Niki Lauda's Ferrari 312 T

1975 Word Champion

Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari, Modena

This is a vintage drawing I made back in 1976 the infamous and dramatic year when Lauda could win the Championship but had the terrible accident at the German GP in Nurburgring. I like it because it's the essence of Formula 1, just the driver and his car, no background, no sponsors, no logos, no grays, just black and white. on sale here: lorenzo-benetton.pixels.com/featured/niki-lauda-ferrari-3...

First flown with the Boeing test registration N1786B, this aircraft was delivered to the original version of Lauda Air in Jun-01. Lauda Air was merged into Austrian Airlines in Oct-04.

It was fitted with blended winglets in Oct-08 and remained in full Lauda Air livery until it was repainted into Austrian Airlines livery in Jan-10 and was re-named "Hochschwab" in May-10.

After only 11 years in service the aircraft was ferried to Kemble, UK in Jun-12 and permanently retired! Updated 08-Feb-22.

Note: The registration OE-LNO was re-used on a DHL Boeing 757-200F in Feb-22.

Named: "Pablo Picasso".

First flown in Jul-97 with the Boeing test registration N5022E, this aircraft was delivered to Lauda Air as OE-LPA in Sep-97.

Lauda Air became a wholly owned subsidiary of Austrian Airlines in Dec-00 but continued to operate as a separate company until it was fully integrated into Austrian in Sep-05.

In Jul-12 all Austrian Airlines aircraft were transferred to Austrian subsidiary, Tyrolean Airways (see note below) although they continued to operate as Austrian Airlines. Tyrolean was re-integrated into Austrian in Mar-15.

Now 27.5 years old, the aircraft continues in service. Updated 19-Jan-25.

Note: Austrian Airlines had been facing heavy losses and became part of the Lufthansa Group in Sep-09. The Austrian Unions were unhappy and there were numerous strikes by both aircrew and ground staff.

The Lufthansa Group were a bit fed-up with the situation and in Jul-12 they technically closed the company down and transferred all the aircraft to the Austrian Airlines subsidiary Tyrolean Airways (also known as 'Austrian Arrows'). All staff had to re-apply for their jobs at Tyrolean on new salary grades and many flight crew left the company.

Services were still marketed as Austrian Airlines and all aircraft remained in full Austrian Airlines livery with additional small 'Operated by Tyrolean Airways' titles on the forward fuselage. In Mar-15 a new labour agreement was signed with the Unions and Tyrolean Airways was re-integrated into Austrian Airlines.

Lauda Air is part of the Ryanair Group and operates mostly for Ryanair with their FR flight prefix. The exception is when operating between European points and Austria when Lauda's own flight prefix is used.

First flown with the Airbus test registration F-WWDZ, this aircraft was delivered to RBS Aviation Capital and leased to Aeroflot Russian Airlines as VP-BRX in Mar-07.

It was returned to the lessor and leased to GoAir, India as VP-GOT in Jul-17. The aircraft was returned to the lessor in May-19 and leased to Lauda Air as OE-LMC a few days later.

After a bit of a spat with the Vienna Authorities over charges the Ryanair Group closed Lauda's main base and moved everything to Malta. The airline became Lauda Europe and their aircraft were re-registered in Malta. This one became 9M-LMC in Nov-20. Current, updated 21-Jun-25.

The Ferrari 312T was a Ferrari Formula One car design, based on the 312B3 from 1974. In various versions, it was used from 1975 until 1980. It was designed by Mauro Forghieri for the 1975 season and was an uncomplicated and clean design that responded to mechanical upgrades.
