one of my favorite spots in the new place. a light filled alcove to store our coats and hats with a perfect spot for my sweet little jade plant that just about died at the last place. turns out that jade plants (well most plant, actually) don't like basements, even if you stick them next to the only natural light you can find. she's the only plant that survived the last place. she's a hardy one.

i have also decided that this little cove will help me learn about back lighting things.

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Softball was a little more than “just a game,” Nov. 24, as People to People International, Pyeongtaek Chapter, and Humphreys Garrison hosted the PTPI Korean-American Friendship Softball Games, at Soldier Field.

“Today we strengthen our bond through athletic competition with our Korean friends and neighbors” said Brig. Gen. Darryl Williams, the Second Infantry Division deputy commanding general for support, in his opening remarks. “Today is not about who wins and who loses, it’s about coming together and having fun.”

Following remarks, the opening ceremony continued with Korean traditional dancing, some photo opportunities and the official opening of the games.

“We were surprised of how big of a turnout it was with the different officials,” said Sgt. Matthew Hanzlik, of the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion team.

There were several teams that played ball during the preliminary rounds, before the main tournament that took place. A total of seven teams participated; four Korean (two each men and women) and three American (all men’s).

“This is the sixth time we’ve done this tournament” said Yoo, Sung-ok, president of the local PTPI chapter, “and I believe that we can contribute to the friendship between United States Forces Korea Soldiers and the citizens of Pyeongtaek City through this kind of combined event.”

“It’s a lot of fun out here,” said Air Force Staff Sgt. Lynsey Bruzzi, assigned to the 51st SFS at Osan Airbase. “It’s nice that something as simple as softball can bring everyone together. I’m out here playing with Koreans and the language barrier is not an issue.”

“It’s cool,” said Oh, Se-won, 12, who was attending and watching his father play for the Kia Motors team.

“My father bats many home runs,” he added. “I like this place. I like Americans. My dream is to be in the U.S. Army someday.”

Lunch was served to all participants and there was an awards ceremony at the end, where Col. Darin S. Conkright, Humphreys garrison commander, and Col. Walter T. Rugen, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade commander, presented trophies to the winners and most valuable players. In the men’s bracket, Humphreys United finished first and Kia placed second. On the women’s side, Pyeongtaek United Team B placed first and Pyeongtaek United Team A finished second.

Lee, Kyong-won, the national president of PTPI Korea, summed up the days’ events by saying, “Thank you for taking time to be out here, to make this softball tournament a success. I hope you enjoyed your game today. Thank you so much for your friendship and support.”

The painted hills of the Sutton Mountain Wilderness Study Area in central Oregon is one of those BLM gems that almost no-one outside the local area has heard about. The lower part of the WSA has exposures of the same clay formations that are found in the much smaller but equally spectacular John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Painted Hills Unit, which lies just across the valley.

The upper peak of Sutton Mountain itself rises 2,000 feet above the valley with layers of ash and basalt building to the crest. The area is near the John Day River about an hour northeast of Prineville.

The Sutton Mountain (28,872 acres) Wilderness Study Areas is comprised of public lands which are under consideration for wilderness designation by Congress. These lands area managed by the BLM in a manner which maintains their suitability for preservation as wilderness.

When visiting, we ask the everyone bring along the 10 essentials and respect the following regulations:

-Vehicle Use: Motorized vehicle use is limited to roads signed as designated routes as depicted on the map.

-Cross-country travel on foot or horseback is allowed; however, cross-country vehicle travel is strictly prohibited.

-Violations of motor vehicle use restrictions are subject to a fine up to $1000 and/or imprisonment.

-Leave a clean camp by practicing the “Pack it In, Pack it Out” ethic and leave the site better than as you found it.

-Give wildlife a break: camp away from watering areas.

-Use dead and down wood for campfires; the cutting of live vegetation or standing dead trees is prohibited.

-Obtain landowner permission before crossing private land.

KAKEGAWA, Japan – Swirling sand obscures the sunlit sky as a UH-1 “Huey” helicopter touches down on a freshly cut baseball field. Mere moments pass before the Huey’s Japan Ground Self-Defense Force crew chief dismounts from his metallic steed and sprints toward four U.S. Army Soldiers bearing a stretcher. The crew chief’s commanding shout cuts through the roar of rotor blades, springing his American partners into action. With swift, expert precision, the stretcher bearers carry their wounded comrade—a mannequin sporting an Army Combat Uniform—to the Huey.

Casualty evacuation was one of the many training missions orchestrated during Shizuoka Prefecture’s annual Comprehensive Disaster Drill conducted here Sept. 4, 2016. The drill demonstrated the emergency response capabilities of a diverse collection of local, regional, national and international organizations. Its static displays, interactive classes and practical workshops conducted throughout Kakegawa also provided lifesaving lessons for the city’s citizens.

“The people of Shizuoka Prefecture have organized this annual exercise for 35 years,” said Yuka Ogura, a supervisor for the prefectural government’s Emergency Countermeasures Division. “Although the drill’s size and scope has become increasingly complex with the inclusion of specialized government agencies and advanced equipment, the individual residents play the most pivotal role in preparing for the worst.”

Among the participants stood a dozen Soldiers assigned to U.S. Army Japan, I Corps (Forward) and Public Health Command-Pacific. The group packed two Humvees with fuel, rations and medical supplies before embarking on their 120-mile journey from Camp Zama to Kakegawa.

“The U.S. Army has actively participated in this drill since 2010,” said Maj. Donald Kim, U.S. Army liaison officer for to the JGSDF's Eastern Army and Central Readiness Force. “It demonstrates our capabilities in humanitarian response assistance by testing our troops’ expertise in first aid, supply distribution, convoy operations and medical evacuation. Our participation also sends a strong message to our Japanese partners that we are willing and able to provide immediate support when disaster strikes.”

“Since the great east Japan earthquake and tsunami [in 2011], local communities have a greater understanding and openness to collaborate with international agencies in the aftermath of a major disaster,” added Ogura. “The U.S. Army has proved on many occasions that it has the talent and resources to respond to any emergency in the country.”

Throughout the exercise, the American Soldiers worked closely with their Japan Ground Self-Defense Force partners from the 34th Infantry Regiment, Eastern Army, JGSDF. The respective units set up their base of operations at a local gym where they combined resources to coordinate convoy routes, establish mobile communication sites, and set up supply distribution points.

“The JGSDF and U.S. Army have specialized equipment and highly trained personnel that many of our civilian counterparts cannot afford,” said JGSDF Sgt. 1st Class Miura Hatoshi, a squad leader in the 2nd Company, 34th Infantry Regiment. “However, these assets are practically worthless if we don’t properly use them. That’s why it’s essential that we seize every opportunity to train together so we may make the right decisions together.”

The drill concluded with a closing ceremony at a demolished neighborhood used as a training site for search, rescue and recovery operations. Standing alongside hundreds of service members, firefighters, police officers and first responders, Heita Kawakatsu, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, expressed his appreciation for the American participants.

“The citizens of Shizuoka Prefecture and I are grateful for the support from the U.S. Army and Marines,” said Kawakatsu. “Your skill and professionalism were second only to your care and compassion.”

As the troops shook hands and exchanged small tokens of appreciation with their gracious hosts, Kim reflected on his team’s immense effort, energy and enthusiasm.

“I’m proud of these men,” said Kim. “Many of them have Military Occupation Specialties far separated from the desired skillsets for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. However, their proficiency in their basic warrior tasks and their eagerness to learn from the experts shows our Japanese partners that they can count on us anytime, anywhere.”

"Beginner's Mind is approaching things with that wonderful, fresh, open spirit of a child... Children look at something and they just want to learn it. They soak in the information. They don't worry about looking bad... It's an incredibly easy thing to have a beginner's mind when we're a beginner. But then we start to be told we're good and we start to feel proficient. Then we start to have our ego attached. And that's when things get dangerous." - The Art Of Learning by Joshua Waitzkin

Read this today and it touched a chord in me, because I do feel like a child seeing the world for the first time lately. As I rediscover my passion in photography and acquire new skills in using a DSLR, I'm filled with excitement and apprehension. Excitement because I'm learning every day, apprehension because I worry that I will not be good enough.

This was taken in New York in 2004. I can't wait to see how I've changed - for better or for worse - when I test my skills again in Japan soon.
