CAMP HUMPHREYS – “Kimjang” is an event where kimchi, the ubiquitous food in Korean cuisine, is made in preparation for winter. However, making kimchi is a very labor-intensive process so many neighbors divide up the different parts of this process and then make a huge batch for the entire village. In the past, Kimjang was a way to survive the harsh winters and build ties with neighbors.
The Camp Humphreys Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program and the Mannam Volunteer Association worked together to organize a Kimjang event, Dec. 1, for those who wanted to volunteer making and giving away kimchi.
More than 30 Soldiers and civilians of Humphreys Community took part and experienced making kimchi and shared it with the elderly and underprivileged people of Gaemi Maeul, located on the northwest slope of Mount Inwangsan, in Hongje-dong, Seoul.
“The purpose of our Kimjang event was to share the meaning of love and the true meaning of helping, giving, and sharing,” said Charleen Hull, Mannam’s South Branch team leader. “We wanted to share with the people of Gaemi Village, who are financially struggling and unable to support themselves due to being elderly or physically disabled. Many of the elders live alone and go to the hospital every day. They are unable to cook for themselves and too proud to ask for help.”
Specialist Kareen K. Medeiros, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys and who serves as the Camp Humphreys BOSS President, said “The BOSS program decided to get together with Mannam for this project because I thought it would be a good thing for some of our military personnel to get involved with the Korean community and to give back. In my opinion it (the Kimjang event) is very important. We are here overseas, in a host country and having to serve with the Korean military. I feel it is a wonderful opportunity for our single Soldiers to come and experience what everyday living is like here in Korea and what better way to do that than to see some of the traditions themselves.”
Private Tony Harrington, assigned to 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, came to the event with his friends and enjoyed making kimchi for the very first time.
“The reason I came here is because I met a lot of good friends during the ‘Troops for Trash’ and they talked me into coming and making kimchi,” said Harrington. “This is my first time in Korea. I have only been here for (about a ) month and a half and I find it quite fine. During my stay here I try to learn more about this country and this is my first experience with kimchi. It is worth a try. So I’m having fun and enjoying making it.”

January 22nd at 4:00 pm – Reimagining the War of 1812 - “Redcoats’ Revenge” with Col. David Fitz-Enz
What if, on September 11, 1814, the United States had lost the close-run battle that Winston Churchill called the “most decisive” of the War of 1812? With a victory at Plattsburgh, would the British have eventually been able to regain control of their former colonies? Redcoats’ Revenge brings the most successful field commander in history, the Duke of Wellington, to North America in 1814 and presents a montage of the personalities and battles, real and quite possible, of the War of 1812. With a clever and compelling premise, this exciting alternate history will enthrall readers and reveal just how close the US was to becoming a British colony once again.
Col. Fitz Enz was a regular army officer for 30 years. Among his combat decorations is the Soldiers Medal, the army’s highest award for life saving at extreme risk. His unit operated the Moscow Hot Line for 3 presidents. His literary awards include The Distinguished Book Prize from the Army Historical Foundation and the Military Order of Saint Louis from The Knights Templar for contributions to military literature.
February 19th at 4:00 pm - The War of 1812 in American Caricature with Dr. Allison Stagg
This lecture will consider key events from the War of 1812 by exploring satirical visual imagery. Political cartoons were printed with immediacy to capitalize on sensational events and to mock prominent politicians and figures, while extolling pride in the American cause. Caricatures of this period although printed in haste, show how people in America responded to the War of 1812. Rarely are such prints considered in American history dialogue, yet such images are vital documents that provide viewers with the opinions of the every-day citizen in the early 1800s. In focusing on caricatures produced during this period, this lecture considers the “peoples story” of the War of 1812 through a series of visually humorous images.
Allison Stagg received a Ph.D. in Art History from University College London. Her work has been supported by numerous grants, including awards from the New-York Historical Society, New York Public Library, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Dr. Stagg is a recipient of the Jane and Morgan Whitney fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art 2011-12 to edit her Ph.D. dissertation, “The Art of Wit: Political Caricature in the United States 1780-1830” for publication.
All programs above are free and take place at the 1907 Van Norden Carriage House. Seating is limited so reservations are required.
Landscape lovers travelled to the old silver mining town of Aspen, Colorado this past June 23rd to join The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) for an unparalled series of private garden visits curated by
TCLF Co-Chair Kurt Culbertson, President of Design Workshop. The 2012 Aspen Garden Excursion, featured no less than 6 award-winning residential designs, all incorporating sustainable features ranging from water conservation to native plant choices responsive to the climate and ecology of the area. The sites were all breathtaking, and participants took in dramatic views from a preserve overlook to a streamside estate, from a contemporary mountain garden to a cascade garden. As one of the highlights, Kurt arranged for Jeff Berkus, architect of The Aspen Institute’s Doerr-Hosier Center, to lead a tour through the grounds which include Herbert Bayer’s striking 1955 Marble Garden and environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy’s red sandstone installation “Stone River.” Our group travelled from McLain Flats to Red Mountain and saw a great breadth of topography and creative treatments while also learning about the agricultural history and rich heritage of Aspen and its environs. The day was a great success.

This image is not about a simple laugh. It is about the moment when a group closes ranks against someone and turns humiliation into spectacle. The phone becomes the center of the scene, the device that captures, amplifies, and delivers the target to the complicit gaze of the others. The laughter here is not innocent: it is compliance, alignment, a small training in cruelty.
What is disturbing is not only the act of mocking, but its function. People laugh to belong, to please, to remain on the side of those who hold more strength, more voice, more power. This is how abuse becomes normalized: not only through those who exercise it openly, but also through those who accompany it, make it acceptable, and turn it into a collective habit.
In this photograph, the real subject is not the single face exposed on the screen, but the mechanism that binds the others together. The pack is often born this way: from a light, almost cheerful consensus that nonetheless prepares the ground for moral violence. Those who learn to mock in order to please also learn to serve. And those who serve abuse, even without directly dirtying their hands, help keep it alive.
Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

Students learn about CIMMYT's maize breeding work with a talk from José Luis Torres, senior researcher with the Global Maize Program, during a visit to the center's maize demonstration plot as part of a university open house for Mexican students. On 27 September 2007, 200 students from eight universities visited CIMMYT's headquarters at El Batán, Mexico, where they toured the biotechnology laboratories, germplasm bank, and maize and wheat fields, while learning about the center’s mission and work. The aim of the event was to raise student interest in agricultural research, and perhaps encourage future collaboration with CIMMYT. This was the first time such an open house was held, and it has now become an annual event, known as "CIMMYT a Puerta Abierta".

Quite stylish this - a small fold out leaflet showing the then 'new' road signs introduced into the UK in the mid-1960s. the new system was introduced on the recommendation of the Worboys Committee into road sign design and also saw the introduction of the new Transport Medium typeface designed by Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir .
Say no to things which are unrealistic.
I have a tendency to over-commit. In the past when clients asked me if I can do something within an unrealistically short period of time, I used to agree to them and as a result also drove myself to death—literally. The stress was so high that I had contemplated killing myself.
The crazy thing was that since I was a perfectionist then, I decided to postpone suicide because I could not see myself having a tomb with something like “SML, the one who did not finish an XYZ project.” I also considered the possibility that no one would show up to my funeral because I somehow messed up their project. Yes I know that this is all very funny but somehow crazies have their crazy ways to cope with life.
These days I just say no. I tell people to go find someone else for things which I think will kill me. Interestingly they usually stay with me because usually when I was given unrealistic requests like that it was because they could not find any humans to do it and I am usually their last hope.
Wishful thinking is a common attribute among humans. Humans are just weird.

Students participate in English Camp at Humphreys

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Participants in the United States Forces Korea Good Neighbor English Camp visited here, May 17. This camp aims to give standout Korean students a better grasp of the English language and American life, while strengthening U.S.-Korea relations.
More than 60 students attended the camp, and while here they played basketball, did pull-ups, received climbing instruction and visited the Humphreys airfield. Attendees reported that the camp was time well spent.
“This was a worthwhile experience,” said Sim, Yun-ji, a student at Gunam Health High School. “This gives us all a chance to strengthen our English skills and have a lot of fun with our fellow students and the Americans.”
While the overall camp lasted only the three days, the benefits will endure, Sim noted.
“I am studying to become a nurse and the camp helped with that goal,” Sim said. “I will not forget the good times and good friends from this camp.”
Yoon, Hyun-gyu, an intern who works in the Humphreys Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security office, helped with the camp. He said the focus was on language and on U.S. culture.
“This is an opportunity for the campers to get a good foundation on American life and the English language. This will help them in the future,” Yoon said.
The campers were housed by U.S. families in the Yongsan Garrison.
“That helps us understand American culture and get some good American food,” said Lee, Jin-hee from Dongil High School.
“Thanks to the English Camp, I understand the language and the culture better than I did before,” added Kim, Min-seung from Daegu Gyeong Sin High School. “I am taking a lot of good information away from this camp. I thank Camp Humphreys and the host families for putting this on.”
