Today's word is rat race, from rat, from Old English raet (rat) + race, from Old Norse ras (race). Earliest documented use: 1937.

The term started out as a literal racing of rats (earliest use 1783). Then it was used as military slang (1931) to refer to planes or ships chasing each other or racing. Eventually the term evolved into its current sense. Imagine a rat running through a laboratory maze to find another piece of cheese or an employee hoping to climb the next rung of the corporate ladder while sacrificing personal health and peace and you’d have a good idea of the term rat race. In French, a popular expression métro, boulot, dodo (commute, work, sleep) refers to the daily grind. Also see, sisyphean.

I’m a minimalist, but I do make certain exceptions.

One can never have too much chocolate in their pantry, too big a battery in their cellphone, or too many words on their wordshelves.

Words don’t take much room. They don’t need feeding, vacuuming, washing, or tuning. No need to buy insurance or locks.

How many words does one really need in life? The more the merrier. You don’t have to use them all at the same time, but you never know which word might come handy when.

Here are five I have picked this week. Dusted them off (metaphorically speaking), as they have been unused for a while. Take a look. Do with them what you will. And add them to your own wordshelves.

These are words that might make you say: I didn’t know there was a word for it!

Today's word is cacoethes. The Roman satirist Juvenal once wrote about insanabile scribendi cacoethes (incurable passion for writing), which inspired the sense of the word today.

The final word in this week's theme "Shirts" is shirttail, from shirt, from Old English scyrte (shirt) + tail, from Old English toegl (tail). Earliest documented use: 1659. Also see coattail.

Today's word is pinnacle, from Old French, from Latin pinnaculum, diminutive of pinna (wing, feather). Ultimately from the Indo-European root pet- (to rush or fly), which also gave us feather, petition, compete, perpetual, pterodactyl, helicopter, appetence, asymptomatic, auricle, empennage, impetuous, pencel, peripeteia, petulant, propitious, pinnate, and lepidopterology (study of butterflies and moths). Earliest documented use: 1330.

Today's word is gunwale, from gun + wale (a plank along the side of a ship), from its use as a support for guns in earlier times. Earliest documented use: 1466.

NOTES: The word is often used in the idiom "to the gunwales" meaning to be full, almost overflowing.

Learn more at: wordsmith.org/words/gunwale.html

Today's word is canary, from French canari (canary), from Spanish canario (canary; of the Canary Islands), from Latin canis (dog). Ultimately from the Indo-European root kwon- (dog), which also gave us canine, chenille (from French chenille: caterpillar, literally, little dog), kennel, canary, hound, dachshund, corgi, cynic, cynosure, canaille, canicular, and cynophobia. Earliest documented use: 1568.

The Canary Islands, a group of islands off the coast of Africa, are named after an animal, but it’s not canaries. It’s dogs. The island’s name is, literally, the Island of the Dogs, from Latin Canariae Insulae, supposedly named after large dogs found there. The canary birds are native to the area and are named after the islands. The yellow sense is after the birds, the singer sense is named after their singing, and finally, the informer sense developed because an informer sings or squeals.

The canary has also given us the idiom “canary in the coal mine” to refer to something that gives an early warning of a danger or failure. Due to their small size, canaries are more susceptible to carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases and were carried by coal miners in the mine shafts.

Fairy tales and folktales, we grew up listening to them. They were mere amusements, or not. Latest research has quantified the benefits of listening to stories.

Stories we grow up hearing take root in our collective consciousness. Many of the characters, places, concepts, and utterances have become part of the language. This week we’ll look at five of them.

Today's word is breadcrumb, from bread, from Old English bread + crumb, from Old English cruma. Earliest documented use: 1519.

NOTES:

In the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, their parents drop the two siblings off in the forest because they are not able to feed them (if only there was a strong social safety net). The smart kids drop breadcrumbs along the way so they can trace their steps back and find their way home.

In computing, website design, etc., breadcrumbs help users as a navigation aid and tell them where they are in a program, website, etc.

Today's word is woolgathering, from wool, from Old English wull + gathering, from Old English gaderian. Earliest documented use: 1553.

Today's word is aquabib, after Latin aqua (water) + bibere (to drink). Ultimately from the Indo-European root poi- (to drink), which also gave us potion, poison, potable, beverage, bibulous, bibacious, and Sanskrit paatram (pot). Earliest documented use: 1731.

At first glance this week's words may appear to be misspelled. Some words might make you wonder: Is a letter missing? Others: Is there an extra letter here?

The answer in each case is: None of the above.

Each word we feature this week has exactly as many letters as it needs. Nothing to add. Nothing to remove.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said, "A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

Going by that definition, these words are perfect, even though there was no designer who made them. Sometimes there's no need for a designer (intelligent or not).

Can we call a word a "little print"? If so, these little prints are perfect as they are. Tame them and add them to your wordstock. You become responsible, however, for what you have tamed. Use them judiciously.

This week we'll feature five words that appear to be misspelled.

Today's word is staddle.

Learn more at: wordsmith.org/words/staddle.html

Today's word is anergy, from an- (not) + ergon (work). Earliest documented use: 1890. The opposite of sense 1 is energy and the opposite of sense 2, allergy. Earliest documented use: 1890.

Learn more at: wordsmith.org/words/anergy.html

Today's word is lame duck.

ETYMOLOGY:

The term originated in the London Stock Exchange where a stockbroker who lost a lot of money and defaulted on his debts was called a lame duck. Other animal metaphors used in the financial world are bull and bear. Earliest documented use: 1761. The term came to be applied to politics about 100 years later.

NOTES:

When employees are fired, they are typically escorted out soon after. This is also how it’s done after elections in most places. As soon as the victor is confirmed, the old prime minister is out and the new one takes over.

In some places, such as the US, there’s usually a transition period. For example, elections are held in the first week of Nov and the new president doesn’t take over until the next Jan 20. The outgoing president is a lame duck during these 2.5 months. The system was designed with smooth transition in mind and it works, assuming people follow the norms. As we saw on Jan 6, 2021, sometimes even a lame duck has enough time to cause chaos. Going forward, maybe it’d be better to have security escort the loser outside the White House gates as soon as fired by the people.

Today's #WordOfTheDay is Baedeker, after the German publisher Karl Baedeker (1801-1859) who founded a company that published travel guidebooks. Earliest documented use: 1863.

If you are one of those people for whom a contraction, such as za for pizza or k for OK, looks like a major faux pas, take a deep breath and visualize the sound of ocean waves and birds chirping.

Abbreviations and contractions have been a part of language, any language, since, well, forever. It’s just that some of these shortenings have been with us for so long that we don’t realize that what we are using is a condensed version of something bigger. This week we’ll see five such words.

What contractions and abbreviations do you use that are not a part of the language yet? Some of these may be just in your family, in your field, in a recreational activity, for example. Share them below or email us at words@wordsmith.org (include your location: city, state).

Today's word is bolshie (also spelled bolshy), an abbreviation of Bolshevik (a person with radical views), from Russian Bolshevik, from bolshe (greater), referring to the faction of the Russian Social Democratic party that seized power in the October Revolution of 1917. Ultimately from the Indo-European root bel- (strong), which also gave us debility and Bolshoi Theatre (literally, Great Theater). Earliest documented use: 1918.
