty common technique, it still serves very well to emphasize my theme, and personally I had never before experimented with using a flashlight as the sole source of light. I learned the basics of this approach during conversations with a photographer friend from England who I met abroad—our vivid and fruitful exchange bore witness to the old adage that traveling around the world is a better way to learn than reading a thousand books.
