Learn About The Barking Owl
Scientific Name: Ninox connivens
What do they look like?
The Barking Owl is a medium-sized (35 to 45 cm) hawk-owl. Adult Barking Owls are grey-brown above, with white spots on the wings, whitish below, and heavily streaked with grey-brown. The head is almost entirely grey-brown, and the eyes are large and yellow.
Where do they live?
Barking Owls are most common in savannah woodland, although they also inhabit well-forested hill and riverside woodlands. They are widely distributed throughout Australia, although are absent from central areas. They have a distinct preference to be close to water.
Barking Owls are more often heard than seen, which is typical of most nocturnal birds.
What do they eat?
The Barking Owl feeds on a variety of small to medium-sized mammals, such as, birds, reptiles and insects. Prey is located either from the air or from an exposed perch.
Most hunting is performed in the first few hours of the night and the last hours before dawn. Occasionally, birds may even be seen hunting in daylight. The Barking Owl prefers to hunt in clearings, including waterways and other open areas. Most prey appears to be taken on the ground or when perched.
Behaviour:
Barking Owls have an extremely characteristic loud and remarkably dog-like double bark, sounding similiar to 'wuf wuf' or 'wuk wuk'.
A dog-like snarling is used in aggression by both sexes near the nest. Barking Owls are also notorious for their "screaming woman" call, best described as a scream of terrifying intensity, which sounds remarkably life like. This is not a common call and more likely to be used outside the breeding season. Its significance is unknown.
Reproduction:
Barking Owls breed from August to October each year. A single brood of two to three young is raised in a season. The nest site is an open hollow in a tree trunk, loosely lined with sticks and other wood debris.
The female incubates the eggs, while the male supplies the food. The young hatch after about one month and leave the nest after a further 40 to 50 days. Young Barking Owls remain dependent on their parents for several months, and will remain in the family group until a few months before the next breeding season.

The Simeon Farwell House, part of the Evanston Lakeshore Historic District (1890). The 1890 Queen Anne was designed by John M. Van Osdel. Farwell was born in Campbelltown, NY in 1831, a descendent of Henry Farwell, a founder of Concord, MA. He moved with his family to Ogle County in 1838; his father was one of the first settlers in the county. Farwell attended school at Mt. Morris Seminary and moved to Chicago in 1849. He served as Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court for two years. After briefly working as a clerk for the George Smith banking house, he decided to become a dry goods merchant. He accepted a position with Cooley, Wadsworth & Co. to learn the trade. He was bookkeeper for the buisness until 1860, and was named a partner in 1870. Farwell's brother John V. Farwell served as partner from 1860, when the store was renamed Cooley, Farwell & Co. In 1865, the store was again renamed to John V. Farwell & Co. Several notable merchants worked at the company, including Marshall Field and Levi Leiter. Simeon became Vice President of the company in 1890 and President in 1900. He also served as a director of the Metropolitan National Bank. Another brother, Charles B. Farwell, became a US Senator, serving from 1887 to 1891.

Here is more proof that we humans live with majestic animals in urban areas without even knowing they are there - AND without major problems - if we let them be. Leopards are the most adaptable and the most persecuted cat on our planet. Shot for my @natgeo Leopard story - A leopard cub just finished drinking at a waterhole where the caretaker of a local shrine lives. The man has goats and chickens that drink the water during the day - at night he puts the livestock in his house for safety and the leopards come to drink - in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai India. ift.tt/1Qh2INg The residents of Mumbai use the park during the day - kids playing cricket, couples walking after work or school - others just walking in nature hearing the symphony of the park - the bird calls - leaving the bustling city of over 21 million people. But at night the leopards come out - in the core of the park they have a substantial food source of deer and other species - but they walk silently on the trails at night close to apartment buildings. In one instance I met a man who had lived in this building for 10 years and did not know there were leopards here! I saw him every night walking with friends getting some exercise - two weeks later he tells me he was up at 3:30AM and looks out his window and sees a leopard for the first time! Our natural world is simply perfect and incredibly amazing. And without it we as humans cannot survive - we need to wake up and save the nature that we depend on for our oxygen, water and food - life itself.
