Language education policy was the focus of the first in a new seminar series hosted in China by UW–Madison’s Wisconsin China Initiative. The conference open Wednesday, March 27, with a reception at the UW–Madison Shanghai Innovation Office. The Shanghai Seminar Series was developed in conjunction with the opening of the Shanghai Innovation Office as an opportunity for UW–Madison faculty to host seminars in Shanghai for colleagues from across China, as well as from Greater China, Japan, Korea, and beyond. The first conference was led by François Victor Tochon and Catherine Compton-Lilly, professors in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Aydin Bal, professor in the Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education.
UW-Madison’s Language Institute hosted World Languages Day on November 14, 2013 at Union South. This exciting, college-for-a-day experience introduces more than 600 Wisconsin high school students and their teachers to many of the world languages and cultural topics offered at UW-Madison. The event, which features faculty, students and staff, aims to inspire students to pursue a second or third language regardless of their educational and career goals.

Students from programs offered at USG and staff from the Priddy Library made "Multilingual Story Time" at the Gaithersburg Book Festival a success! The event was organized by the director of the Priddy Library, Irene Munster.
Student volunteers read stories printed in Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Hindi, Farsi and Korean to young children and their families at the festival.
Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.
Urmiye (Türkçesi:اورمو, Urmu, اورمیه, Urumiyə;Farsça: ارومیه, Orumieh), İran'ın Batı Azerbaycan Eyaleti'nin yönetim merkezi olan şehir. Şehir, bağlı olduğu eyaletin orta kısmında, Urmiye Gölü ile Türkiye sınırı arasında, kendi adıyla anılan ovada kuruludur. Nüfusu 2006 yılı verileriyle 577,307 kişidir ki Urmiye ülkenin en büyük 10. şehridir.
Urmiye şehrinde nüfusun çoğunluğunu (tahmini 90%) Türklerdir, azınlık kısmınıysa Kürtler, Süryaniler ve Ermeniler oluşturuyor.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams today issued a directive to city agencies to evaluate how they can further incorporate language technologies into their day-to-day interactions with the public to improve communications with all New Yorkers, including non-English speaking communities. To start, the city is planning to install language apps on all city-owned smart devices — more than 100,000 in total — to make city services more accessible to New Yorkers as part of the City of New York’s push to become the most language-friendly city on the globe on Monday, December 8, 2025. Arabic language celebrated today as a symbol of unity and diversity
Baghdad, 18 December 2015 – Arabic, the language of religion, science and literature, was celebrated at an event organized in observation of World Arabic Language Day in the prestigious Sami Abdel Hameed Theatre located in the heart of the Al Mutanabi Street in Baghdad today, in the presence of artists, intellectuals, linguists and representatives of many national and international institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and UNESCO.
The event comes a week after Baghdad was designated as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of literature. Baghdad’s designation to the list recognizes the importance of the past and present intellectual and literary life of the city.
“Among all the contributions that Arab people gave to the universal human civilization, the Arabic language reigns supreme,” said Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Gyorgy Busztin. “Arabic is one of the major languages not only on account of the Holy Qur’an, but also on account of the role it played in building and sustaining human civilization. Much of the heritage of antiquity survived thanks to medieval Arab scholars. Their contributions in various fields form the basis of modern science, and all that came to us in the Arabic language. Arabic therefore deserves to be celebrated as a language that contributed greatly to shaping our world”, added DSRSG Busztin.
Axel Plathe, Director of UNESCO Office for Iraq described the Arabic language as a “symbol of unity in diversity as it enables millions of men and women to make their voices heard and build cultural ties beyond physical borders”. He added: “Today, we pay tribute to Arabic and the great role that it has played over hundreds of years in the flow of knowledge on so many subjects ranging from philosophy to literature, from medicine to psychology, from astronomy to mathematics.”
This year, World Arabic Language Day is dedicated to science and scientific communication. The celebration aimed at highlighting the historical role of the Arabic language in research and the dissemination of knowledge, and the importance of multilingualism for the research community today.
The celebration, also attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture included panel discussions on the intersections of the Arabic language with the sciences, poetry, calligraphy and other topics.
Al Mutanabi Street, Iraq’s literary district, is where language and literary meet and where a cultural community has flourished for years. The unique street plays a crucial role in the cultural life and the constant revival of Arabic language and literature. Dating back to the 8th century, Al Mutanabi Street was a refuge for writers and authors of all religious and ethnic backgrounds. The street was a symbol of diversity and unity, emblematic of the day’s celebration
World Arabic Language Day was established by a decision of UNESCO’s Executive Board in 2012. The initiative, proposed by Morocco and Saudi Arabia, seeks to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, as well as celebrate Arabic language’s role in and contribution to the safeguarding and dissemination of human civilization and culture.
