Today's word is borasco. The term is also spelled as borasca or borrasca. It's from Spanish borrasca (squall), from Latin borras (north wind), from Greek borras (boreas), after Boreas, the god of the north wind, in Greek mythology who also gave us boreal and hyperborean. Earliest documented use: 1686.

At the entrance of a Whole Foods store, I noticed an LCD screen advertising “Animal Welfare Certified” steaks.

"Animal Welfare Certified" steaks

The absurdity of words in the ad brought a smile. You’d think anyone who raises a sentient being for the sole purpose of killing her and selling her for parts is probably not out for her welfare. It doesn’t fare well for the cow, no matter how you slice it.

Incongruity in words and action creates violence. Another example is wearing ribbons with the words “Support Our Troops” while dispatching them to die in manufactured wars.

Wow! I must be good with words -- today I have managed to alienate two groups of people in one write-up.

What are your thoughts? Share below or email us at words@wordsmith.org. As always, include your location (city, state).

Meanwhile let’s get back to where we started. This week we’ll feature five words made with animals, but no animals were harmed in the making of these words. Animal Welfare Certified, for real!

Today's word of the day is cynical.

DIACRITICAL MARKS

A frequently asked question from any aspiring speller is ìHow do you know the correct pronunciation of a word?î The Merriam-Webster dictionary has a system of pronunciation symbols (also called diacritical marks or diacritics) that will tell you how to pronounce the word. In any dictionary entry, the pronunciation symbols will be right next the spelling of the word.

(You can find a complete list of all Merriam-Webster pronunciation symbols at unabridged.merriam-webster.com/info/pronsymbols.html ).

Learning all these symbols may be overwhelming for new spellers. In this post, we will break down this list of pronunciation symbols so you will become a master in reading diacritical marks!

Schwa (pronounced /shw‰/): ?

One of the most common diacritics is the schwa, which looks like an upside-down e (?). This is a neutral vowel sound, pronounced like ìuh,î as in banana, circus, and collect. This is often the hardest sound for a speller to figure out because it can be spelled with any vowel: a, e, i, o, u, or even y.

Short Vowel Sounds: a, e, i, o, and u

Whenever there is a plain vowel with no marks on it, it is pronounced with a short sound.

Short vowel sounds:

a- ìaaî sound as in had or cap

e- ìehî sound as in set or head

i- ìihî sound as in mitten or sip

Macron (pronounced /ma-?kr‰n/): a, e, i, o

A macron is a straight line ( - ) that is placed over a vowel. This symbol gives a vowel a long sound.

Long vowel sounds:

a- ìayî sound as in day

e- ìeeî sound as in bead

iñ ìiiî sound as in site

o- ìohî sound as in snow

Diaeresis (also spelled dieresis, pronounced /di'er?s?s/): ‰ and ¸

A diaeresis is two dots (..) that are placed on top of a vowel. A diaeresis is used when the vowel ëaí or ëuí are pronounced like they are ìstretched outî.

‰- ìahî sound as in bother or cot

¸- ìooî sound as in moose or rule or shoe

In German words, these two dots can also be called an umlaut. An umlaut is used when a German vowel is pronounced like a mix of two vowel sounds. One example is the word kummel, which is pronounced /kim?i/. Notice how the letter ëuí in kummel is pronounced like a short ëi,í thatís how an umlaut works.

Stress Symbols: ë and ,

Stress symbols tell you which syllable of the word has the most stress, or emphasis. If a syllable is stressed, that means you put some extra force or pressure as you say that syllable. Stressed syllables are pronounced slightly louder and longer than unstressed syllables.

The diacritical mark (ë) indicates primary stress. This means that you put the most stress, or emphasis, on the syllable that comes right after this mark.

The diacritical mark (,) indicates secondary stress. This means that the syllable after this sound also has some stress, but it is not as much as the primary stress.

Stress on the word can make all the difference in what it means. For example, the word ìpresentî can have two different meanings depending on where you put the stress.

Additional Symbols:

?- ìngî sound as in sing

au?- ìowî sound as in out

o?i- ìoyî sound as in boy

Now letís take a mini-test! Read the pronunciations and try to guess what the word is.

j?'ra|f

d?-'m‰-kr?-se

nash-n?l

By learning how to read pronunciation symbols, you can learn how to correctly pronounce every word in the dictionary, which will help you in spelling bees. With some experience, you will be able to read these pronunciation symbols so quickly that they will become like a second language, and you will be able to practice words faster.

Yesterday we went with some students to the German Currywurst Museum! There, we split into two teams and played a game which consisted of finding the answers to many questions about Currywurst in the museum. Did you know that they also eat Currywurst in many other parts of the world? We also got the chance to smell different spices that you can add on them and play a computer game where you had to make Currywurst as quickly as possible. Ah! And we got to try a little bit of Currywurst too! 😛

Today's word is intransigence, via Spanish/French, from Latin in- (not) + transigere (to settle). Ultimately from the Indo-European root ag- (to drive, draw), which also gave us act, agent, agitate, litigate, synagogue, and ambassador. Earliest documented use: 1882.

Two language learners using TandemTable.

If you are one of those people who are bothered by the use of the word “invite” as a noun, you should listen to this beautiful, heartfelt song (4 min.) from the musical Fiddler on the Roof:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=59Hj7bp38f8

Matchmaker, Matchmaker,

Make me a match,

Find me a find,

catch me a catch

As it happens, things change and the song eventually becomes:

Matchmaker, matchmaker,

plan me no plans.

...

So bring me no ring,

groom me no groom.

Find me no find,

catch me no catch.

One could summarize the whole song as:

X me an X

or

X me no X.

At this point, you might be inclined to say:

Songwriter, songwriter,

noun me no verb

verb me no noun.

There’s a long tradition of this pattern, verbing of nouns and nouning of verbs. Shakespeare in Richard II has the Duke of York say:

Grace me no grace, nor uncle me no uncle.

This week we’ll see some nouns and verbs that started out in one form and evolved into another. It happens all the time. Because language.

What nouns have you verbed? What verbs have you nouned? Post them below or email us at words@wordsmith.org.

Reader, reader, comment me a comment!

Today's word is woodshed, from the practice of using a woodshed for punishing a child, for intensive music practice, etc. From wood, from Old English wudu + shed, a variant of shade, from Old English sceadu. Earliest documented use, noun: 1764, verb: 1893.

Communication. That’s what language is for. But you might have second thoughts after seeing this week’s words. Does anyone even know what a word means, you might say.

That’s because each word featured this week can’t seem to make up its mind. Each word has two meanings that are opposite or contradictory. How’re we going to get anything done?!

Despair not. All is not lost. Language is all about context. Most of the time, context will tell you where a word stands, what it means. Sometimes, it’s the case of British vs American senses. For example, in the UK to table something is to bring it forward for discussion while in the US it’s to put it away or postpone it.

That said, can you construct a sentence for any of the words featured this week that can make the word work in both of its opposite senses?

Share on our website or email us at words@wordsmith.org. As always, include your location (city, state).

Today's word is farouche, from Old French faroche, from forasche, from Latin forasticus (living outside), from foras (outdoors). Earliest documented use: 1765.

The final word in this week's theme "Eponyms" is Oakley, after the sharpshooter Annie Oakley (1860-1926) who was renowned for her skill, from association of the punched ticket with one of her bullet-riddled targets. Earliest documented use: c. 1910.

As it happens, we don’t need to turn a picture of Annie Oakley into a video. A film of hers is available, dating back to 1894, produced by none other than Thomas Edison. It’s grainy and jumpy. If only Edison had had the foresight to realize the historic nature of the film and use the HD mode!

Today's word is compromis.

Today's word is titanic, after Titan, any of a family of giant gods in Greek mythology. The element titanium is named after Titans because of its high strength. Earliest documented use: 1628; for sense 2: 1814.

NOTES: Things didn't end well for Titans. First they overthrew their father and they in turn were overthrown by one of their children. Then there was the Titanic. With such a track record, you'd assume someone would think twice before naming anything, let alone a ship that navigates among icebergs, after them. When did humans ever learn? An Australian billionaire (a titan of the industry?) has announced Titanic II: "The ship will follow the original journey ..." Let's hope, it will not follow the original journey too faithfully. The element titanium is also named after Titans.

Today's word is tawdry. Short for tawdry lace, a contraction of St Audrey lace. The story goes that Æthelthryth (c. 636-679 CE), also known as Etheldreda and Audrey, loved fine silk laces in her youth. She died of a throat tumor which she considered a punishment for her fondness of necklaces. She was a queen, but later became a nun, and eventually a saint. Cheap laces sold in St Audrey's Fair in Ely, England, came to be known as St Audrey lace, and eventually shrank to tawdry lace. Earliest documented use: 1612. Also see: trumpery.

Today's word is cherub, from [From Latin cherubim, from Greek kheroubin, from Hebrew kerubim. Ultimately from the Semitic root krb (to praise). Earliest documented use: 825.]

NOTES: Cherubim are the second highest order of angels. Do you know your angelology? I know what you are thinking, what's angelology? They don't teach important stuff in schools these days. We are always ready to give you practical knowledge to succeed in the modern world. Angelology is the branch of theology concerning the study of angels. Angels have their own celestial hierarchy (and you thought they were above this) with nine levels that go, from lowest to highest:

angels

archangels

principalities

powers

virtues

dominions

thrones

cherubim

seraphim

Best to memorize the order -- never know where it might come in handy.

Also, if you are in the market for a guardian angel, well, why go for the lowest order? We suggest getting a guardian seraph instead.

Around here we do not consume food with animal ingredients -- a plant-based diet works just fine.* We make an exception for words, however. This week we’ll feature five such words -- words made with animal parts. Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes not, and you’ll have to read the label for a word’s list of ingredients, also known as the etymology.

We’ll go from head to tail, or at least from beak to tail.

*If you are curious why, check out the documentary Dominion.

Today's word is rostrum. In ancient Rome, a speaking platform was decorated with the beaks of captured ships. Hence the use of the term for a speaking platform. From Latin rostrum (snout, bill, beak), from rodere (to gnaw). Earliest documented use: 1542.

The final word in this weeks' theme "High-scoring words in Scrabble" is whizbang. The term has its origin in the onomatopoeic representation of the sound made by a firearm or firework. It was popularized in WWI as high-speed shells were called whizbangs. It was also the name given to a rocket launcher used by the US Army during WWII. Of imitative origin. Earliest documented use: 1881.
