CAMP HUMPHREYS — There was no trash-talking on Saturday, Sept. 17 as the United Service Organizations hosted a community clean-up at AK Plaza.
“We started it last month and the reason we are doing this is to establish good relations with the Korean community and to show a good image for the U.S. Army,” stated USO Center Manager Tami Hager, who heard good reports while she and others were out volunteering their time for this monthly project.
Not only did USO volunteers lend a helping hand but there was also support from Better Opportunities for Single (and unaccompanied) Soldiers volunteers.
“I feel good!” stated volunteer Sgt. 1st Class Terry Freeman, who belongs to the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. “It was a good turn out and a lot of participation to help clean up.”
“It’s good community service and I love to give back to the community” said Staff Sgt. Alex Quanon, which belongs to the 95th Blood Support Detachment. “I love a clean environment and there is no better way to contribute to that than doing this.”
The community clean-up started at 9:30 a.m. and takes about two hours. They meet at the front gate and after all the hard work, the USO showed appreciation to the volunteers by providing refreshments afterward.
“Honestly…,” stated Pfc. Suzette LaFrance, 95th BSD, “it was fun to pick up the trash and socialize.” She then went on to say, “I’m definitely looking forward to getting something to eat after all this excitement!”
“I feel like it’s a good opportunity to help contribute to a better environment in Korea,” stated Spc. Daniel Pellegrini, 95th BSD. He also continued “I would like to encourage my fellow soldiers to contribute a few hours towards USO and other volunteering opportunities.”
For more information on how you can participate in the next community clean-up, call DSN 753-6281.

Wordstar, The Grandfather of Word Processors….
My first personal computer was a Sanyo model 1150, CP/M machine. It came with a word processing program on several 5 1/4 inch disks named WordStar.
WordStar was manufactured by MicroPro and was part of a suite of programs that also included database and spreadsheet programs. WordStar was released in 1979 and was the most powerful word processing software of its day.
I remember the formatting commands of WordStar required as if it were yesterday: Control b ^B for bold, Control s ^S for underline. If you forgot to properly pair up the control codes, your document ended up a mess.
Here is a short sentence with boldface and underline code: ^B^SThe Great Gatsby.^S^B
WordStar was very confusing and difficult to learn. It was a powerful tool during an era when most of us were just being introduced to word processing. Mastering these wonders of modern technology required a new mindset. There was a major learning curve because using a personal computer was very cutting edge in the early 1980’s.
Though it wasn't easy, once you mastered the control key system all other word processors seemed simple. I am writing this description with Microsoft Word on my Mac and I have been using Word for many years. Today, it is the industry leader. However, WordStar was the leader back then.
Although I use Word, I still have a directory on my Windows based computer (in the closet) for my old WordStar program. I never boot it up, but keep it for old-times sake. As a closing note on this subject, do you remember how cool the first spelling checkers were? The spell checker in WordStar was SpellStar. Back in the early days MicroPro’s suite of software programs retailed for about $500.00.
This image is of the back side of a flyer I created during the early days of computers. My plan was to teach newbies how to use Wordstar. I had a few students sign up.

Learn to Read and Write Mandarin Chinese
1. Learn Pinyin. Pinyin is a kind of Chinese writing system. The letters of Pinyin originate from the Rome alphabet, not the Chinese characters. Pinyin is very useful for Chinese learners, even if you haven't learned traditional Chinese characters, you can learn to read and write mandarin with Pinyin. There are many Chinese textbooks with Pinyin, as well as learning materials. Although Pinyin is derived from the Rome alphabet, English native speakers cannot get hang of its pronunciation immediately. Therefore, it is very important to have a correct pronunciation guidance when learning Pinyin.
2. Learn to read Chinese characters. Although recognizing Chinese characters is not a necessity for learning Chinese, many people are attracted by Chinese characters because Chinese characters will make them feel closer to traditional Chinese culture. However, in fact, it is not easy to recognize Chinese characters. In order to understand the contents of the Chinese newspapers, an ordinary Chinese reader needs to familiarise himself with about 2000 Chinese characters - and this is just the beginning. It is said that there are more than 50000 Chinese characters (though some of them are no longer used). The greatest advantage of recognizing Chinese characters is that you can learn more about other cultures, including Cantonese, Japanese and Korean. These languages, though different from Chinese in pronunciation, use Chinese characters (or simplified versions of Chinese characters) in writing.
3. Learn to write Chinese characters. Once you learn to read Chinese characters, you may be interested in the writing of Chinese characters. Learning chinese writing is a complex skill. It requires patience and a little sense of art. The first step in learning Chinese characters writing is to learn the "basic unit", that is, the independent radicals, which form the basis of Chinese characters. There are 214 radicals in Chinese, some radicals are single words, others are just part of complex Chinese characters. When writing Chinese characters, the stroke order is very important. You must follow certain rules - for example, from top to bottom, from left to right, first horizontal and then vertical. If the stroke is not correct, then the word you write is wrong.
4. Read Chinese. If you want to improve the level of Chinese reading, you need to read at least 15-20 minutes a day. First of all, you can read some children's books (basically with Pinyin) to improve your reading level, and of course, you can also find some good materials on the Internet to read. You can also use the Chinese you learned in your daily life. You can try to read the Chinese tags on food, or ask a waiter at a restaurant for a Chinese menu. Once you have improved your reading level, you can get some Chinese newspapers (Chinese version) and try your best to read the articles. This is also a good way to help you understand Chinese culture and current affairs in China.
5. Learn to write Mandarin Chinese every day. In order to improve your Chinese writing level, you can write something in Chinese every day, no matter in Pinyin or in Chinese character. One way is to write a Chinese diary every day, write something about the weather, write what you feel or what you have done every day. If you are brave enough, find some friends who speak Chinese to help you check if there are any mistakes. Or you can also find a Chinese pen pal to write to each other. This is a win-win way, you can improve your Chinese level, and your pen pal can improve his or her English level. You can also ask your pen pal to help you modify your letter and send it back to you in reply. The last way to practice Chinese writing ability is to make a Chinese list, such as shopping lists, or Chinese tags for the household objects.

CAMP HUMPHREYS — The 2012 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Kickoff Ceremony was held here, Sept. 18. The event took place in the Post Exchange atrium at noon and lasted till 1 p.m. Many Soldiers and representatives of donation funds and the United Service Organizations were in attendance to celebrate the event.
David Satterfield, the Area III CFC coordinator, welcomed everyone to the ceremony and introduced the Garrison Commander Col. Darin S. Conkright who delivered information about last year as well as this year’s CFC.
The installation commander emphasized the importance of CFC-O by calling it “the best way for the organization to ensure that money goes back into the system because by doing it you donate to FSYP (Family Support & Youth Programs). It means 100 percent of the pledges that you donate will go directly back into the garrison.”
Conkright also noted the success of USAG Humphreys in the CFC-O campaign last year.
“Last year USAG-Humphreys/Area III raised nearly $320,000 – a remarkable intake of donations that set the standard for the entire peninsula, and resulted in us winning the 2012 PACOM (Pacific Command) Special Merit Award, the third acquisition of this award by USAG-Humphreys/Area III since 2005,” said Conkright.
The garrison commander went on to congratulate the winners of the 2012 CFC Coin Design Contest - David Satterfield, Edward Johnson, Jon Grayson, James Clark and Chin-Kyong Yi of USAG Humphreys.
“In March 2012, the CFC-O held a Coin Design Contest, open to all Department of Defense employees and their Family Members. The purpose of the contest was to select a unique design for the 2012 CFC-O contributor coin representing the theme of the campaign: ‘Serve To Honor Your Country. Give Because You Care.’ The winning design will be replicated on a coin and distributed to select contributors to the 2012 CFC-O this fall,” said Conkright.
To conclude the event Conkright thanked everyone for participating and wished them a “happy CFC season.”
